We're talking about music here.

So am I. Your point?

...you realise we're not hating on Opeth because they're mainstream, right? Amon Amarth are "mainstream", and I absolutely love them. Same as Epica, etc.

For one, them being from Sweden makes no difference. Haven't you noticed the theme of this thread? Folk/viking/winter/bleak themed metal is the general thing. No one's posted ABBA...

You cannot, however, deny that Opeth ARE overrated and arrogant.

Amon Amarth = screaming to maybe three chords and a double bass. Not melodic in any way. But you dub them "viking themed metal" because they have beards and name their songs "Pursuit of Vikings" What a [censored]ing joke.

Yet, it doesn't matter that Opeth is from Sweden? They even have a song called http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8atiEPs0bQ. They are more "folk" and "viking" and "winter" than anything from Amon Amarth. You call them arrogant and while that may be true, they actually have a reason to be. They are evidently a more talented and versatile band. I could care less if they are arrogant or not, as long as they continue making good music.

1. Metal in general would not mix well with the Elder Scrolls.
2. Bathory svcks.

No, Opeth are a stupidly hyped up band who really don't live up to this "Gods of everything" thing they seem to portray themselves as.
In Mourning > Opeth.

Many of the bands mentioned in this thread are what I'd go for.

Immortal, Emperor, Ensiferum, Bathory, Wintersun, Amon Amarth, Wulfgar, Equilibrium, Rhapsody Of Fire, Epica. There's so much good metal that goes so well with this sort of
stuff.

Thank for introducin me to In mourning, just listened to a couple tracks, [censored]in loving dude, but you can't sell Opeth short they are still a great band and Mikael is very talented, do prefer their older stuff though.

Ya Nightbeat, you obviously no nothing of the metal genre, were just regular people just like anyone else, and a study has actually Been done that showed kids in college who listened to metal tended to get better grades and be mire well adjusted than people who don't. If you ever went to a metal show you would see that most are incredibly nice people who will even pick ya up when your down. Takes a lot more talent to write and play metal than any [censored] you here in the radio that's for sure, most genres besides rock don't even write there own music.

Sorry for he rant, wrote it before I saw your apology :P

Blackwater Park. Bleak is my favorite Opeth song.

I have listened to a lot of death metal, thrash metal, etc. and I just can't see anything unique about Amon Amarth personally. I saw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5-w1xWsVFs live back in '03 and I still think they sound better. Napalm Death, too. Amon Amarth to me seem more about a particular image, but that's just my opinion.

Amon Amarth have plenty of rythm, and play very well the style if music they play, and image definitely has a lot to do with ith, but that's just because that's what they are into, if I was in a band it would all be Vikingr themed as well with plenty of the imagery to go with it :P I would do a mix ifnstyles though something like a cross between, Amon Amarth with some more folky elements from say the Heidvolke I posted and the wardruna someone else listed with a little prog thrown in:p

Gap Var Ginnunga by Wardruna. Their only album - so far. Thanks for the recommendation Gloomweaver.

So Howard Shore is doing the soundtrack. That's good. Now I feel silly, thought it was going to be Jeremy Soule again.

It's Jeremy Soule. Just so nobody gets the wrong idea.

Almost (if not) all of Amon Amarth's songs are about Norse mythology and war. They are "Viking themed" but not traditional "viking" music. "Screaming to three chords and double bass" just completely shows your ignorance. They might not be the most talented or amazing musicians, but the music they write and the fashion in which they present it fits exactly what they are singing about I think. Their guitar melodies are what make them melodic, and nothing else, I understand that, but that is the nature of "melodic death metal", the genre in which they call themselves.

BTW I'm not trying to down talk Opeth at all, I just didn't think they had anything viking themed, and being from Sweden doesn't automatically make them a viking themed band. Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Dismember, Dark Tranquility, all metal bands from Sweden that aren't anything close to being "viking" themed.

best celtic metal band EVER!!!

I remember the days I didn't know about Eluveitie. Those days svcked.
I try to play some of their songs on tin whistle, but I only got Samon down so far..
I think people might get annoyed if I linked to all of my favourite songs, but if you find the time, give a listen to Tegernako, Your Gaulish War, Calling The Rain and Gray Sublime Archon.

Holy crap, I'm impressed someone knows of Menhir.

I love that album through and through. I can't wait for the day they decide to make another one, my excitement will come close to Skyrim's announcement.

Something everyone can enjoy, even people who don't like metal. I am not ashamed to say this is probably my favorite song of all times:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEVJFSUjvNo

And a reminder of good old In-Extremo-times when they still made interesting music:

Last time I checked this was a Skyrim forum not a metal forum. This thread doesn't really fit here since it's pretty much just a collection of songs that are irrelevant to the game (as in metal will never be part of TES in any way at all) or people bashing others for (dis)liking metal. But hey, I'm not a moderator so what can I do about it.

Anyways, I'm happy metal never will be a part of this series. Nothing against the style and I listen to it occasionally but it doesn't fit at all.

When the game comes out, I'm sure there will be an easy way to mod the soundtrack to play whatever you want. Regardless, I agree with KorVegor that this thread is nothing but a metalhead circle jerk, and the game developers would probably throw up a little bit in their mouths at the thought of shoe-horning metal into their RPG.

This coming from a listener of Burzum, Summoning, and Graveland.

That's their only album so far, I'm not sure if they plan on making a second one or not. They just keep playing this one at norse festivals and such. You're right, there probably won't be anything like this in the game, and Howard Shore's music is GREAT, but at certain times I'll probably be throwing these guys on instead. It's just too good to pass up.

I would prefer if they only release an album when they make some really good material worth releasing instead of just going mainstream and release albums on regular basis with pretty crappy material.

1. Metal in general would not mix well with the Elder Scrolls.
2. Bathory svcks.

On another note, is anyone else hoping for more songs with lyrics in the soundtrack?
I hope they didn't use the choir just for the theme. I'd really like to meet some bards here and there, singing their tales in Dragonspeak. Something simple, like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBvHov4_zQw would add a lot to the atmosphere.

What about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzjW--KUH1g (It's still melodic death metal though, so most of you won't like the vocals)
Or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXjF9po2hYk&feature=related :D (A bit softer)

My 2 favourite bands.

P.S. I like the song but it would feel out of place in Skyrim
