Battle for Solitude

I cant complete the Battle for Solitude quest and Im not sure if its a bug and am not sure where to post because I cant see a 'bug' section. Everything seems fine killing imperials until we reach the castle with the imperial general and redguard, there is a conversation between them, Ulfric and Galmar, the general just sits there with a white quest arrow above his head. Then the redguard attacks me and I defeat her and the general but they wont die, Ulfric and Galmar just stand there while the general guy crawls about and the redguard quickly regenerates then just stands there. I can talk to them all including the imperial general if I heal him. So Im locked in the room with four people I cant kill and no way out. I've went back to several save points, played right through, to the same conclusion, and not sure what to do now. When I complete the mission before it, Liberate Haafingar, and go back to Galmar he doesn't acknowledge I've completed the quest and before I've talked to him, I just walk up to him and he says we're attacking Solitude so I join up with Ulfric. Galmar will only tell me to join up with Ulfric and thats it. I've went back pretty far through my saves and nothing I do is fixing it. When we get to the castle again (and again) if I speak to Galmar he gives me 1000c for the last quest (I think) and I'm still stuck. There is no opportunity I've found so far to talk to Galmar before we reach this room in the castle.

Skrims been OK up to now, yesterday I saw my first backward flying dragon, and I've always had CTDs every now and then; normally before a ctd I'll see some armor displayed as plain blue or faces just green and thats been the worst of it. I'll keep trying but if anyone has had similar happen or advice to fix it I'd really like to hear it.

Ok svcks, but you're not missing much...

*SPOILERS*

you can either kill or show mercy to the general.. after which Ulfric will give a braveheart style motivational speech to the remaining rebels in the courtyard. Um.. and thats pretty much the end of the stormcloakes questline.

Nothing really changes in the world... empire camps are still set up around the mountains, rebels still talk about hating the empire etc.
