Any race can be a good mage but some races are always superior to others. In Morrowind and Oblivion bretons and altmer were far better at it than the other races by a mile.

Khajiit, not a true mage but can make an awesome dual class one.

Breton. Because I prefer NOT getting one-shotted by other mages.

Breton. When you weigh the benefits of having more magicka and having more defense, Bretons are simply superior.

In other words, having the extra 100 (or whatever it is) more magicka is not even close to being worth it, considering you lose 75 resistance (remember, you're comparing to the Breton, not baseline).

Bretons are better but that′s just because they are overpowered in every way, if this was a game where people cared about balance no one would ever play any other race than the overpowered 50% resistance to everything + 50% shield breton race. But I voted for Altmers because they should actually be the best mages, especially considering all the minuses they get.

All the altmer get is a little bit of magicka more then bretons but at one hell of a cost.. Not worth it at all. I tend to play both as mages but bretons simply are alot better at it.

Breton with Apprentice is much better than an Altmer. The Breton resistance decreases the apprentice to 50 weakness to magic. As for Altmers not only is it less magicka if not using The Apprentice, but the cost is much bigger. As if using Altmer with Apprentice you're F'ed if you get shot by lighting or a ghost. So yeah.
Breton.

Bingo.

Between the race of arrogant bastard high elves, and the race that was voiced by a guy that when he did the pirate captain in the first DB contract, I lol'd harder than the first time I saw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boh92DrYEWs. I'd rather have to work against the weaknesses in magic and be one of the few Khajiit that become a mage, after all, in Oblivion I was one of the only TWO Khajiit guild mages in Cyrodiil, and it made me feel special.

(BTW, even though stealth with bows, blades and poisons are my Norm de Guerre, occasionally I like playing a mage.)

Edited for clarity.

Altmer. The Mer of the Summerset Isles have long held a racially inherent dominant grasp on arcane understanding surpassing that of any other Tamrielic race.
Bretons' affinity for the magical arts is derived from their half-mer ancestry :P They make good monks I suppose, but otherwise... :teehee:

Edit: for clarification, I'm looking at this on a lore perspective and not on racial bonuses ingame :ninja:

Ayleid. None of the other races can hold a candle to the magical prowess of the Ayleids.

I'm surprised everyone is saying Bretons.

If you do the math with the character creation in OB you will see that Altmer always end up with 50 points more starting magicka AND more health compared to Bretons.

Bretons are better for mixed combat/magic while Altmer are the best for a pure mage. The bigger question in my mind is whether to pick the Mage or the Atronach birthsign...

I tried a Breton, but it was like playing with training wheels. No risk!

Its fairly simple.. the 50 extra magicka doesnt make up for the massive change from 50 resist to all magic to 25% weakness to all elemental magic. Also the hps were never realy important because all the races reached 100 endurance easy...

Hopefully they remade the altmer this time to be better mages.
