Battle of the magic schools!

However it still doesn't change that Alchemy is being classed under a thief based skill tree. And there is not any precedent for that. My problem is how are BSG going to retcon the existing wording of what alchemy is, and what it is related to, and shoehorn that to stealth category of skills.

The types of characters that use alchemy the most are rangers, assassins, scouts, etc. Now that they don't have to worry about neatly working skills into the three categories to perfectly fit into the attributes, they can return to the more mixed approach of Morrowind, like how Security was Intelligence based but a Stealth skill, or how Unarmored was Speed but a Magic skill. They may switch Security back to Intelligence and leave Alchemy as Intelligence, but in moving it under Stealth, there will be two of those skills governed by Intelligence. Sorry if that's a bit convoluted, but I think it makes sense.

And poison is a thief based magickial effect, What makes poison thief specifc? Any references or lore that links poison to Thief skills?

How can Mages not make and use poison? In the school of destruction there is a weakness to poison effect. In Restoration there is a cure poison effect.

Replace the word "Thief" with "Stealth" or "Rogue" and it will make more sense.

Still waiting for the in game references or Lore to link it to stealth.

This is moot anyway. Poison is not the entirety of Alchemy.

According to oblivion, As for what prefab classes that use alchemy, it's mainly magic specialization based 5 to 2. Battlemage, Healer, Mage, Sorcerer, and Witchhunter. in the stealth specialisation you have Bard and Assassin. Oddly rogue and Scout are combat specialists apparently. But I'll let you have those 2 anyway. Even so, Magic beats that as the majority for Alchemy using classes.

I understand where you are coming from. I'm looking at this from more of a logic stand point and not lore. To me, it doesn't make sense for a battlemage to have alchemy. The prefab classes tend to be horrible, throwing in skills that fit into the specializations but may not have any practical use for the class (like having hand to hand, blunt, and blade in one class). I think it comes down to a matter of practicality as potions are essentially spells in a bottle. It is not very useful for a pure Mage, as they wouldn't need any potion effects, nor would they have a weapon to use poison on. The effects of potions and poisons are more useful for a character outside the Magic spec or a mix between Magic and something else.

The buffs potions can do, make mages effective combat fighters. Just buff blade skill with a spell and down a few potions, poison up your blade, and you should be able to go toe to toe if need be. The battlemage is good example of that imo.

I definitely wouldn't say alchemy is least useful to mage types. They probably rely on it as much as an character type.

I am more of a fighter, so my favourite is destruction.

Destruction was always my favorite.

Let's hope equipping fire in both hands leads to some explosive results.

I just realized this poll doesn't have enchanting...:o

Might just be an application to all magical schools though with this skill and put into weapon and armour form.

Mystisicm. For me there was always six schools of magic (thaumaturgy made illusion useless, so that one actually made sense) and other spells should be moved *into* it, and mysticism being the "elementary school of magic" (imo). And enchanting should be put into it as perks, since dealing with souls and using them is pretty close to dealing with the fabric of magic in my book. But I guess that depends on how enchanting and magic has changed otherwise. I may change my mind when I actually see everything work together.

But typically as a non magic user, I value alteration pretty high for its utility spells.
