Battlemage already fixed by mods?

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2015 10:17 am

I always loved the magic gameplay in Oblivion, and played as Battlemage casting with shield and sword. And absolutely hated how awkwardly they did it in Skyrim not able to wield shield and sword with magic and instantly cast. I know Smart Casting fixed the both the equipping and charging problem, but it wasn't just as immersive, magic bolts just shooting from your torso.

Is there already animation mods that fix the last problem to play Battlemage like in Oblivion?

I'm sorry but it's Oblivion that got it wrong. Skyrim got back to how magic was cast in Morrowind and they were right. Nevertheless, there must be mods out there that make what you want. :)

What do you mean, Morrowind has exactly same kind of casting as Oblivion, instant and you could cast with shield and sword?

Morrowind is that way with the Code Patch, at least if you choose that change, but vanilla Morrowind required that you switch specifically to magic in order to cast any spells, since both hands are involved in the casting animation. Skyirm did almost the same thing, only it allows using a sword and spell combination.

Yeah it was fixed with MCP, and that's how everyone uses it playing battlemage. Time to fix it in Skyrim completely.

There is nothing to fix here; it's a matter of preference.

Okay. Does it really seem logicall to you that someone can cast a spell with their hands although the said hands are encumbered with shield and sword, or greatsword or bow? It doesn't seem so to me, and I'm not a masochist. You think like an mmo player. :P

Well I must say I found nothing wrong with the way it was in Morrowind, but after having played Oblivion for the last one and a half years I don't know if I could get back to it that easily. It's just too convenient. ;)

But in Skyrim they have changed it to a system where you can equip spells just the same as weapons for each hand separately, which was not possible in Morrowind. So you might not be able to carry a weapon and a shield and cast a spell, but you can have a weapon equipped in the one hand and a spell in other, so it's still different from both Morrowind and Oblivion. In Morrowind it was always only Weapon/Shield or Magic, in Oblivion you can have all at once and in Skyrim mix Shield/Weapon/Spells for both hands individually. Though I admit I still would prefer to be able to cast spells while using a two-handed weapon.

Basically, spells work like items in Skyrim, so I could imagine that swift casting like in Oblivion could maybe only be realized with some kind of autocast hotkey (like Enhanced Hotkeys in Oblivion), but it should automatically equip whatever shield or weapon was used before after the "cast" button is released. Don't know if such a mod exists or is even possible.

I think they changed it for Skyrim because they wanted to make classes more distinct, and not always for the magic + something else character. But doing so they practically destroyed the battle mage class. They forced something on, rather than have players choose something themselves.

Looks like http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/43123/? could have what you want - with it you can set spells to autocast in certain situations or create "spell rings" which allow for quick spellcasting, though they have to be configured individually. Still, it might be what you are looking for. Though there appears to be an issue with continuous spells.
