Battles in Skyrim

Post » Fri Sep 09, 2011 9:54 am

I've only seen one other topic about bigger battles, but it was mostly people talking about how they didn't like them in OB. What i want to know is, is there going to be bigger battles than OB in Skyrim? I know obviously you can't pit thousands of people against each other, but a little more than 5v5 or 8v8, the best battle i remember in OB was the Shivering Isles expansion, were the Golden Saints and the Dark Seducers fought at Cylarne for the right to relight New Sheoth, that was a cool battle cause you could influence were you attacked from. Also when Jyggalag came and you had to protect the Fringe and you got to put soldiers around and defend certain areas.

Also in KOTN the battle was fun, but it wasn't that great, more of just your nine guys attacking like 3 Aurorans at a time and just mass slaughter no actual fun.

What i want to know is if anyone has a topic or something about battles in Skyrim that involve more than just like 3 or 4 people, cause if the king is dead and if there is civil war then i would think that there would be small skirmishes of warring factions, and hopefully it would be better fighting than OB.

If anyone has a link to a topic or video or anything that says it could you post it please?

Not sure on source, but I believe it was said that more NPCs can be on-screen at once with the new engine. Obviously making larger battles possible.

Yeah, that's why they merged Cuirass's and Greaves, so they can fit more NPC's on screen at once. I hope there's some big'ish battles in it, like 8v8/10v10. Would be awesome.

Big battles will only be cool if the auto-target thing they mentioned is any good. I recall comments about how swings will be "magnetically" drawn to enemies, so accuracy isn't a HUGE part of combat.

This is important because in Oblivion NPC's and enemies were in a chaotic mosh pit that I couldn't participate in without KO'ing an ally or getting a bounty on my head. It was way too chaotic beyond four or five participants.

I hope there are are lot of big battles too, so that merging the armor is worth it (bad solution imo). I really don't want to lose the ability to customize my armor appearance (or as some call it, mix-and-match) for the sake of 1 or 2 large scale battles; that would be extremely disappointing.

i always had the same problem like when you fought to save Kavatch and the imperial guards come to "help" you then suddenly my good player is a murderer with a 2000 gold bounty on my head

Yup i know what you mean, same with a lot of battles in Oblivion, the fact that you could yield was cool, but not always could you, and sometimes you killed someone important.

But if the new combat system can be more like when a lot of NPC's fight, they don't all just go for one person, that say it was 8v8 and they all came together at the same time that one NPC would fight one other NPC, and be a little more realistic, or if some type of battle formation could be used, that would be pretty cool.

Bethesda IMO failed at making battles feel epic, ESPECIALLY the final one. Total disappointment. It was either the effort put into it, the technology of the time, or it's just me.

I think Skyrim will make improvements on this.

To be fair, that moshpit feel in combat is actually pretty realistic, since a melee often turns into a tangle of bodies. It just didn't make for fun gameplay.

I'm pretty sure they wanted to have more NPC's onscreen at once solely to better populate the cities. With the type of AI they're talking about, I seriously doubt we're going to see any battles larger than 10 fighting at once. It's a bleak outlook, for sure. I hope I'm wrong, but that is my best guess as to how this is going to work out.

Why would single pieces of armor assist in more easily rendering more NPCs in a city cell? I don't know much about these things, so it's just getting more confusing. I was under the impression it was for battles.
