Battlespire is Insane

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:54 pm

I just got my package from Amazon, since I had been trying this game for awhile. And boy... A "legend" really. The best and toughest combat ever, and since I'm not reading the walkthrough, the most breaking puzzles too.

It's a pity so much that was an integral part of both it and Daggerfall was dumped later; if only Bethesda had improved upon the superb existing roots, we would be much better now.

My most intense combat so far has been duelling with Dremoras on level 1 - even DF rather pales in comparison. Enemies are much tougher, faster and smarter, and the conversations are superb.

It's a small thing, but BS also has the best jumping mechanic ever, because you can actually see where you're going to jump to.

The atmospear of that game is amazing I truely enjoyed it almost as much as i did morrowind. My faviote part is being able to make smart remarks to the deadra.

Man, if you thought Daggerfall was hard... You never heard of Battlespire!

I'm in level 2 and the spider daedra are whacking me - repeatedly. It's impressive how easy is to suddenly die to anything.

The combat is truly actioney, but in the good sense. Compared with DF, it's more vibrant and complex, which forces you to think and to act all the while dodging several fireballs from a Dremora or the just plain obscenely fast way that every critter tends to attack. The odds, the complexity, all that turns it into sheer emotion as you instinctively slash, backpedal quickly while trying to avoid obstacles from behind you and just plainly cry when a Spider Daedra svcks half your health in a single hit; this makes the effort to dodge them even more of a desperation. AND to complement it, the way your character and enemies shout when they are hit is truly atmospheric - as if it wasn't despairing enough to get whacked by a Dremora, you'll have to endure the agony of hearing your character scream with it.

MW also had pain screams, but these were far more sparse and incidental, and quite too theatrical for my taste. Especially the High Elf scream was very annoying and flowery; in Battlespire, however, you feel like you're truly in pain. It has been quite long since I played OB so I don't remember enough to judge it.

Without any doubt, I would place Battlespire as offering bar none the *best* combat experience in the whole series.

Daggerfall has a ton of unused pain/death sounds, both male and female. Makes me wonder why they weren't used for enemy humanoids or even the player character.

As far as I can tell Daggerfall must also have a ton of unused treasure items. Many of the piles and even the items I find in DaggerXL look like nothing I've seen. It will be interesting to see what I get when Lucius puts in the messages and info boxes.

Oh, if I had some cash to throw at a copy of Battlespire. Looks interesting.

It's only $15-30 on Amazon licensed retailers plus delivery fees. Surprisingly cheap if you ask me; Ebay is an alternative source but I think it was far more expensive there.

And yeah, I do hope that DaggerXL will finally bring the game to its full unrealized potential ;).

Well, dunno since, well, I already said it has been quite some time since I tried it... But I find it better than anything else prior to it. If you play Oblivion regularly, and manage to grab a copy of Battlespire and/or watch YouTube videos, you can take your own conclusions.

etc...

I confess it was this "Let's Play" series that motivated me towards the game. I was indifferent prior.

Yeah, I know it's cheap. Right now I lack the money to buy a bottle of coke. :/ Being a student svcks sometimes. I miss working. At least then I had money for rare games.

Wait until you can manipulate daedric politics to get what you want, I thought that was one of the coolest aspects.

Has anyone noticed that:

Spoiler

The voice of that Battlemage Clarentavious on level 1 is very similar to the voice of Socuccius Ergala, the Breton guy in MW who appears when you create your character?

Spoiler

Furthermore, have you noticed that both Ergalla and Clarentavious (as far as sprites go) look a lot like former gamesas dev. Ken Rolston, who worked on both MW and Battlespire?

Does anyone know if Battlespire works on Windows 7? I'd like to know before I consider buying a copy.

Get Dosbox. Battlespire will positively not work alone in any modern system.

By the way, this topic was resurrected by a bot just as I came back to these fora. I guess it's a karmic way of welcoming me.
