Battlespire Retrospective

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:00 am

I haven't noticed another post about this, so in case anyone is interested there's a pretty thorough http://www.rpgwatch.com/show/article?articleid=124&ref=0&id=395 up over at RPG Watch. I'm glad to see someone giving the game attention--it seems like outside these forums Battlespire and Redguard are mostly forgotten. The article brings to life a lot of aspects of Battlespire I'd forgotten about--the character creation, dialogue choices, etc. Almost makes me want to give the game another shot.

Indeed. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a copy of that one.

Quite an interesting one.

Actually, I'm looking for that game for a long time now. It's hard to find a complete one (UK) for under ?50 however.

BTW: Just ordered me a sealed copy of Redguard (German first edition. Not that I would care, I speak German fluently :) )

I loved Redguard. It was actually the first ES game I played...hadn't heard of any of the others before that. Never tried Battlespire though...might be worh a try.

I think there was just one unfortunate decision made in the creation of Battlespire that brought all this on: The use of the VESA-based video architecture at a time when Win98 was really taking hold. I was unfortunately unable to get B'Spire at release (well, 'scuse me.. Santa was unable to get it when I asked for it.. I didn't buy much in the way of entertainment media back then 'cause my income wasn't what it is now), and when I did, it was already unable to be run on my current PC without MAJOR flaming-hoop-jumping.

I have to say that now with the use of DOSBox, the only thing keeping me from trying it now is that I have been svcked back into Daggerfall so thoroughly..

In fact, on top of Battlespire, I REALLY need to get back to Terminator: Future Shock again.. That was the game that really put gamesas on my map.

I second this: Future Shock is totally awesome. Works great in DOSBox, too, though getting it to integrate with SkyNET takes a little manual editing, unfortunately.

I played Battlespire when it came out and was really surprised that it wasn't more popular. I still think it's the scariest of all the Elder Scrolls games. Maybe it was because the levels were so hard to finish. I almost gave up during the outdoor "hunt" level. I really enjoyed finding the notes throughout the game. It added a lot to the sense of purpose (and suspense).

Thanks for the article!

I must admit I never knew that SkyNet actually got released. I thought it died. I was never a fan of deathmatch play, though, so it wasn't something I followed. Forgive me if I'm only grasping part of SkyNet's purposes (and please enlighten me if so).

I tell ya, I should hit up Lucius to work on a new engine for Future Shock like he's doing with DaggerfallXL. It would rule to have Terminator with textures more in line with Fallout3 stuff.. /goose bumps/

I love battlespire, play it now and played it a lot when it came out. I felt it really immersed you into the realm more than DF did in its dungeons. And I thought all the daedra politics was a nice touch, being able to manipulate some to gain advantages over others.

No problem. I think the game had a lot going for it, but what definitely did me in was the challenge. I actually DID stop in the outdoor "hunt" level. My character had almost no HP left, no potions, and badly damaged weapons. I was being chased by a Fire Daedra and managed to swim out to sea where they couldn't chase me. I'm pretty sure I still have that save file on my old mid 90s computer, so my poor character has essentially been treading water just offshore of that horrible island for about twelve years now.

The game might not be as hard as all that though. I probably stuck with an ineffective character design for too long when I should have just restarted with better choices. It's on my lifetime to-do list to finally play through the game, just for the sake of my ES resume. I really do miss the creepy, otherworldly atmosphere. That's the ES universe I love--Tamriel and Oblivion both seem to have gotten way too friendly over the years.

The only thing that got me through the hunt level were the hints on the old compuserve gaming boards. Otherwise, I would have stopped too! You're right about the atmosphere in Battlespire, it was incredibly creepy. I would be interested in playing it again to see if I still feel that sense of atmosphere after experiencing some of the modern horror shooters. In particular, I remember a level with daedra seducers that was very frightening.

Unfortunately though, I didn't keep my original copy of the game. Maybe I can find one on ebay.

Skynet also had a single-player campaign of its own, although the live-actor mission briefings are positively painful to watch. It also could be used to upgrade Future Shock to handle 640x480.

Take a number, get in line.
