No beards?....

Post » Fri Apr 09, 2010 1:51 pm

I have looked at every character model in the Brink site's character library, and none have facial hair.(Hangover stubble does not count.) Or are female. (I guess only guys like to game) Or look like they of intelligence to them. (Small head, small eyes, no place for a brain.) They boast one-hundred thousand ways to give your character a different dialect of Jamaican accent, popped neck veins, saggy jowls, and the same style of latin+cross-inked-on-my-chest-tatto, but there is a total lack of really defining charictaristics. Every character model I have seen is a male, muscled, gangta-haired clone. Take a flit through them with a hint of cynicism, and you to will see the same, predictable, mold. Why? This revelation has been rather disappointing for me, and if you have any information that could disavow this post please do tell. I will be off somewhere. Crying. *sob*

(If you have a Jamaican accent, popped neck veins, saggy jowls, and latin+cross-inked-on-my-chest-tatto, this in no way is an insult to you or your family. Ok, maybe your mom. Just a little. BUT THAT'S IT!)

There are no female characters, this is covered in the FAQ.

As far as I can tell there are no options for facial hair, which is disappointing. I have a full beard myself and it would have been nice to have that option in the game . . . but I'm sure there will be enough masks and full helmets that I like that I won't be wanting for options.

People in Brink are stylized, they don't strike me as lacking intelligence there's just more emphasis on the nose and jawline. Personally I find them just stylized enough to not look bland but not taken to the point where they look cartoonish (although as TF2 has shown us a more cartoonish look can be pulled off well). However what's acceptable for one person can be too much for another so I can understand where people are coming from in this regard. They also do look rather similar in this regard, I'd guess there isn't much customization here - there is certainly some variety but nothing like facegen.

I'll give you intelligence vs. cartoon style, however the fact that this is the exactly 30'th fps I have seen this year with no broadsword as a weapon option is just as dissapointing. *Returns to sobbing* *hugs broadsword*.................

The hell :l

There are options for beards, if you look at some screenshots, they're just not in the main spotlight.

And I think we all have fallen victim for trolling -

Seems to me that the OP took a look at 3 of the resistance archetypes and decided what the whole game is going to look like. Which would be on par with a troll, yes. But I'm bored, so I might as well talk.

The biggest inaccuracy is what he says about accents. There are 8 or so separate accents that the player can use, from American and European to, yes, Jamaican and islander.

For the tattoos, you aren't forced to have one if you don't want to, but not all of them are gang based. A lot of them are, because it makes sense, gangs have a tendency to appear in slums.

On a similar note, complaining that a veritable army forming off of the streets ends up looking "gangsta" seems a bit silly to me. I mean, gang members are going to be the ones that actually have the weapons to start a resistance, no? At the same time, I don't see anyone on the security side that looks anything of the sort.

As far as the complaints about exaggerated bodies and faces goes, its more a complaint about the hyper-realism style of art than of the game. I find it ironic that you seem to think that exaggerating features leads to those features becoming less defining. You are correct in calling them all muscled males. The lack of females in the game has been discussed here many times. Basically, SD was looking forward to putting them into the game, but in the end they didn't have the resources or manpower to fit them in. On a side note, if you dont like how their faces look, you could always put a mask on.

The muscles that all of the characters have is most likely a choice to aid with immersion and gameplay. They wanted each of the 3 bodytypes to be easily identifiable in the middle of a firefight. If the only difference between light and heavy players was that heavies had muscles, then it might take a bit more time to tell if you just halfway killed a light or barely hurt a heavy. At the same time, the lights need to have muscles as well, wouldn't make much sense if a frail looking guy was able to reach a ledge 10' over his head.

The final problem is that the character preview on the site www.brinkthegame.com is quite old, and doesn't fully represent the finished product. At the same time there is a lack of current screenshots actually focusing on the characters. You can get a better idea of how the characters look by watching in game footage, and i happen to think it looks good.

Bottom line: The BRINK homepage does only show a part of the customisation available in the actual game.

Especially the character-"library" is only showing various combinations of the archetypes which are shown as well.

On the topic of female characters (I read the FAQ btw). I wouldn't mind paying for DLC to have added aesthetics to character customization. I dunno if anyone else shares this view, but as far as this game goes, I'm already sold. The only shortcoming I've seen so far would be this and an extra $10-20 sounds perfectly reasonable (also because I have a good amount of disposable income that's otherwise better spent going into my retirement savings, and at the age of 22, I don't think I need to worry about such things for a few more years).

The topic of female characters really deserves a thread of its own. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1115738-female-gamers-want-female-characters-yesh-i-read-the-faq/ has done very well but it's nearing 200 posts so it will be locked soon. If someone wants to review that thread and then make a new thread on the topic they are welcome to.

That will actually be the first thread on the subject to make it to 200 posts, the others were locked for problematic and inappropriate behavior so if anyone takes me up on the offer to start a new thread you really do need to put some thought and care in to it - we don't want another one of these locked at post 50 because people are misbehaving.

I still don't understand why threads on this site are locked after 200 posts, another thread is always made afterwards to continue the topic, thus, we have a perfect system for a myraid of what could easily be considered spam on other sites.

this is getting off topic, but i'll answer it.

probably because the information would be spread over... let's say 200 pages. noone is going to read all that, heck, i can't see many people read 200posts but lowering the amount of posts would be a bother to us and the moderators. so they would miss certain info, here someone reads the last thread, copies the usefull bits, puts in what the last topic was and there we have a topic with only 1 post yet all the data we would have found while reading those 11pages. this would be repeated over and over until we reach the 200pages that other forums have, but in a much smaller topic and without the spam.

that's just my opinion though, the moderators might have a different reason:)

That is the reason now, but they originally started it because large threads used to break the forums in one of their past versions. It has since been fixed, but they kept the habit to encourage new people to enter the conversation.
