[RELZ] Beast Head Inn - My first module (Quest)

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 1:09 pm

EDIT: Changed this as per anithinks suggestion.

BEAST HEAD INN -- Mini Quest

Weary from your travels, you stumble upon a secluded Inn North-West of Cheydinhal. Inside you find the Inn is in disarray. Tables are overturned. Debris litters the floor. By the bar you spot the Innkeeper, armed and armored, who looks at you with a nervous eye. The Dunmer shifts from foot to foot, and nervously taps his foot.

There is more to this situation than meets the eye...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Beast Head Inn" stays true to the lore of Oblivion. This is my first quest mod, so it takes place within a single location. The Inn has already been marked on your map, just North-West of Cheydinhal. All you must do is enter the tavern and explore how you see fit. While the quest is simple, there are many outcomes that are possible. Feel free to retry the quest multiple times and see how things change, depending on what you do.

And mostly, have fun!

COMPATIBILITY

-- Must be using the latest Oblivion patch (1.2.0416)http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Patch

-- Beast Head Inn modifies the FormID 01000CE6 (Tamriel, Wilderness 20,28

INSTALLATION

Copy the files within the DATA folder into the DATA folder within your Oblivion directory. Do not be taken aback when you hear no Voice Over. I am not a V.O. actor, so I have placed blank audio files to allow the player enough time to read the dialogue text.

If you discover any bugs, please let me know. I'll always be willing to tweak with this mod to make it as clean as possible. Thanks!

Congrats on your first release! :celebration: I've requested the moderators to add a "[Relz]" tag to this thread to gerner more attention.

BTW, I though mod stood for "modification", not "module". ;)

PS: If you have not, you should clean the mod using TES4Edit. See http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/TES4Edit_Cleaning_Guide#Section_.232:_Actual_Cleaning_Instructions how to.

Might want to add notes about compatibility of this mod with say, UL mods etc. Not sure if it conflicts with any of the UL mods. Also, add a better description (make it more intriguing), and notes on lore friendliness (if applicable). And make the download link in the OP more conspicuous. :)

Thanks for being so helpful, anithinks.

I think "mod" can stand for either "modification" or "module" - but I usually use the former. :)

Mod in games generally stands for modification. Module is a part of a whole, if you will. Like the system that manages physics, the AI system, and so forth.

Also, sounds like the Silent Voice plugin could be handy here. Just in case folks don't notice that there is no dialogue

Your esp should be in the data folder as well. So you may want to fix the package :)

Now, where is this location of the inn? How do we start it? You should at least have a basic readme file.

In a heavily modded game, the location may conflict, so it would be easiest for me to check it if I knew where it was.

Thanks for all the feedback! This is some of the basic stuff that I wasn't aware of that makes a lot of sense once pointed out. I'll repackage it and update the link.

As of now I don't think it should conflict with any other Mod. I just used the base stuff and edited one Wilderness cell. But I'll go ahead and add a Readme file to explain things like how I expect the user to start (It's an already discovered location near Chorrol).

I'll make these changes and get a new release out soon.

A well written and intriguing description :goodjob:

You may also want to point out the optional use of the OBSE plugin called http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16622, which negates the need to put blank audio files (and thus reduces the mod size). Also might want to point out that the mod is cleaned through TES4Edit.

Usually, mod authors also report their mod in the mods in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1233101-rel-boss-better-oblivion-sorting-software/ so that it can be sorted correctly. They need the esp file name, link on TESNexus, the mod cleanliness status, and the file CRC (all these can be done in Wrye Bash's BAIN by right-clicking on the esp file, and choosing the option of BOSS lg report). If you don't, someone other kind soul will usually report it within a week.

Is there a recommended level for this mod (if that even matters)?

Keep up the good work :)

I downloaded this earlier, but I won't get over to that area for a couple days (I tend to drop things in and forget about them until I run across them. :) ) I'll let you know how it goes.

BTW, I found 1 ITM record.

Finally got a chance to check it out. Small quest, but well done for a first-timer.

Spoiler
The first time I talked to him, I was immediately suspicious... after accepting his "quest", I checked behind the counter and found the innkeeper. He fell quickly beneath my blade.

The second time, I accepted the quest. My one complaint here is that we never find out why he wants the heirloom. Otherwise, it worked well.

I found a couple really minor issues: The chest upstairs needs to be raised slightly (it's sunk into the table), and the back side of the bar is open at one end.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I'll address the chest and bar opening. I do know the issue with the bar is just that the particular set piece isn't really meant to be used that way. I'll have to find something to fill it in.

As far as your complaint:
Spoiler
The idea is that I want to extend the quest after this point. As it is I felt I would get in over my head if I went for the hole story right off. Since you have two branching paths. One where you help him and he buggers off (this would give you the quest topic to ask about the heirloom to other people and get the next step). The other branch is you kill him but still have the heirloom. You can ask around about them and are taken into a different direction.

I'll be getting around to extending it to the full story

Ah, I see. That's cool - I'll look forward to the rest of it.

I just downloaded it today - 2 items off the bat, that WalkerInShadows also noticed:
1)You need to clean it with TES4Edit procedure I linked above - still shows 1 ITM. Use the latest TES4Edit.
2) Package it in BAIN friendly format, using .7z archive, using the following structure:
Beast Head Inn.7z
|-Sounds
|-Docs ->Insert Readme here, rename readme to say "Beast Head Inn Readme.txt"
|-BeastHeadInn.esp

There should be no subfolder under the 7 zip, essentially, when you extract here, there should be no folder called "Beast Head Inn" above the sounds folder and the esp file etc.
