Beast Races - full face helmets and boots

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 11:53 pm

If you played Morrowind, you know that the beast races were a lot more unique and less human than they were in Oblivion. They had very animalistic legs and claws, not to mention long faces and huge feet. The Khajiits' bodies looked extremely cat-like, and the Argonians literally looked like evolved lizards. Because of their unique form, they could not wear full-face helmets or boots/shoes. When Oblivion came out, beast races were much more human-like. From their legs and feet, to the shapes of their heads, they looked quite a bit more human. Even their body styles changed to a muscular human-like form. Because of these changes in Oblivion, beast races could wear boots and full-face helmets. Which style do you prefer and why?

Oblivion's style for one reason; you're actually penalized in the form of less armor/enchantment slots for choosing a beast race in Morrowind. Also, Morrowind is so far the odd-man-out when it comes to how the beast races were designed, in all the other games, they followed a more-or-less human bodyplan.

...Not sure. It's awesome to have advantages and disadvantages between races, but at the same time I'd rather have the option than not. It would be cool if there were argonian exclusive helmets and boots.

That's true, but a lot of people appreciate the fact that certain races have unique advantages and disadvantages. Ex: while Argonians cannot wear boots, they can breath underwater and run a lot faster.

My only reply is to point out that Khajiit and Argonians have snouts. How the hell are they supposed to fit those in a full face helmet? But this can be solved by helmets just becoming open faced and boots becoming shinguards when they're equipped on one of the beasts races.

This is what I think would be cool. Like, for each set of armor, there'd be differently designed helmets (and boots maybe?) for the beast races. Something like that.

Probably not going to happen though.

My thinking is along the same line as these guys, more-or-less.

I liked that in Morrowind Argonians and Khajiits were more beastly, less human in form. Variation and all that. I would like to see that again, rather than the animalised-human forms of Oblivion. If the other TES games are similar in approach to these forms, I couldn't say, I've only ever played MW and OB.

I don't think that these races should be unable to wear helmets or boots. I'd like to see specific items for these races, perhaps, at least for appearance sake. Or standard items should just automatically 'modify' in consideration of snouts and longer toes or whatever - like what Broken-Scale said.

I've always preferred the Morrowind style just because it made playing as a beast race more unique. I personally think your race is the biggest choice you make during character gen, although this will be less so in Skyrim without favored attributes. Still, I thought they wanted to make the races each more unique - if they give each some genuinely interesting and useful racial abilities this time, all the more reason to go the extra mile with restricting equipment. I mean, you could still have open-faced helmets and the like for them - if anything the new crafting system would be perfect for that sort of thing.

^Actually, I've read/heard about how each race will be more defined. I'm really wish I had more info on the matter. :(

i prefer the MORROWIND approach because it made the beast-races unique!
my brother literally made an argonian in oblivion and w/ FULL helm/boots the only way i could tell it was an argonian was the tail... which is ridiculous since those 2 races are meant to be beast-like.

Why does having beast legs automatically mean no boots? Why cant we have some cool beast shaped boots?

i don't want to be penalized for choosing a beast race and not being able to wear some armor and not being able to customize my character the way i want. The only way the morrowind system would work is if they had bigger race advantages at the beginning than they did in OB

It would be better if there were specially designed armors for the two beast races, which had to be purchased separately. It would be kinda limiting, but more realistic. Kahjiit and Argonians are bound to have armor of some kind in their respective homelands, and it would have been designed for them. I'd like to say a lot of this is just Beth not wanting to make new skeletons and animations, but that's more Bioware laziness and it has no part in the glorious Elder Scrolls.

That's kind of what RPG choices are about. Each decision you make has ups and downs. So choosing to be an Argonian for example lets you breath underwater and run a lot faster, however you can't wear boots. That's just how decision making works in game like TES. No matter what you choose, you're going to be "penalized" in some way, by not gaining whatever perks you would get by going with another choice.

Just having beast models for helmets, boots and gloves (to use claws in HtH), could fix the problem.
In Skyrim finding such item should be rare (since main population is humanoid),
but each traditional helmet, boot set, and glove could be resmithed/recrafted into beast model (by armorer or by yourself)
Besides beast helmets could have slots for argonian horns (something most argonian players would like to see)
But once again "this would make game unnecessary complex"
(funny argument used by many casual TES fans. Funny because only complex game is Tetris at speed 10+)
(edit: and X3)

I think every clothing and armor piece is going to change shape to fit everyone. Remember that this time there are going to be different body shapes/sizes as well. In my opinion it would be great if we had to attune armors at a smith before they fit and we can use them.

If I had to choose Morrowind or Oblivion then I choose Oblivion very easily. I'd prefer a middle ground though, and they certainly should be able to use helmets and boots. I don't want to see a return to the anatomically questionable legs Morrowind used especially. Those would not be good for a two legged creature.

All is posible, it all depends on developer lazines, in MW i really havent any problems with not weaing boots and full helmets (best helmet was open anyway). In oblivion i havent even wore a helmet for human races, to much work on shaping the head in facegen just to wach some bucket on my head,

While full helmets are bit diffrent story, its really easy to solve boots "problem".
Just split the boot mesh into foot part and ankle part, if beast race equips it, the model do not display the foot part, easy and do not require making additional models

I want unique armors. I like my beasts to look like actual beasts and race-specific armor for them would be awesome. It's hardly impossible to design helmets and http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w101/Razorpony/Crebain/Ebony.jpg as someone already pointed out. Having them unable to wear boots and closed helms is just laziness, nothing more.
