[Relz] Beautiful Books Volume I: Grimoires

Post » Tue Apr 06, 2010 9:51 am

The new grimoires are finally up. Enjoy!

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8438

This mod adds eight unique grimoires, one for each school of magic: alteration, conjuration, destruction, illusion, mysticism, and restoration, as well as two special ones.
The Dwemer grimoire is related to enchanting, and the necromancer's grimoire has a special effect.

Each one has a unique cover and icons, and are colored related to their school of magic. Some have a bit of added character (such as scorch marks on the destruction book, claw marks on the conjuration book, or a strange invisible eye on the illusion book).
These book are written in daedric, and are primarily for roleplaying purposes.

They are not skillbooks, but they do have specially scripted enhancements in the standard version:
- The six grimoires related to the different spell schools, and the enchanting grimoire, all add five points in their related skill. This is an ability that will be removed after an hour.
- You cannot stack the effects of the grimoires. Only one can be active at a time. This was done for reasons of balance. You must wait an hour for the effect to wear off before you can benefit from reading another grimoire.
- The Necromancer's grimoire is a little bit special. It comes with a benefit and a curse. This grimoire will summon a powerful skeleton companion, which will follow you for an hour before disappearing. It has proper follow scripting so it will be hard to lose.
- The skeleton companion is based on the skeleton war-wizard, so its fairly powerful. It disappears on death just like a summon though, so it cannot be looted.
- While under the influence of the Necromancer's grimoire, your personality will drop significantly. This effect will be removed once the grimoire wears off and you no longer have a skeleton following you around and scaring the locals.

The six spell books can be bought in Dorisa Darvel's bookshop in Balmora.
The Dwemer grimoire and Necromancer's grimoire must be found. I have placed them each somewhere in the game world.

There are two different esp files. Use one or the other, but not both:

- BB_Grimoires: Standard version, with added spell effects. Also contains its own book rotate scripting.

- BB_Grimoires_Enhanced: Writing Enhanced version. These books are blank, and make use of the MWE_Writing scripts so that you can write in them.
These do NOT have the special spell scripting of the standard version.
Requires Writing Enhanced!

*****************************
Compatibility:

This mod is fully compatible with Book Rotate, but does not require it. It contains its own stand-alone book rotate scripting.

There should be no incompatibilities unless a mod alters Dorisa Darvel's bookshop significantly.
In that case, the book chest might end up in a funny place, but that is all.

Looks beautiful! Can they be used as resources?

I look forward to future releases. :)

Yes, they can be used as a resource. I'll be releasing another mod in this series for use with Writing Enhanced that deals just with journals and memoirs next (after I finish my next versions of BoV and UL, which are almost done), and they may be used as a resource as well. All I ask is for proper credit due. :)

I thought you did a great job of the covers - they blend in well with the game colours and the little touches show some real thought

It's generous of you to allow them to be used as a resource

Don′t know but the books in MW always fascinated me and the available book jackets mods are so nice, that it′s just cool to build up your own library and hunt down books that you don′t own or that are rare. And the more books (and diversed jackets) the better! :)

Awesome work, Stuperstar! Thanks so much for doing this! And a new update for BoV? I was gonna install the current version but I'll just wait until the new version to avoid errors.
And you're going to make a new version of these grimoire mods too?
Could you make a journal? Like, an old tattered, worn journal? It seems odd that the Player always writes in their journal throughout the game (even in Daggerfall and Arena) yet the Player doesn't have an actual journal or an inkpen. I'm sure a journal notebook type texture would be pretty easy to create. I like to have Sellus Gravius give it to the Player upon leaving the Census Office. He could say something like "Here's an old notebook. I never use it. Use it to keep track of what you're doing and your assignments. It'll come in handy." Or something like that. And you could have it added to the players inventory. And when you look at it, you see your first log entry, which is of course, instructions to go see Caius over in Balmora.
What are your thoughts?

My next book mod, after BoV is finished will be a bunch of journals that you can purchase for use with Writing Enhanced. I can't remember if Journal Enhanced actually gives you a book to write in, but you could certainly write your memoirs using MWE. Some will be nice looking, others will be ratty and tattered and worn. You'll have your pick. :)

An excellent idea and maybe similar to the Player's Diary mod for Oblivion.

I'm sure that was just a slip of the fingers but Journal Enhanced allows the player to write custom notes in their journal from within the game so there's no need to acquire any books to use it (you do need a quill and inkwell though).

Writing Enhanced does scatter some blank books and scrolls around the game world, from the Writing Enhanced manual:
The following locations each sell 8 blank books and 7 blank scrolls:
1. Seyda Neen, Arrille's Tradehouse - Arrille*
2. Balmora, Dorisa Darvel: Bookseller - Dorisa Darvel
3. Ald-ruhn, Codus Callonus: Bookseller - Codus Callonus
4. Khuul, Thongar's Tradehouse - Thongar*
5. Vivec, Jobasha's Rare Books - Jobasha
6. Suran, Ralds Oril: Trader - Ralds Oril*
7. Molag Mar, Vasesius Viciulus: Trader - Vasesius Viciulus*
8. Sadrith Mora, Wolverine Hall: Mage's Guild - Dabienne Mornardl
9. Tel Mora, Berwen: Trader - Berwen*
10. Dagon Fel, Heifnir: Trader - Heifnir
* Also sells Quill and Inkwell
Although they just use standard meshes.

This one is also going on my mod list for next time. I love mods that enhance the role-playing atmosphere of the game.

The thing I'm noticing using Writing Enhanced to do my character's journal for uploading is that the blank books they give you don't allow for very much lengthy writing. I had a journal of maybe 6 days before it got full. Something that allows for more (infinite?) length would be awesome. Also, book jackets for the Writing Enhanced books.

I won't be altering the original Writing Enhanced books, but I will be making sets of new ones that use the same scripting, and there will be quite a few of them.

I'm afraid the character limit in Writing Enhanced probably has something to do with the character limit in regular game books, so there's probably nothing that can be done about that unfortunately.
