Beautiful sunsets and sunrises?

Post » Fri Aug 13, 2010 4:56 am

After looking at all the pictures from the GI-article one more time I couldn't help to notice how gloomy the weather looked like. The weather gave me a somewhat "dark" feeling.
Don't get me wrong, I feel that it can really contribute to a great atmosphere; BUT I don't want them to overdo it. I want really beautiful sunsets and sunrises. Not all the time, but some of the time!
I want to be able to stare at the sunset/sunrise and say "Darn, that's really beautiful".

The North is known for having some really beautiful sunsets and sunrises. I know, I practically live there. And I hope that Skyrim will have it sometimes.

You may wonder what the definition of beautiful is. It's a tricky question. Highly subjective of course.
But according to me, I think these videos show some beautiful sunsets and sunrises:

On a note, I think god rays (Crepuscular rays) is somewhat related to this topic. I think they should also exist. It makes sunrises and sunsets so much more beautiful (in my opinion).
Here's another thread of mine though, focusing specifically on god rays: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1154978-god-rays-crepuscular-rays/page__st__40__p__16908528__hl__god+rays__fromsearch__1#entry16908528

Personally I find gloomy dark clouds with rain more beautiful than any sunrise. But yea, of course they should implement these things

No. We should just have it statically change to night and day every 12 hours. Who wants beautiful scenery? Pfffft!

:P
Well, there have been several threads before about people wanting Skyrim to have this "dark" feeling to it. Dark and gloomy. Many people seem to like it.
I love that partly. But I want, at some times, there to be really beautiful northern sunsets and sunrises, kind of as seen in the video examples.

Sometimes doesn't really make sense though. Sun rises and sets the same everyday. It should ALWAYS be beautiful. I doubt that would detract from the gloominess. It's only about an in game hour or 2 a day.

Well, I know. But sunsets and sunrises aren't beautiful all of the time. Sometimes they are very dark and gloomy. Sometimes the sunlight isn't really viewable that much.
Sometimes it's fog, etc, etc. But sometimes, they're also amazingly beautiful.

After having seen the GI-pictures (which all have a gloomy weather) and seen so many threads about "dark and gloomy" feeling of weather, I just don't want it to be like that all of the time in the game.

We will probably see a variety of weather in skyrim according to the screenshots. Some areas look gloomy and cloudy, and some look sunny and beautiful. It kinda depends on where you are most likely.

Yeah, but imagine being out in the cold wilderness all night and then suddenly, you spot a small light. You run closer and hear the sound of merry music playing. It is a small village festival. People are dancing and singing and laughing, warm orange light seeping from lanterns hung between houses. A small, cosy oasis in the wilderness.

It probably won't be that good, but that's the sort of feeling I think would be cool.

Do I want them? Yes, of course I do.

Do I think they are a priority? No, of course not.

Did you see the screen of the birch woodland at sunset? The one with the crouching figure.

I don't think you have to worry about it :hehe:

I looked at it again. I actually think it looks gloomy. Then again he's not looking at the sun.

The sunsets in Oblivion were very pretty for their time I think.
It has also been declared by a dev that he thought he was very proud of the work they had done on clouds.
I hope they'll have some beautiful sunsets/sunrises. I hope.

But perhaps I'm overreacting? Not sure. :P

This might be a bit off-topic but besides beautiful sun lighting effects (which the game most likely will have) I would love to see some northern lights every once in a while.

It's kinda off topic yes, but I agree. I would love to see aurora borealis on some occassions. Would be awesome.

Just because Bethesda seems to be taking Skyrim towards a more dark tone doesn't mean we can't still have things in the world that are beautiful, like sunrise/sets. I'd think they'd contrast well with the apparent bleakness, actually.

I understand your sarcasm but when all the screens in the GI-article had pictures of dark/gloomy weather, I worried that that would be overdone and we'd not see any, what I call, beautiful sunsets and sunrises.
Even though, there seems to be people who doesn't think this is as obvious one can claim it to be; as seen in the poll (unless the votes are sarcastic as well) :)

They will definitely be in. I think I can say that pretty forcefully without actually knowing.

Dark/gloomy weather in a couple of screensots doesnt mean anything. If they want to make the game look and feel 'dark', that doesnt mean it has to be ugly, there's no logic reason to make a game like this 'ugly'.

I did not say that dark/gloomy equals ugly :)
When dark/gloomy weather was in every screenshot, and when there have been many threads praising its atmospheric feeling (which I do partly too, I just want there to be more variation); it made me wonder how much they are implemented or not.
I hope some. The reason that some people find it already obvious makes me feel a bit better that Bethesda isn't so stupid that they haven't included it already.

But you make a poll where people can vote to say "no" to beautiful sunsets, in other words people can vote for ugly sunsets! :P

You ask people if they want a beautifull sunset or an ugly sunset, if thats not what this topic is about your poll is wrong (and wasn't needed in the first place)

I'm not sure. It depends on how it looks with Skyrim. The atmosphere right now looks very dark, but as people have said that just from the few screenshots we've had. I guess we'll see.
