Beautiful Water!

Post » Sat Jan 01, 2011 4:47 am

I did a search for water on all Oblivion forums, but nothing came up.
How do you all have set up your water (textures, oblivion.ini, shaders) ?

I'd also really like to get rid of the ugly blocky water reflections of buildings & bridges. I only know about the water reflection 0.3 shader, but it is very strong and the blocky artifacts still persist.

Right now I'm using Enhanced Water 2.0 HDMI and haven't touched the .ini apart from surfacefps.

I don't want to be a killjoy, but I haven't found a mod yet that looks better than the good old vanilla water. Custom waters are either reflective like it's not water but mercury or they are so transparent that even a pristine mountain lake would blush of shame. Underwater sight is in most cases so unrealistically high that you sometimes don't even know whether you're underwater or not - wouldn't there be the water surface that looks like cooking top. I think the vanilla water looks ok for what it is and the underwater sight is realistic at least. Not much to find underwater anyway.

Don't think you can get rid of the blocky part of the water, it's part of the LOD and not part of the close up, detail water.

I changed these settings as per Enhanced Water readme:

bUseWaterReflectionsStatics to 1
bUseWaterReflectionsMisc=1
bUseWaterReflectionsStatics=1
bUseWaterReflectionsTrees=1
bUseWaterReflectionsActors=1

Enhanced Water and Vibrant Textures installed.

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz198/gothemasticator/Oblivion%20Screenshot%20examples/EdgeDetectionandCelShading.jpg a nice one with Edge Detection and Cel Shading thrown into the mix. And a final one, http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz198/gothemasticator/Oblivion%20Screenshot%20examples/VibrantTexturesandEnhancedWater4.jpg, shows reflections pretty well.

Do my screenshots show what you consider to be a problem? 'Cause I'm pretty happy.

I use this to remove blocky reflections. It's pretty good.

I think that disables the water ripples, though... that's why I've not been using it. Blocky reflections are nothing compared to rippleless water when it comes to immersion breakers :shrug:

The ripples stay, it's just that distant LOD reflections aren't as defined anymore because they are blurred. Just depends how hi you have your AF setting set to in your Video Cards advanced config options.

I think you're misunderstanding me... I mean the ripples created by characters when they move through the water, and ripples during rain.

Well, that sounds pretty good.:)
The downloadpage's screenshots indeed show ripples ánd blurred reflections.
Is there a significant performance hit coming with that?

And I do think Enhanced Water does improve on vanilla a bit(though, of course, realism ,and 'prettiness' for that matter, and is always subjective..except in the case of http://susancoffey.deviantart.com/, perhaps), though I 'm still not entirely sure if the surface change is all that much of good trade-in for the FPS drop.

Edit:
Ah, disruption ripples, that'd be a bummer.Since that's about the only thing that gives the game's water an actual liquid feel, if ti weren't for the floating of objects.

Bummer! Just testet and Water Reflection Blur does indeed remove the ripples caused by actors, but not those caused by rain. Damned, I wanted you guys to be wrong...

Awww, I could not play without ripples. My biggest venture to change my cozy Enhanced Water v20 HD setup is trying to upgrade to Enhanced Water HDMI--haven't had a chance to see what it looks like yet.

I can't play without ripples, either. I wanted to be wrong :( (What? There's a first time for everything :P) But I don't think the HDMI version is any different. It's just got the SI addon merged in. And it makes it clearer underwater (author's preference; I prefer the original mod's underwater fog, but load order real estate is expensive in my area).

Oh, I did not realize it made underwater clear. I prefer murky, really. I mean, they are lakes. They are supposed to be murky, right? :P

My thoughts exactly, but I'm hesitant to add even a single unnecessary .esp to my load order XD
