Becoming a merchant

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:17 am

I would love to be able to buy my own carridge and use it to buy and sell goods. For example, lets say they ran out of pewter forks in Town A. I would go to City A/B/C and find the best price. Say 2 gold per fork. I would buy say 3000 and bring them to Town A. However carridges would cost alot. Bandits would patrol the maion roads, so you would risk losing out to another merchant and arriving with 3000 worthless forks. And if you arn't the combat type, you will need to buy guards which will cost say 15% profit each. However if all goes well a succesful player could make his own empire. Unlawful players might be able to sabotage other merchanters and possibly even steal there goods. Of course, if they're found out(A survivor escapes and notices that the bandits put the goods on one of your carridges etc.) then your whole fortune is gone. You will become the beggar searching for jobs. Of course you could do it without however now you're limited by weight, this lessons the restriction.

The problem with becoming a merchant in TES games (or at least in Oblivion) is that you're either begging for money in the street early on or you have so much money it becomes meaningless and you have nothing to spend it on.

Bump

Really, a two minute bump?

I like the idea of becoming a merchant but your ideas have a bit too much complexity for what is considered to be a combat orientated game.

I think something other than simply investing 500 gold into a shop would be good....By the time I got to do that in Oblivion I was already stupidy rich and had nothing left to spend my hundreds of thousands on.

I wanna own the shop, and employ the shopkepers/bartenders...I really want to own a tavern,or a chain of taverns...with a free room whenever I turn up for a night..

I would love to be able to display my loot in said tavern and generally decorate it with my own style, given some choices of furnishings etc....and possibly even retire there as an aged and scarred adventurer.

Maybe the option to rent properties considering TH has already said that you will be able to buy more houses in Skyrim... Thoughts?

That would mean when the landlord starts shouting...people will listen.

Don't be so impatient, I guess.

I don't see this happening btw, it doesn't smell like a feature from an Elder Scrolls game.

Everyone saying to be patient, this topic was on page 3. I bumped it about 12 hours after I posted it. If I hadn't it wouldn't have been read.

I played a MW character that was a entrepreneur. I used nearly a dozen buisness sim mods from owning your own mine, undergroud skooma operation, inns, etc it was very fun.

Wait, nevermind 3rd page. :)

I think it's a good idea but need a little bit more fleshing out. I'm not the person to do that though.

I think you're gonna be able to buy shops and sell stuff there but more than that I don't think.

I do this anyway :) don't need it to be deeply implemented when I'm low on cash but high on loot(which is always - I'm a hoarder ) I just go around from town to town selling shiznit.
I don't know why I hoard I think I just keep items for later when I think I'll need them but I never do....

A merchant's guild would be nice. Start out as a bodyguard protecting traveling merchants from highwaymen, and work your way up to an owner of several shops.

They've already stated that they're making quite a complex economy. This may well mean that prices fluctuate, and also vary from region to region. If that's the case, it's entirely possible you could buy a certain commodity in an area where it is abundant and cheap, then transport it to somewhere where it is in scarce supply, and sell it for profit. Maybe the more unscrupulous merchants could burn down the village mill to drive the price of flour up, before importing some from a different area and selling it for extortionate prices...

However, I fear that with fast travel, this would be too easy a method for making money. Would need some thought.

Whenever I do this myself I don't fast travel purely because I might miss opportunities to sell my stuff

And for good reason because it's a stupid idea. Merchant is another word for businessman. If you want to be a businessman then you must like business games(as if your screen name wasn't a dead giveaway). If you like business games you must like RollerCoaster Tycoon. If you like RollerCoaster Tycoon then you have no business posting here. Stay away from my Skyrim.

Actually it's not a bad idea. In TES it's "you can be whoever you want to be" (even though you're destined to be Dovahkhiin). There's a big freedom. If you want to farm, you can do that now. If you want to smith, you can do that now. If you want to mine, you can do that now. Etc etc.
It's not a stupid to think that you might run a business as any other merchant in Skyrim for that reason.

I don't know how long it would last for me. I would give it a go, but in the end I will most likely resort to exploring to make my fortune. Still a nice feature. :foodndrink:

No, actually Beth has always tried to make TES games to where you can "play any kind of character you want", so if someone wants to play a merchant type of character they should be able to. It is a good idea but I don't see it being implemented in Skyrim.

For a start, there are no bandits in rollercoster tycoon. My name is Greed378 because it has been my name for games for a long time. And it's easy to remember. Your logic fails. If I like Roller coaster tycoon I cannot like Skyrim? If I want to take advantage of economy, a feature implemented by The game creators then I must be a buisnessman? Ok...

Yeah so I can role-play a Lawrence character (Spice and Wolf).

That show made being a merchant sound so fascinating.

Professions like blacksmithing and a job like being a merchant are two different things. On one side you have the ability to make your own equipment for adventuring. On the other side, you have the ability to be an NPC. I don't think it's wise to implement NPC-specific roles for players (and then program an entire system for other NPC's to come and browse whatever wares you're selling). It's just not practical.
