Bee all that you can Bee

This is a pretty random request.

yeah, this thread was posted on the basis that it was kinda random. as i said in my op, I was more than half way through a thread asking for some/most NPCs to find shelter in bad weather, which isn't SO random, but i found that thread boring (yet i still would love that), and the thought of them running for shelter in a sudden thunderstorm reminded me of NPC's running from Beehives in Metal Gear Solid 3...

It's random, but maybe not so much when you know the thought process behind it.

I could see beehives as more of an environmental aesthetic or something like oil lamps Todd talks about. But as an actual weapon you release not so much.

I could at the very least see devs add them as just background and detail element that you can routinely collect alchmey/cooking ingrediants from

Seldom is there a pop-culture reference i don't understand, but if this is one, then I have been bested.

edit: WAIT, i think i remember seeing Nicolas cage screaming about some bees on a clip on conan obrien... yeah i remember it... his head was in a cage right?

I'm not a big nicolas cage fan... in fact if anything i'm a nicolas cage anti-fan, if there is such a thing.

At first this thread was going to be about how bad weather should cause NPCs to find shelter, but I got sidetracked with this idea of beehives, and i felt most everyone would agree with the weather part to some extent... which is boring. so I decided to do a topic about an idea that's kinda a little more out there:

Beehives (wasp/hornet nest):

-usually in a tree (though not always). Never too far north, they only thrive where flowers can bloom.
-You can shoot it down with an arrow (or spell), and the bee's will unleash their fury on those around the area of the beehive (good for clearing out a small bandit camp)
-If you manage to get close enough without disturbing/destoying it, you can put the Beehive in a secured bag you can then do things like release them into a room to clear it out. (this is Bruce Lee inspired... but he used a snake)
-A Beehive has the ingredients "honey" and "beeswax", which can be used with alchemy

Bees:

-They do damage over time.
-They can't go in water
-certain destruction spells or torches destroy the bees easily
-You might find non-hostile Bees on flowers in the wilderness, or just flying around (with purpose)
-They don't attack you if you don't disturb them
-The damage done by the bees would diminish over time, even if you stand still (as they die from stinging you)

I do realize this might be harder to implement than it's worth, but such a small addition would be GREAT for my stealth character. I don't have the slightest clue about how long they would need to implement beehives, but I agree that if it takes too long (for even a more basic bee system), this would all be superfluous.

I should point out that there were bees in Bioshock, and if it worked somewhat like those i would be satisfied http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDx95dXF0es

I got this idea partially from Metal Gear Solid 3 too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn7q_Psx_Kc <--this video doesn't show him actually shoot it down, but you can tell Snake wants to. I just couldn't find a good video showing it in action. When it happens in game, It happens like how you would imagine, and it makes nearby NPCs run away (and considering it was last-gen it seemed pretty damn realistic. It wouldn't even need to be much better for Skyrim).
I would love to see bees but...bees as an enemy creature, really? Could you imagine the Dovakhiin being killed by bees? Unless they're gigantic super-bees then I think they should just be there for scenic purposes and the hives for ingredients. Maybe they could buzz around you a bit and get in your face for a while if you annoy them...but I really don't see them doing damage.

There was a mod in Morrowind which added wasps - i hated them - the battlemusic would start but I could never see what was coming to get me - if I was in Balmora suddely a guard would come running towards me swinging his sword and i'd wonder what the heck was going on - if the wasp got you they had a nasty poison sting - I like the idea of seeing beehives as eyecandy but I don't want to see them as a potential enemy in game.

SOme species of bees can kill a human pretty easily if they all attack you in a swarm. I think the bee's should be a danger to new adventurers, but they should do damage equivalent to a very low level spell.

I know that if there is honey and ingredients, potions, and beverages could be made, such as mead, I would definitely love that in-game...

Well some giant Bees or Wasps can be done at last in borders with Morrowind
where they used as mounts

Lesser wild species can be found (I believe giant mountable was enchanted by alchemy and magic breeds), they can live in underground lairs and caves where we can harvest honey and wax from combs and powerful poison from bodies of Bee as alchemical ingredients, poison can have both healing and damaging properties

Well Skyrim has different climatic zones, not completely covered by ice shield like antarctic, for example in Russia what has similar to Skyrim climate honeymaking is very old folk work
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5a/Lithuania_Stripeikiai_Honeymaking_Museum.jpg
Its start as harvesting of honey from wild Bee hives in tree hollows, then evolve into apiary bee-gardening
Even Bears in Russian language Медведь mean Who know where honey lies, because bears like honey and search for it, and harvesters can use marks of bears as navigation when searching for hives also.

I don't know, I've never been there, have you? I just know a nord favorite "Mead" is brewed from honey so i would imagine Skyrim would have it.
and bees ARE in Russia, which is know for bad winters in certain regions, and since Nirn seems to rotate on an axis that remains continuously adjacent to the sun (since season don't happen) these things like habitable zones for animals (and bees) might be slightly skewed.

and like was said, there's a spectrum of different climate zones in Skyrim.

It could definitely be a cool little touch. Nehrim had beehives that you could harvest honey from, but not wild ones like you're suggesting.

I've always liked the idea of small, dangerous enemies that present a different challenge from the massive monsters most people fear. Remember how the most annoying enemies in Dead Space were the tiny little swarmers? haha

And yeah, throwing jars of bees at people would be awesome.

Super-killer-bees are always a possibility... perhaps there could be both. They could act sorta like those huge flies in Fallout (i forget what they were called)

Boatflys.

As for this idea. I'm sorry but I juss don't see it happening. There's a point where game immersion is taken to far. Foxusing on cooking and cutting down trees for fire seems more enticing than a bee hive and I feel if it were to be added one of those other immersion based ideas would be thrown out.

This idea bears alot of possibilities that could be implemented. I support it because honey would be very important in alchemy & cooking. Honey was used a salve for cuts & burns in ancient Egypt, no reason it couldn't make it in except for time constraints.

I'd like to see a few hives around the town areas with perhaps a few bees going about their work (as some people have already mentioned that honey for the mead has to came from somewhere - and the hive useable for a honey alchemy component) but I dont think that anything regarding 'angry bees' is needed.

That bit about cutting down trees has bees written all over it!

2 NPC's performing the task of felling a tree don't notice the beehive, hilarity ensues!
