Bee all that you can Bee

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:57 am

At first this thread was going to be about how bad weather should cause NPCs to find shelter, but I got sidetracked with this idea of beehives, and i felt most everyone would agree with the weather part to some extent... which is boring. so I decided to do a topic about an idea that's kinda a little more out there:

Beehives (wasp/hornet nest):

-usually in a tree (though not always). Never too far north, they only thrive where flowers can bloom.
-You can shoot it down with an arrow (or spell), and the bee's will unleash their fury on those around the area of the beehive (good for clearing out a small bandit camp)
-If you manage to get close enough without disturbing/destoying it, you can put the Beehive in a secured bag you can then do things like release them into a room to clear it out. (this is Bruce Lee inspired... but he used a snake)
-A Beehive has the ingredients "honey" and "beeswax", which can be used with alchemy

Bees:

-They do damage over time.
-They can't go in water
-certain destruction spells or torches destroy the bees easily
-You might find non-hostile Bees on flowers in the wilderness, or just flying around (with purpose)
-They don't attack you if you don't disturb them
-The damage done by the bees would diminish over time, even if you stand still (as they die from stinging you)

I do realize this might be harder to implement than it's worth, but such a small addition would be GREAT for my stealth character. I don't have the slightest clue about how long they would need to implement beehives, but I agree that if it takes too long (for even a more basic bee system), this would all be superfluous.

I should point out that there were bees in Bioshock, and if it worked somewhat like those i would be satisfied http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDx95dXF0es

I got this idea partially from Metal Gear Solid 3 too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn7q_Psx_Kc <--this video doesn't show him actually shoot it down, but you can tell Snake wants to. I just couldn't find a good video showing it in action. When it happens in game, It happens like how you would imagine, and it makes nearby NPCs run away (and considering it was last-gen it seemed pretty damn realistic. It wouldn't even need to be much better for Skyrim).

you only seem to take people into consideration... what about monsters or dragons who come at you after you shoot down a beehive?

they'd have to take the time to program reactions with every creature... dragons likely wouldnt be bothered at all, while trolls might get pissed off, giants would... probably not be too bothered, but all the buzzing would probably annoy them.

not to mention, i find it weird seeing a person who kills dragons, having a battle against bees.

Well of course Zombies or bears wouldn't be disturbed. anything with super thick skin (like giants) or thick scales (like dragons) shouldn't be disturbed either. Mainly just people would be concerned I believe. I didn't think about the beast races though...

Its Skyrim, I picture the bees being half a foot in length, with stingers as strong as steel, and of appropriate enough length to puncture armor.
Although that would make their bee hives difficult to move, due to size...

And lets not forget smoke calms bees.

Super-killer-bees are always a possibility... perhaps there could be both. They could act sorta like those huge flies in Fallout (i forget what they were called)

same here. It's just an idea i had. as stated in my OP If this would take too long to implement, i wouldn't want this.

perhaps a spell that summons a swarm of bee's would be good too. OR even a spell that makes people THINK they are getting attacked by a bunch of bees.

Any wasps or bees that make a hive this far north are gonna die way before we get close to them, even if they nest in the greeny parts. Bees and their cousins don't come near north Canada until late late summer, they're more scared of the cold then we are of them.

Mud-flies on the other hand... (Flying mud crabs for the imaginative impaired.)

I can hardly imagine this been in the game but the idea seems hilarious to me.
A dragon swoops down from the skies - RELEASE THE BEES!!!!!

I would love to walk into a village and unleash bees upon the unsuspecting people.

STOP! you violated the law - unleash the bees

Im voting Yes

Also bethesda can sell bee armour and upgraded sting damage as dlc

If there is honey, then I also want tea.
Seriously, great idea. Bee hives would add a nice bit of verisimilitude.

I would prefer them to just be environmental like butterflies in OB and don't do damage or count as an enemy. However I like the idea of harvestable hives just because it seems like a cool addition making the world more alive. Having said this I would only like them to add this as a final thing after everything else is finished and refined.

Honey brewing can be interesting part of alchemy and crafting as well as add some native Nordic coloring to live of settlements, similar to Kwama Eggs mines and Breeding Netch in Morrowind and unfinished wine brewing busyness in Oblivion.

yeah, and as mentioned before, Honey is used to make mead, which is a favorite drink of the Nords. seems like a good fit to me.

found this on wikipedia:
Mead features prominently in many Germanic myths and folktales such as Beowulf, as well as in other popular works that draw on these myths. Notable examples include books by Tolkien and Neil Gaiman. It is often featured in books using a historical Germanic setting, such as the Viking era.

Great ideas. If there were beehives, bees, and a honey ingredient I'd be happy; any additional detail would just be a bonus.

Slightly off topic: I'm the only one who wants there to be giant wasp enemies? Yes? All right then.

No.... there is another. acutally he wants giant bees. but very similar nonetheless.

I'm sure he'd be fine with giant wasps too (as would i)
