really.. if you got $6000 to blow on a game, might as well get a top of the line PC, and new TV to hook it up to, and gamepads, and sound system... and you'll probably still be under budget.... :flamethrower:

How long do you think an xbox will hold out for till they announce the next console? half a year?

I doubt they'll announce the new consoles in six months. Micro$oft was hoping to squeeze TEN years out of this generation. They've gotten six. I'd guess new generation consoles won't be available for, at the very least, two more years. Although, if they were released in two years, they could be announced in six months. Again, I'll bet they'll try for about three or four more years.

I got a 360 just for Oblivion, so if you get a 360 just for Skyrim then at least you can have the satisfaction of knowing someone is just as insane.

I haven't seen any elitism in this thread. You console fans seem way more defensive than the PC fans. All the threads here that deal with PC or consoles end up the exact same way. People stating facts and other screaming elitism at them for it. Makes no sense, It's simply a reality of life that the consoles aren't nearly as capable as a good PC. Skyrim on my PC will be better than Skyrim on any console. So if your gonna buy a platform just to play Skyrim shouldn't you buy the best platform you can?

The thread title says it all. Hey is buying something JUST for Skyrim. So buy a PC and have the best Skyrim you can have and also have a PC which you need for school work and a lot of other things any way. OR buy a Video game console to play JUST this one game. The PC is the obvious best choice and with his budget he could build a crazy good machine that will last him for years. He would just be much better off with the PC, unless he got a used console dirt cheap and even then who knows how much life it would have left in it. Buying one of the consoles at full retail price to play only one game would be insane, but buying a PC you can use for your one game and everything else you need would be completely sane and a much better use of his money.

I consider myself fairly neutral as I have a old gaming PC, a 360 and a PS3 and plan to get Skyrim on console then down the road once the mods are actually flushed out and DLC avail get a new gaming pc and get on it.

I don't know many people who would argue that consoles are a better option than $1000 + gaming pcs...

I tried doing that with oblivion, and you can do it. But it's nowhere near as good as on the 360. After all, the game was designed to play with mouse + keyboard. That means that if you move your thumbstick forward, you can only stand still or go at full speed. If you aim, it's pretty much the same problem. And the rumble wont work.

Anyways, the figures everyone is throwing out here aren't really making the PC look good. Remember, buying a 360 now will cost 200 at most (if used especially), so a 1000 dollar pc will already cost 5 times as much. If you just want to play skyrim, buying a console would be more price efficient.

It has been stated that Skyrim will have proper gamepad support, unlike Oblivion.

don't forget you'll get the dlc before the others with the 360. And you'll be able to afford to eat with the money you save.

By the way. I don't think the poster has $6,000 to blow on gaming. He has $6,000 through scholarships or loans for the year. I am going to assume housing is handled and maybe a food plan at the dorm. But it isn't $6,000 woo-hoo get yourself a gaming rig, it is $6,000 spend responsibly. So yes a360 works out fairly well since it wont eat much into your budget. OT, but back in my college days(N64, PS1 came out about 1/2 way in) I waited tables and I got consoles because I could afford them and they were awesome. I initially got the N64 and loved it then, some jack hole of a friend visited with a PS1 and FF7, and then I needed one of those. But given my budget I could not afford a PC. Now even with the budget for a PC I love consoles, they are great gaming machines. But hey I love my PC and its huge steam library of games as well.

Well If its just for one game, I wouldn't say "Build a PC". I myself find using keyboard and mouse to be irritating at times. Plus since you're in school, you might already spend all day at a computer, which can make using a PC less than fun (experience here) If you planned on gaming a lot more, then yea a PC might be good. Unless you're wanting console exclusives more, such as: Uncharted, Gears, Halo, Killzone, etc. (I myself find PS exclusives to be well worth the money even though I play a little of everything)

You know what, i think you should do it. I bought the PS3 for one reason only. To play MGS4. And it was well worth it :) Also, the release of Demon's Souls later made me super happy.

So you know what, buy it (my opinion ofc). Gonna be an amasing game, and you never know what future will bring

I prefer to call it "bad judgement" instead of "insanity".

If you are considering buying a console JUST for Skyrim, it's because you're a really devoted fan of the game. But if you really are a really devoted fan of the game, you're just aiming too low cutting yourself from mods, the Creation Kit and the mod community, which is about the 60% of all the fun you can get with the PC version. Mods are the difference between a game lasting 300 hours and lasting 5 years.

So I think his intention is a bad mistake. But hey, everybody is free to make mistakes in his life.. :)

Another consideration, do you already have a television for gaming? If not, you just might end up having to shell out for an home theater system along with a console and that's way more than any top of the line PC.

Space is also an issue, enough space for a TV you'll be comfortable to be playing on ? Its not recommended to use the xbox kinect in a small room.

Yea, he definitely didn't say he had it to blow. It's just a little extra cash leftover and whoever gave it to him can't take it back so it's going to go straight into his bank account. Assuming it was FAFSA or another scholarship program his books are already paid for, and he either got a meal plan or didn't. It needs to be spent responsibility, but again... cheaper isn't always the more responsible choice, especially when you're talking about out-of-date hardware.

I had almost the same dilema which system to buy the game for (PS3 or XBOX), but luckily or not, my PC died on me, and I had to buy a new one. Since this happened I'm buying a top of the line PC (so I can play Battlefield 3 and other games on max) and for that reason, SKYRIM will be for the PC.

If you have money to spend, go for the PC, it will be more useful (you can do more than just games lol), you have mods and so forth for SKYRIM.

My 2 cents.

P.S: Pardon my english.

PC Elitism/Elitist: It is also known as flaming.
We're not allowed to use the term really devoted fan [AKA, really, really, really devoted fans], yet console users are permitted to continually toss that term around. Boggles the mind as to why.

If you aren't building it yourself I would recommend IBUYPOWER.com, you're going to pay some markup but you will end up with a much better machine than something like DELL or HP can offer.

I'll be around these forums until 5PM central, if you have any questions send me a PM.

I would, if they did the exact same thing as the expensive ones. The game is the same across platforms, unless you want to mod. If he wants to mod, he needs to shell out. If not, go cheaper.

I have a decent pc, but i bought a 360 for just gears of war 2 about a year ago.
You end up getting more games for it anyway.
If you are going console route, have a look at the PS3 + 360 Exclusive games, Might change your mind which you want to buy (if you have any doubts that is)

Though a pc would be prefferable for Skyrim. Due to mods and other reasons.
But no, definitely not insane.

I got full tuition for my university paid for as well as 6,000 extra for "expenses". I want Skyrim so friggin bad that I've been thinking about getting a console just for it. Idk if it's out for xbox 360 or not, if it is, just 100 bucks for one. My PC can run Oblivion in crappy graphics, but I know Skyrim will utterly make my laptop bend down to its knees. Am I crazy for considering getting a console just for Skyrim? Would you do it?

You're in luck friend! Not only is it being released for the 360, but since you have enough funds you can go ahead and get the 250GB HDD models for just a little bit more!

I'd say do it. Games like Skyrim only come along so often, why not thoroughly enjoy it on an Xbox with plenty of memory?

You won't regret it, I guarantee it.

It's not always that simple, college is hectic man. How reliable is his laptop? What are the chances of it being dropped/ having water spilled on it/being struck by lightning or even just giving out on its own?

I just feel like it's especially useful for him to have a backup back at the room... like I said already you can't write your midterm on a 360... I just feel like a PC is the more responsible choice for him.

I personally prefer the 360 experience to the PS3 and PC.

360 is desinged for gaming and its beautifully designed remote fits perfect in your hand for easy gaming. PC mouse and keyboard I find aukward and unatural and PS3 remotes are uncomfortable and clumsy imo... 360 all the way =)

You never played a fighting game on the 360, have you?

I own both a High-end PC, 360 and PS3.

I personally recommend a new gaming rig, but if you want a console, then you should go with a PS3.
PS3 is doing really well this time, and is atm the better console with lots of exclusives. It's also the RPG console atm, with lots of jRPGs coming out on it around this time.
Another bonus PS3 has over 360 is the no-region lock. This is expecialy handy if you live in the EU and want to get a hold on the early US releases.

Personally I'd advise the original poster to go with a PC, but if he does get a 360, a 250gb hard disk would be redundant if all he intended to play was Skyrmi.
