Before Oblivion & Morrowind Was Dagger Fall

Post » Sat Dec 03, 2011 5:30 am

Ok .. so way back in the day , I will never forget playn Dagger Fall, it was like nothing else. It truly changed what it was too play A RPG or Video Games in genral. It we the first time I saw nudity in a Game, It was the first Open-end Game (sand box), it was the first game you could fly & It was also the first time I had too upgrade my comp. As of late I have noticed alot of PC games gettn watered down too feed the Masses (consoles, e.g Dragon Age is A extremely dumbed down verson of BG/NWN )--- Plz , Plz dont do this too us in TESV. [ Levatation , in oblivion was not possable due too consoles limitations on load times "city cells" ). Anyhow too my point, lets bring back some of the old school Ideas.

Darggeer Fall,

their were more Armor types (10x materials) & Peices (slots). Like you had 2 shoulder slots.. one could be Orcish other Dedric .. same for wrist / bracers & braclets ect ect .. (oh yea Dedric use too be red armor btw, was a cooler )
Also their were Cloaks, robes, shirts, pants & Vales ect ect. these could be worn over and under armor.. (witch could be magic as well )
But formost ..CLIMBING, CLIMBING, CLIMBING (& Levatation ) really Change how A game playsout ..Oblivion was A fun game but really was not the game with out Levatation, Morrowind had the Lev .. but their was no climbing or need too (was some mad crazy jummping skill tho)
Banks, Ships and carts (Yes you could own a boat, also your horse could have a Cart .. too hall your loots ) & banks would Loan money and you would have too play it back with in X days.. if you did not the guards would be after you (HAULT, HUALT)

Morrowind,

Now they might of had this in dagger fall .. but I dont rember it - teleporting, you could mark a spot and go back their , also were quest necklesse that would teleport you too they nearest church places ect...
Mass transportation (big bug bus )

this is all I could think of for now .. but anyhow .. feel free too add what you miss .. or troll me .

I was playing Daggerfall today. I played only a little, 10 minutes or so.

More involved combat controls.

Bash open doors and kicks. It was a surprise.

Levers and dungeons that looked like dungeons.

Things I noticed so far.

I've just got into playing Daggerfall in anticipation of Skyrim:

It's hard, I would recommend playing as a custom Spellsword. Even then, I had to cheat.
You'll struggle with the UI, Graphics and secret rules. Customize the mouse controls!
There's levelled loot, but all the best stuff (artifacts) has to be found in a quest.
Don't steal anything, except at night! The Guards are Psychic.
It takes a day to repair items, and you don't get to use it in that time.
You fast travel everywhere, environmental exploration is a endless purgatory.
The Banks (deposits and loands) are great, but taking out a loan should be more difficult. (Gold has weight)
Most of the spells, armor and weapon types are unchanged in Morrowind and Oblivion.
When your caught by guards, you can lie, plead your case or plead guilty.
Quest all have time-limits, with some consequence (Guild reputation goes down).
Dungeons are huge mazes, with hidden doors.

I literally just downloaded and installed daggerfall. It was a huge pain took me an hour of searching and configuring to get it to work, but finally it's working and I'm trying to pick me skills :D

Oh, Daggerfall...what. a. game. Sooo challenging to begin, and most characters struggle through the first few levels. And you can die from more than just being hit by enemies...almost every disease can/will kill you, and if you run out of fatigue in a hostile environment you collapse to the ground and die...ah, good times.

(Use the Windows version, it's easy to install- configure the controls though)

http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/Fichiers/DaggerfallSetup.exe 103 MB

Cheat Mode is much appreciated...Even then I have installed and uninstalled Daggerfall twice now in as many days, I reckon I've finally given up on the game.

Went to do a Knights of The Dragon Quest and the dungeon was full of thieves and spiders that constantly paralyzed me.

I might start again if there's a 'no paralysis advantage'...

ES4 is the best. But ES2 is my next fav and I will always remember it. I'm an old school gamer and I bought this when it came out. It is epic. I played a Khajiit thief. I capped out and finished the game. Think it was 75 but I can't remember. I robbed and killed so much, in Daggerfall I was KOS. Once, when fighting the guards, I just plain got overpowered and went to jail. It was a long stay hehe. Made dinner, cleaned up, called friend and still had to wait like 20 minutes for the timer to count down, I even lost some skill points. I owned a boat and went everywhere I could.

I'm really glad younger people try it out. You have to remember when it came out and how things were then. It's not really fair to compare ES4 and ES2 when they came out nearly 20 years apart. I will always have fond memories of Daggerfall, and I would recommend it to anyone. If your patient, it can be a lot of fun.

I like the banking system (including purchasing ships), the court system, and the reputation system.

I'm 16 years old and tried out Daggerfall for the first time last February. It is the second Elder Scrolls game I've played (with Oblivion being the first) and I like it. The gameworld, although large and relatively repetitive, still impresses me and makes me feel as though I'm playing around in a real place. I can't say I want a return to that with future Elder Scrolls games, but I like it as being a uniquely pre-Morrowind feature.

Just to mess with the title and purpose of this thread, before Daggerfall was Arena. :P I like Arena's inns.
