Beginners tips for OOO

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 11:03 am

Just had my lvl 15 argonian upstart's spleen ruptured by Umbra. Damn, I love OOO (FCOM) - just when you think you can walk about owning everything in sight, you are slapped back in the face and your ego and braggadacio trampled under the shoe of some war-weathered warrior.

I think I put up a good fight, lasted about 5 minutes real time, but buffing up and using poisons etc. did not help. I might try again, but thought I'd ask - what would be a good level to fight with Umbra? And what level is she set to?

And what level is she set to?

Oscuro's Umbra is level 50. She also comes with Fortify Health Abilities (four of them), Fortify Acrobatics, Fortify Fatigue, Restore Fatigue, Restore Health, Resist Fire, Resist Frost, Resist Magic, Resist Normal Weapons, Resist Paralysis, Resist Poisons, Resist Shock and Spell Absorption.

Wow! Just wow...So how does anyone manage to best her?

I am lvl 15, and have some really powerful weapons (ayleid meteoric shock damage, elven two-handed sword, blade of the haunted etc.), but it takes forever to get one of these ancient gargoyles down, even when i have three summons hacking at them alongside me. I encountered two yesterday at haynote cave winding sump, and it was just miserable. Nothing else has given me so much trouble yet (I have yet to open the Oblivion gates, so I guess Balrogs might be worse).

Isn't there an elemental weakness for these creatures, like other creatures in OOO have? They also cannot be "creature commanded" by my spells either!

They are weak to Frost. They're from MMM/FCOM BTW.

Depends on chars as always. Basically, to best her (and other OOO bosses) in melee it's good to have as high AR as possible, e.g. to aim for 85. Also, high Agility. If you have access to AR 85 and high defense against magic (via Resist Magic, Spell Absorption, Reflect Spell) you can http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1078987-oscuros-oblivion-overhaul-spoilers-thread-27/page__view__findpost__p__16325219.

A simple tip is to just adjust your game difficulty to your liking.
I reduced mine to 40% for the early levels. By about lvl 10 things smoothed out and I increased it again.
It might be considered a bit of a cheat/crutch but I found the early levels a tad dull until I changed it.
Now I'm considering increasing it even more, to 60% to make it a little harder.

Does anyone know how to bash chests in OOO as opposed to picking them open?

From the OOO 1.33 readme:

Bashing
You can bash any lock, provided that you meet certain criteria. You must first, with a weapon drawn, activate the container, as you normally would to open or lockpick them. This cannot be done in sneak mode, as this would activate the standard lock‐picking procedure. The drawn weapon may be any kind of melee weapon, i.e. not bows. You can bash with your fists too, although it will not be as effective as bashing with e.g. a two‐handed hammer. When you activate a locked container with a weapon drawn, then the container will begin to glow. This tells you that it is targeted for bashing.

Then, you need to use special attacks (power attacks) on the container until the lock breaks. The formula responsible for the damage calculations takes your Strength, skill, weapon type and lock difficulty into account. Every time you hit the container, a loud noise will be made, which could potentially alert guards or enemies of your nearby presence and mischief. In addition, every time you hit a container your weapons will suffer slight wear. Once you hit the lock enough times, it will break and the container will open for you.

Thanks Arkngt for your tips and responses, and pointing out that the ancient gargoyles are from MMM/FCOM, not OOO (not sure why I thought they were OOO - I think refscope told that to me, but I might be mistaken.

Actually, I am playing at 59% difficulty just because I thought everything was turning easy at lvl 15, and I slowed my level rates down as well. But I don't really want to lower my difficulty, as it is so much fun. I like my character to feel fear every now and then!

Ditto. I'm at lvl18 now and I probably should have raised the bar at about lvl 13 to 15. Enemies are a bit too weak now and combat is getting mundane.
Opposed to the early levels when the difficulty simply kept me from engaging at all.

There are mods that ups the difficulty automatically as the char levels up. Haven't tried them myself as I play on 50% difficulty for several reasons, but it seems like a good idea. One example: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28589.

Thanks for the tip Arkngt.

I haven't played with OOO before though to be able to gauge what my ideal difficulty range should be.
I'm thinking that the difficulty slider is just gonna keep going up now though until I get to 100%.

Part of the problem for me is that I spend alot of time developing my character and doing everything there is to do, so I don't think I'm reaching the higher level zones as early as intended.

I'm using Realistic Leveling (or nGCD) to postpone the inevitable godlikeness. As it "nerfs" the char and you also lose control over multipliers it works well regarding this. Also, I'm using Progress at x5 slower leveling rate, partly for the same reason. But, yes, I tend to lose interest in my chars around lvl 20 because the combat gets too easy overall.

Hey guys, who is selling open very hard locks? I was able to clear one of Ayleid ruins and there is an cheat with very hard lock. I think that there is something good in there.

Do Ayleid coins have some specific purpose or they are just another thing to sell?

Ayleid coins are just for collecting and selling. There's a chance that Edgar's Discount Spells and Mystic Emporium have Open Very Hard scrolls, so check there. In the long run it's of course better to manage it via skills/spells.

Acquired a new decent machine recently and have re-installed Oblivion, going for heavy realism including OOO. The modded game is pretty stable now if you follow the 50 step guide and it looks good on a higher end machine with texture overhauls.

I've gone for a breton spell sword type custom job with blade, destruction and light armor. I've got realistic fatigue and levelling in as well which really pumps up the difficulty and I'm really struggling but like the challenge.

I've tried wearing heavy armor to build endurance and strength a bit in the early stages but pretty much had to ditch it in fights as I just can't go the distance ( or run very far either). I am pretty much getting beat on by everything and anything and hope things improve a bit later (lvl 3 at the moment).

I am relying on the guards killing for me and scavenging mostly.Opponents have to be tackled one by one where possible any more than 2 is very dangerous and I need a summoned scamp for every fight more or less (he is tougher than me!).

From the advice above I am going to focus on my major skills I think until I can hold my own a bit better.
