Your race doesn't matter, it's almost purely cosmetic. The only exceptions are that Nords are resistant to frost and High Elves are immune to paralysis (which rocks!). Other than that, they're all the same.

Spellcasting ability and spell resistance make things much easier for a first time player, since spells in the game can be very devastating. During the character creation you can get yourself an ebony dagger, another great help. Give yourself max increased magery.

Alt+F11 will save your life.
-It will save you from being stuck (unable to move) which might happen for some reason or another-
=Sometimes on stairs the enemy's will find their way underneath your character and you wont be able to move, they can still hit you, but you cant hit them or see them=
=a bad jump into a pit can also get you stuck on an enemy that you cant see or hit, nor can you move again=

It moves your position to the last place you were before you got stuck, like before falling into that pit and being stuck on the monster.

===
I don't use cheats in the cfg yet, but Iv'e read you can use it to be moved to the dungeon entrance as well -or abuse a issue with saving/loading and using it to hit the front of the dungeon.
===

And try not to get frustrated, its a buggy game. I'm still having issues with either quests screwing up (like go to house/ kill monster in house), where the monster might not show up) or access to the house isn't allowed -middle of the day, shops are opened, but the house is locked -dont have Lockpick over 4%, nor can I cast magic-.. quest over *bang head*

New question. Why can't I pick up some treasure? Is it just poor level design?

Also, is hand to hand as weak as it is in other games?

Hand to hand isn't too bad, you've got kicks too. Treasure isn't that hard to pick up, just look at it and click on it. Use the crouch and look down keys for stuff on the ground. If you kill two people right on top of each other, you very well might not be able to get all the stuff.

Ah, that was probably my problem. I didn't know there was a crouch or look down button.

Go into your options (press esc) and try to set your controls to something more comfortable, unless you already like it where it is.
-I set mine to use WASD for movement, and the mouse view mode -where your view follows the mouse, instead of it following the on screen cursor to the sides and then turning.

that way for the most part, all I need to do is naturally look at the item stash on the floor and then click left mouse to activate it (activate center object was defaulted to space bar I think, but it just feels easier to click the left button on my mouse since thats what you do at menu prompts anyways.)

What's the deal with fatigue! Fatigue kills in this game?!

EDIT: Ah...lol. It looks like that was health. They've just switched the colors on me.

Right. It's not 0 fatigue = "a bit winded" like in MW and OB. 0 fatigue = pass out from exhaustion and, if in a dungeon, get eaten.

Or you can just bash the door, just don't let the guards get to you and you'll be fine.

Its that fear of hearing *HALT!* in the distance, I swear!

-I spent 3 days in jail for accidentally hitting the rest key, i was trying to click Loiter for 3 hours, but hit the rest till healed..-
-and 9 days in jail when I lost my focus and tried to steal my arrows instead of buying them- (miss click = 9 days in the slammer)

You can get out of the dungeon by running past and avoiding the trickiest enemies. You'll end up with less loot, but you'll be out, and you can always rob a few graveyards with only rats etc to get some quick money.

The hardest enemies on the main trail out of Privateer's hold, as far as I can remember, are a thief in one of the rooms off the first corridor (you don't have to enter), an archer in the ante-room to the throne-room (he is behind a U of tables, so you can run past him without him being able to get to you) and a skeleton at the top of the throne-room staircase, which is slightly more difficult. If you're quick, you can jump on the throne platform, activate the lift mechanism and leave him on the floor below before he can catch up to you. After that, it's up and round a spiral corridor with a few giant bats, and into a room with an imp - which again, you can run straight past to click on the exit.

You need to know the way out pretty well, though, so run through it and be prepared to get killed a few times before you get it perfect. I have a map of P's Hold in my Daggerfall Chronicles, but I don't know if there's one online.

You get that Privateer's Hold map for free with the Daggerfall game too. As a appetiser of what to get if you buy Chronicles (which I also have ^_^)

I managed to get out. skipping baddies, resting, and saving every two seconds helped. I know the way out mostly now. Now I'm worried I'm going to lose interest. I want to get involved in some questlines but I'm not really sure how. I don't even know how to start the main questline and finding out at random could take my entire life. And, crazy as it may sound, are commoners actually sometimes WRONG? (lol everyone in oblivion is omniscient) I asked about guilds and went to the city they said and couldn't find it.

And how do you start the thieve's guild?! How do you get a lockpick? How do you BUY?

There's so much I don't know. Moving backwards is so much harder than forwards. I'm slowly getting the hang of it though.

oh yeah, and...I miss the console!! It's always been there to shape the game/character to my needs.

The thieves guild will come to you if you do enough thievery involved acts (like pickpocket 10 people, or steal from some shop 10 or so times)

You dont buy lockpicks, you just attempt to open a locked door by using the locked door -or you can bash a door with your weapon or fists- =I think lockpick was really poorly done back in this game, if its low, it will stay low! its really hard to get up=

You buy stuff in shops by using the shelves infront of the merchant -each shelf is a separate inventory, so check them all-
==============

I dont normally talk to the commoners about out of town issues, but for the most part, if you find a person who can tell you what direction the shop or place is in, eventually with enough badgering you can get them to put the name on your town map.
-orange = shops
-green = taverns
-blue = guilds/temples and the like

when you enter a shop its name is also placed on your map, or you can use (info) mode F3 I think?. F1-4 changes your interaction mode.. you can use the door in info mode to get the shop name and time its open or closed.
==========

The main quest line will start off with a letter in the coming days of just starting the game and being out of the privateers hold. -youll get a message and have a little piece of paper in your inventory -its got a green border, indicating its quest involved-. you just read the letter and follow the instructions

I do remember that you actually CAN activate an Invulnerability Mode, but it requires 4diting with game files. Feel free to check it out on the Web.

Thats why they make it so you can get an Ebony Dagger during character creation. It lets you cut through the dungeon pretty quick even if you only have short blade as a minor skill. You can avoid the skeleton at the top of the stairs by going under the stairs, the archer gets caught on the table, the orc stays back in his room, ect. The first dungeon is only dangerous if you wander off the path to the door. (hehe)

I want to get involved in some questlines but I'm not really sure how. I don't even know how to start the main questline and finding out at random could take my entire life. If you want to start the main quest, wait for a letter and do what it tells you. Until you get it, do questwork to earn some dough, buy a cart! and start improving your reputation with whatever groups you wish to associate with. It is generally good in the game if the nobles find you useful.

The commoners can be wrong, people can lie to you about directions, and the person you're looking for might be in different locations than what you were told by the questgiver. If your info comes out wrong, ask someone else. Also you can press them to mark your map if they don't have a negative response.

If you have the cheatmode enabled, CTRL-F4 enables invulnerable. I point this out only because that information is very easy to find (see the read-me .doc that comes with the patch). I do not recommend using it. :grad:

If I'm wrong, contradiction is in order.

That there is a god mode in DF is absolutely astonishing to me. I've never seen it mentioned.
