Being able to seamlessly melee attack from holding a gun...

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 4:28 am

I just started back playing Fallout 3 like everyone else on this forum XD, and I found something very annoying from it. If I was in the middle of a fight and I ran out of ammunition I had to open my pipboy and equip a melee weapon or unequip my weapon to bring my fist out, or use hotkeys to achieve this.

The point is, that I had to "Equip" my fist or a melee weapon. This feels very convoluted and immersion breaking... I think there should be a mechanic similar to "The Last of Us" game by Naughty Dog where I can attack people with my fist or melee weapon seamlessly by pressing a button instead of "equipping it.

This might be a minor thing but if it is not in Fallout 4 now I would like to see it added at some point.

Thoughts?

We already have lots of hints that there is a melee attack with your gun mechanic, similar to other fps.

It's been shown you can do a melee strike against your opponents with your gun.

As for what you're asking for: You'd still need to unequip/holster your ranged weapon and draw your melee weapon/ready your fists. The Pip-Boy is a little intrusive/clunky, but you can also just hotkey or use a potential favorite menu similar to Skyrim.

Actually I think its more of a "grapple" attack, NPC's can do it also.

I suspect ya talking about the pistol whip clip, I think thats a kill animation, Skyrim style. Otherwise its gonna be,standard attacks, otherwise the info text for bayonets don't make sense.

That raider had HP remaining (maybe their was more to it who knows) plus we've seen the player push away a mutated... mosquito?

I always had multiple weapons quick slotted and ready to switch to. No pip boy access needed unless I wanted to equip new armor or checking ammo and stim packs.

Don't know about fast-switching from gun to a melee weapon - even with hotkeys, there ought to be a holster/draw animation that pans it out. But pistol-whipping and gun-melee is confirmed.

That makes me think they're using paired animations for more than just kill-cams in combat this time around. If they're fluid, then this is a welcome improvement.

Quick slots is a fine work around but it still doesnt take away the fact that you have to "Equip" the melee weapon or your fist. What I'm saying is that there should be some sort of button that you can press in the heat of battle when your gun clicks instead of bang so that you can melee attack the enemy.

I'm thinking it should be a slot system similar to the witcher. Where you can put a weapon in that slot and that will be the one used when you press the button.

IS there a source? Because a scripted killmove is not what I'm talking about... I like a realtime way of getting something off my [censored](not sure if we can curse here) XD.

Most straight forward proof, says the bayonet increases melee damage, which means there must be a gun related melee attack to begin with.

"Grapple", implies tackling or grabbing an enemy, not knocking them back but since we are lacking the details of this kind of melee attack we don't know what it's called or it's effects but I do hope there are perks to modify this 'new' feature and there will be a wide variety of "weapon melee" available.

Now the OPs suggestion that you can hit a button an pull out a Super Sledge and wack someone and then be back to holding your AK47 at the ready without weapon changes is just silly and not something I would support at all.

I DO agree that going into the Pip-Boy for any reason during combat is jolting from a game player point of view, so the idea of a "favorites" kind of option like in Skyrim would be a welcome option (tho I seriously don't recall EVER using Favorites while playing Skyrim other than when it was required).

I dont get it, how is that any different from what we have done in the past?

But in any case, that was not my suggestion. My suggestion was to somehow melee an enemy if we run out of ammo, like a gun butt/pistol whip or throwing a punch while holding a weapon. Pulling out a super sledge is like attacking someone with an entirely different weapon...

My suggestion is based off of improvising to survive...

Looks like that's already in. You can see bayonets in the weapon mod menu on the E3 Footage, and during the Atom Bomb Baby montage you can see the Sole Survivor whacking up a raider with his pistol.

Personally I can't wait to see it in motion, especially the bayonets. Its not confirmed exactly how it works, I guess it'll just be a dedicated melee button on PC, but I hope going stabby stabby with my rifle is as smooth in game as it is in my imagination.

Is this really being argued like this? Haven't we seen enough to make an educated guess that we will get a melee button? The two different bayonets point to a YES. It's not a hard concept ie most any fps game has had it for a long time. I was actually surprised it wasn't in 3/nv. This and a throwable button seem all but confirmed.

Funny thing is that I've seen games that allow you to put a bayonet on a weapon and increases stats to your melee attacks but doesnt have a "bayonet stab" animation to go with it...

So no, we havent seen enough, and when it comes to video games there are no "educated guesses"... Thats like saying "we are playing as a human being so the educated guess is that they can only carry a couple of items at a time", but in actuality we can carry as much as a stat(carry weight) says we can.

Except in such games you can more then one weapon equipped, we seen clear signs you can still only have one weapon equipped at a time, so again, it can only mean meleeing with our guns.

I hope you are right, but the fact of the matter is that this has not been shown... In fact we've barely seen anything but the E3 presentation...

This may seem like a petty thing to you especially with it being included by so many "other" games. But thats just it, those are other games and even the smallest of features wont be magically put into every game...

This is a concern that is worth mentioning...

Except its not a concern, because it in, we also have folks at Quakecon reporting it, the common sense proof is right a front of your face.

Yeah I'm seeing some kinda common sense disconnect. If a traditiionally non melee weapon has a melee boosting stat with the attachment of a.... wait for it....... melee weapon, it's not hard to fathom that we can then..... melee

and if a bayonette provides a +1 or whatever, it could then be inferred that without it, the regular melee attack is base which makes sense as it would be a rifle butt to the head or whatever which causes less damage than a bayonette
