I'm being attacked by an idiot, WHY?

Post » Sat Feb 05, 2011 8:05 pm

it would just mean when i murder them it would be in cold blood. would be nice to have unique dialoge option depending on how badass you were, " oh look another one of you many highwaymen".

There should be more commentes comming from NPC while fighting. The comments should variate to how much health he/she has left, race and agression. It should also be a lot of comments, because it would be awesome and realistic. They should defenately make some space for those comments, whiping out some rumors or something.

I think they should only ignore you if you have specific fame from killing highway men. They live on the outskirts of society. They don't know anything of your fame from helping people. If you kill lots of them then word should get around that community that you aren't someone to be messed with. They should have their own faction.

Of course, there should still be the groups of two or more (and the lone crazed one) that think they can take you out and make a name for themselves.

Stupid people attack people they shouldn't everyday, even in real life.

It's a pretty cool idea, but I want the chances of that happening to be kept low. I certainly don't want to see bandits running away all the time when I hit high level with big fame score. Perhaps I'd like to see about 10~20% of them - depends on their lv and your fame score - run, but frankly I'm looking for an excuse to kill. :flamethrower:
Creatures, I want them away once I clearly overpower them.

Well it's definitely not the technology that's keeping stuff like this from being implemented. Some mods for Oblivion did just that.

Wouldn't it get a bit boring if everyone kept running away from you? It is a game after all. The bandits are there to be killed not chased all over the countryside.

Yes to sense of self-preservation, for npcs and creatures.

I adressed this in my thread on realistic eco systems, and it's very true. A lone wolf shouldn't attack me just like that, neither should a bear or a rat (well, maybe a rat). Only if I threaten them or their cubs, or if they're in packs and outnumber me.

Well, if they realised that they didn't want to attack you, they might just not attack you - you would be walking around and there would be a pair of armed men hanging around the side of the road, not attacking you, maybe even showing off some new idle character animations/conversations.
For the characters who realise they're about to get their asses handed to them, if they're that close to death, they should limp (like in Fallout 3) and should be easy to track down. My favourite thing about being an expert archer was picking people off in one shot - that should be the end of the battle, picking off the half dead bandit limping/crawling away.

@ Swedish berzerker:
At the same time, it's still a video game and rats, bears and wolves are there to be attacked. Realism only needs to go so far. If it were realistic you probably would see about three wolves or bears during the entire game. This doesn't need to be Cabella's Hunt IMO. We still need some mindless battles from time to time. Still, I like finding the wolf packs in Nehrim. hopefully Skyrim can respawn a wolf a few times to make it seem like a pack.

I personally would like to see, rather than attacking determined simply by a stat comparison, attacking determined by probability. As my character's stat is more beyond that of the bandit, I would like there to be an increased probability that he'll leave me alone and a smaller chance he may even run away (or some other form of showing fear). However, I'd always like there be retained some chance of being attacked - many criminals don't have the most impeccable common sense and you never know what a lunatic may attempt.

I like this idea and could see it working in a number of ways.
Maybe they just stand there ground, maybe they just pickpocket you (A disadvantage for firstperson players such as myself), maybe they challange you or attack you, maybe they run for the hills.
It all depends on a number of huge factors.

If they could do these random events as well as red dead did. Then I am a happy camper. From an rpg standpoint it may not be feasible not all the time at least.

Perhaps we need to be attacked by bands of bandits instead of just one waiting beside a bridge. Hopefully this will be the case in Skyrim. It would also be cool to have Dark Brotherhood assassins occasionally trying to take you out, a bit like the Talon compamy merc' s in Fallout. :ninja:

I'm not sure exactly how I would implement this.

I am. Tie it to Fame and Infamy. If you're a nobody, it means zero effort to own you. If your fame/infamy is 20 - 40, someone told me the other day about a dude that looks like this and this and it's generally a good idea to be careful if you see someone like that. 40-60 - OK, that dude's on everyone's lips at the taverns all week long. Get on his bad side and forget you ever had an ass. 60-80 - Freakin' hell, are you sure you heard he's moving to that town close to us!? We'd better high-tail somehere else! 80-100 - Wait, isn't that?... RUN FOR COLD CLIMATES!!!

I recall an unfinished mod called B.R.A.I.N.S for Oblivion that was trying to do this very thing and I personally would love to see this in Skyrim.

I like the idea of ambushes at higher levels - after all, killing the hero of Skyrim would have its' bragging rights in some circles, so it makes sense that some NPCs/bandits would try twice as hard to do you in when you least expect it. :ninja:

While such a thing sounds nice in theory, I can see one problem. You get to a point where you're high level and have the best items and guess what? No one wants to fight you! Sounds like it'd get kind of boring to me. Then there's the problem with NPCs running away when their health gets low. Sure, it makes sense. I gotta say, though, it doesn't sound like much fun to spend my time chasing down countless enemies just so I can finish them off and loot their corpses.

I agree. Enemies in FO:NV would run away at low health then I would have to shoot them in the back.

Some enemies just need to have some kind of "Last Stand" built into their AI. They know that their chance of survival is slim, so rather then flee they basically kamikaze you, trying to bring you down with them or at least throw you off your game with a sudden rush of attacks.

or shoot them in the leg to proceed watching them try to walk away as you draw a bigger/smaller gun to finish them.

however op- a charecter with amazing equipment does not make an amazing charecter. bandits would forgo the high risk for the higher reward (especialy in groups)

Yes to sense of self-preservation, for npcs and creatures. And for the love of Azura, the comments and swearing they do during combat should be concordant to their health bar. It's ridiculous to hear "I'll crush you like a worm" or something like that when the enemy is 1 millimeter away from death.

I find combat taunts in general to be pretty weird. If you're an archer teaming up with a few people against sine powerful guy, the last thing you want is for him to focus on you or know where you are.

No kidding, I'd always kite enemies to guards on my archer character if they were nearby and even though The guard was chasing them with a sword they still went after me even though I jumped onto the roof of a house and stopped attacking entirely. What idiots.

It does get annoying when everything I see tries to kill me when they are obviously going to lose, but I agree that it would be annoying for everyone to run away from me. Maybe implement a Morrowind-like cloak-over-armor system so that if you're looking for a fight, you can just throw a dirty cloak over your high level equipment.
