Being Robbed

Should NPCs be able to rob and pickpocket your character or your character's home? What is the extent, and can you get your stuff back?

That would be awesome, and one of my pet peeves in Oblivion would be gone. The player can't be the only thief in entire Tamriel!

As long as they can't break into your home. That would make your home being more essential as a place safe from thieves

Maybe this is where Traps can come into play. Setting traps around the house, ready to eliminate any intruders. :flamethrower:

As long as they could not steal essential items I think it's a great idea, especially if you could exact revenge.

NPC steal from other NPCs in oblivion. Of course, this results in their death since they can't pay a fine, only refuse.

The less expensive your house is the easier it should be to break into. That said, it would be nifty if (after being robbed) a mini quest would activate (ala clues, evidence left behind etc.) that would allow you to track down the thief and get your stuff back/revenge...

I think it would really make the game-world seem alive. You come back from completing a long quest only to find your most awesomenest of awesome skeleton pwning hammers stolen. You'd actually want to get it back and complete such a quest (unlike the ones that feel more like chores).

Immersion ftw!

I really hope the NPC can't pickpocket the player... because when you have the rarest sword in the game then you have to be worried about selling some herbs to the nearest shop...

Of course they are hoe many time have you seen a thieve guild menber rob anything. They look smell and act moe like the comon house deputee in the parliament than thieves. Never saw a real thieve guild dign of the name in TES.

If I'm to be robbed, I want the opportunity to stop it there and then. I don't want to get home and discover I've lost something of great value. However if I was pickpocketed, I could chase down the crook and retrieve my stolen items. However this should not be overdone - if I'm getting pickpocketed every day, it would get old. It should be a fairly rare occurance, and not happen in areas well patrolled by guards, so if one wanted to avoid areas where crime is rife they could.

Sure they can try and steal my stuff while I'm gone................as long as I can own four or five guard dogs , and that way I wouldn't even have to feed them!

Yes to all three. Why not link it to arttibutes / skills / levels? In Oblivion if you had a high strength, people would comment on it. Perhaps if you're a high enough level, or a certain attribute is good enough, the thief would pass you by and look for an easier target. The pick-pocket you meet in the Imperial City springs to mind - "I'm a pick pocket, but you don't have to worry about me. You look far too formidable for me to bother with" - something like that anyway.

I like this. ^ That would really add to the effect of different cities (for example the waterfront district/bravil)

Perhaps there should be a dice roll before you enter your house every time (level, cost of house, certain skills, how long you've been gone, how many guards) and if the number's right, you'll walk in on a band of thieves.

Yes to NPCs pick pocketing you, but only if there is a good system for detecting it. Something that makes it simple to spot but not overly easy.

Oh what a terrible idea. NPC's breaking into your house. I'd love all my precious loot and swords that I cave crawled for hours to get to suddenly disappear into the hands of some pale sissy who doesn't even have a house.

I wouldn't mind them pickpocketing - provided I can actually get the items back.

"No" on the two first options.
Things like that should only occur if it's quest related (you catch a thief or a pickpocket and that leads you to a quest etc.), and if someone steals from you as a part of a quest, you should be able to find the stolen item without too much hassle.
NPCs pickpocketing you or stealing from your house without you noticing would be extremely annoying.

"Yes" on the last one. NPC thieves should steal from other NPCs, it would add to the experience. Maybe you could catch thieves and receive rewards etc.
