Benny, the Chip, and the Tops

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 6:05 pm

Is there any way, short of taking on all the Chairmen in the Tops, of getting the Platinum Chip before Benny high-tails it out to Caesar's Palace?

Note: I know fighting everybody isn't that hard. I'm just looking for other options.

He should have offered for you to wait for him at his room

You can (I believe it is a speech check) to tell him to go with you and have an 1 on 1

I repaid my debt as soon as I could by queuing up 2 bullets for his head in VATS. He only took 1 :/

[Edit]

But I did walk around with his suit after :) It is a nice suit.

Ah! Thanks guys.

How about a way that doesn't involve killing Benny at all? That's what I'm really looking for :)

I believe you can lure him to your room then, through dialogue, settle your differences

Well I think you can once you start the dialogue with him, you actually can work with him to control the strip, but as naive as I was, I decided to forgive him and go our own ways. Once the conversation ended I second guessed my decision and was going to shoot him in the back of the head, but he disappeared and his henchmen came in with guns blazing! He cannot be trusted!

Aha, I tried forgiving him also, which ended in blood. I think actually if you agree to work with him, he also sends his guys after you, just to be tidy. (I'm sure he thinks he doesn't need a partner.) I can't quite remember, though; I'll try that again.

Confirmed. No matter what you say to him in that private meeting, it boils down to two choices: kill him or let him walk out, and if he walks out he sends in his men to kill you. There's no way to make a lasting deal with him.

Spoiler
You must retrieve the Platinum chip from Benny and bring it back to Mr. House. The easiest way to do this is by telling Benny's number two(Swank at the front desk) about his planned rebellion-3 speech checks will needed to be passed to get full exp. from swank, the last one being 45-, then going up to Benny's suite, exploring it, informing the number two of the plan, and then going back up to the suite, murdering Benny, and taking the Chip from him. Also, you can convince Benny to remove his guards and meet you in the suite. Go to the safe, pick the average lock, and take Benny out with the weapons inside.

After talking to Swank, and receiving your weapons back, killing Benny should reap a positive Karma bonus and no retaliation from the remaining gamblers and bodyguards in Vegas. Doing so also completes the quest Ring-A-Ding-Ding.

Another way of getting the chip is to talk to Benny at the Tops and meet him in the Presidential Suite. You can talk to him and either agree to help him take over Vegas or you can leave dialog and kill him. Loot his body for the Platinum chip. If you keep the combat inside the suite, and were able to convince Benny to come to the room without his guards, then there should be no further commotion. Next, return to Mr. House with the chip and watch his demonstration. It is likely that you will never return to the basemant that House sends you to, so take the opportunity to loot everything in the area before leaving.

If you have the Black Widow Perk, you can seduce Benny and get into his suite without any trouble. You can choose to attack him as soon as you get into his suite, or you can have six with him and then kill him in his sleep after doing the deed.

Thanks Marine :) nice summary there.

Sadly still boils down to those same two options: kill Benny or let him escape. The "agree to help him take over Vegas" mentioned is a lie, or at least not a resolution. Once you 'join' him, he leaves the room, escapes, and sends assassins after you. There's absolutely no way to talk him out of that Chip.

I've heard something along the lines of if Benny escapes first of all from Tops you will find him been taken hostage or something by the Great Khans. I don't know what happens to Benny when you find him though.

I am not sure if this was mentioned but, I will post it anyways in hopes to help. If you let Benny take you to the presidential suite for a 1 on 1 he just runs away and leaves you to play with assasins. This causes a detour in the quest and you get to find him at Fortification Hill instead. It's not fun. In order to keep him from running you kill him at the tops. You will need to pass two speech checks and you will need the engraved lighter. The lighter can be found on Jessup if memory serves right in the Boulder City ruins or whatever. From here you talk to the person at the desk (I forget his name) and you tell him about Benny. If you pass the lighter check and not the speech checks he will give you your guns to shoot Benny up in the Casino. Pass all checks he lures Benny to his room where you can shoot him. Either way you get Maria.

I am afraid I don't remember the dialogue to get up to that point though.

Thanks again Marine. I have seen what happens when Benny escapes (and I recommend it on your next playthrough; it's interesting!). gamenut6870 has it right.

And thanks gamenut6870, but I'm not trying to get Maria. I was looking for a way to get the Platinum Chip without resorting to violence. The only way to get it at the Tops is by using violence, so the only nonviolent response is to let Benny escape the Tops. If Benny escapes the Tops, you can catch up with him later, but again, that ends in violence no matter what you do.

Well, he was the one who put a bullet in your head, no reason for a peacefull solution in that case. Even if you forgive him, why should Benny change his opinion and not just try it again?

I really thought they'd give us the option of using non-lethals on Benny, then grabbing the chip. Sadly this didn't work.
