Best Antivirus Software for Gaming PC?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:10 pm

Protecting the PC from garbage...what a headache for all of us. I have no idea which antivirus software is best for a gaming PC so it gives major protection without interfering with gameplay. It should be able to be set for auto-updating and handle whatever is thrown at the PC...full-spectrum protection. Any suggestions? What do you have the best luck with?

Thank you for any help. :)

Microsoft Security Essentials, I run it on all of my PCs now. Works perfectly, and very good detection rate. (Some false positives, but still very worth it....and free too.)

NOD32 has never let me down, though it isn't free and I can't really say how it compares to others.

Never even had any false positives, it is easy to forget that it is there sitting in the background protecting the computer.

I don't bother, common sense beats an AV any day. However I don't use that OS for anything but games and a small amount of internet browsing.

I to don't use real time AV software. 8ish years, not 1 virus to speak of across 5 different systems. As mentioned, the best virus protection is the grey matter between ones ears from what I gather with my experience to date. Not to say it wont ever happen, but I don't concern myself too much about it if it does. (I have a system image I can go back to quick and easy.)

Yup, the most unnoticeable anti-virus i've ever had. And my system hasn't been infected yet, despite visitng some slightly :whistling: sites (not extremely :whistling:, mind you :P).

Not to thread jack but:

I'm currently using AVG (Free), would Microsoft Security Essentials be worth upgrading for?

I will also point out that it is incredibly weird seeing people recommend Microsoft software.

As everyone has recommended, Microsoft Security essentials. If you don't trust us, look around the web-- it's highly recommended and doesn't really drain on your PC.

Heheh, it works no matter who made it! I used AVG until MSE came out but was fed up with AVG giving me false warnings and update problems so I switched - best move I have made. :)

I misspoke, would MSE be better than Avast? Earlier I had switched from AVG to Avast because of various issues I had with it too.

I don't use anti-virus software. I do not allow my primary gaming rig to be on the Internet, and if I get a virus on this computer I would simply re-install Windows. (I back up important stuff to a USB external drive).
Not 100% fool proof and it doesn't add much to the suggestions but that's how I deal with it.

Also for those wondering how many resources are used by MSE, its only about 87MB (which compared to some other AVs out there is pretty good) http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq102/Starforce9/MSE.jpg It rarely goes above 100MB total.

I would reccommend NOD32 it is what I have used for years now and not had any issues. I use Comodo's firewall as well but that is slightly heavier I would say but then again its not as heavy as most other firewall products and still offers a ton of flexibility.

Same here and it updates at least three times a day which is great.

That's WAY more than avast is taking up for me.

Like seriously more than double the RAM usage.

I put Microsoft Security Essentials on a PC I built for my sister from leftover upgrade parts and it wouldn't update the definitions without manually running Windows Update for it (it was not in the "critical" updates section that would install automatically). I may have been missing something obvious that would set it for an automatic definitions update, but I looked high and low. After an infection (thanks to the old definitions) I installed Avast! Free Edition and it works like a charm. She has a couple games on it (WoW and LotRO) and they run fine with just an Athlon X2 5200+, HD 4670 and 2 GB of RAM. Must not be too heavy on resources.

Haven't used any AV software for the last 2 years, no problems yet. I don't screw around too much on the internet nor download many files.

I haven't used one for my PC in at least five or six years. I don't do file sharing or visit questionable sites. I'm pretty savvy with spotting suspicious email and don't participate in forwarding "cute" or funny emails with attachments so many friends and relatives do. I haven't had an infection in all that time. I just use Spybot about once a week and about once a month I do an online virus scan with Trend Micro's Housecall. Works for me.

I would use Avira Premium or Avast free before I used MSE. They have better detection rates, much faster scans and use up less memory.
