Best character build for Daedric Quests - A question of ethi

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 2:54 pm

Like many others out there I want to get myself the Oblivion Walker achievement, at some point, for collecting Daedric Artifacts collected from completing quests for each of the Daedric Princes. The trouble is that generally performing the tasks required for some of those quests usually kind of goes against the logical ethics of my character...

For example, if I'm playing as a Hero Nord Warrior, and member of The Companions, doing favours for Daedric entities seems a bit... off. Likewise in many ways for a pure Mage.

So I think I'm going to have to create a dedicated character to do those quests with. Somebody who would actually have no problem doing exactly as each Daedric Prince commanded.

The question is... lore wise, what Race would be a best fit for such a character? Or play style?

Also the gifts given from doing these quests are designed to suit a range of characters. Not every prize will really be suitable for say a thief, or Warrior, or a Mage...

Can anybody think of a 'best fit' character? :)

The Dunmer fit best. They are the only race out there that actually worship more then one Daedra and could logically worship all without going against their parents/education. Orcs are also natural Daedra worshippers, but they tend to stick with Malacath.

I should also state that because of this the Dunmer are also the race least likely to go against a Daedric prince

But all races have some Daedra worshippers in them, hell Manker Cameron was an Altmer/Bosmer, I can't remember and most of the quests involve non Dunmer as their greatest servants

Camoran was Altmer.
But I'd say Dunmer really. They got the longest tradition of Daedra worship as far as I know.

Some quests like Azura you can do with a pretty clear conscience. Others like the nightmare quest you can do (but not getting the artifact). Others I'm not touching.

It messes with my concept of being the hero.

Plus, the fact is you can pretty much make better magic items than the game gives you anyway in general, so I'm not really going to miss having the mace of Molag baal (can't remember the spelling) or anything. I do like the Azura star though. I did "cleanse" it.

It's really up to you. Any race or character archetype can have non-flexible or flexible ethics or morals. Mine doesn't but pick what you want in terms of race and archetype and do what you think is fun.

I have a Dunmer who did all of them, except for Peryite and Haermous Mora.
I didn't care to.

My Nord though, he only did those two simply for the reward and the fact that none of them was clearly bad.

I'm thinking Dunmer is probably the best fit really.

The question I guess is what playing style to adopt. I'm considering dual wielding one-handed weapons, and building up on sneak. That way I could take my Daedra worshipper down the Dark Brotherhood route, too. One-handed would allow me to use some of the swords and daggers which are awarded.

It depends, any favorite prince? Because all of them have different favorite styles? Bhoethiah is probably the most flexible as she enjoys everything that can kill other people but Malacath would "hate" somebody that sneaks. So playstyle isn't relevant, it just depends on what you like to do.

It's not about the race or build, it's about morality. Most Daedra want to just move you around like a chess piece. Do you want to be moved around? Do you just care about the reward? Or is the thought of being manipulated by an uncaring otherworldly spirit abhorrent to you?

Any race is capable of making the deal with the proverbial devil, it all depends on your character.

Dunmer is probably the best bet. Doesn't matter if you're the "good guy" type.

There are at least three daedric quests which are clearly evil and one is just plain vile.

Still, most of them are pretty neutral, and princes like Azura and Meridia are classed as good daedra.

Maybe a Kajit? All they seem to care about are the "riches" that the land of Skyrim can offer them. They seem to have little in the way of moral, religious or political affiliations, and only seek to make their fortune.

Might be a good fit for all the various Daedric quests out there.

According to history Altmer are the most likely to use and abuse the promise of supernatural power (take f.e. the Ayleids, Mankar Camoran and his father, Mannimarco). While Dunmer have worshipped Daedra in the past, they did so humbly and relied on their own strength to fight the Dwemer (in no source is it ever mentioned that they Conjured Deadra in the battles of the commonwealth of Resdayn).

So yeah, the best choice for a Daedra walker is Altmer, and here is the build I often think is best attributed to one:
One-Handed
Heavy Armor
Destruction
Conjuration
Illusion
Alchemy

I apply this logic with my Nord warrior, who is a good hearted fella:

Most Daedric quests involve killing some illoyal worshipper, or worshipper of a different daedra, and the grand prize is a daedric artifact of destruction. In my logic, killing any daedra worshipper is a good deed, regardless of the request/command coming from a daedra, and obtaining that daedric artifact makes sure it doesn't end up in the hands of someone who would use it for evil. So I play along in the various daedras little mind games, letting them think I'm a pawn in their game, and then BAM! I gotz your Razor Mr. Mehrunes, and gezz what? I ain't gonna be using it to wreak havoc on Tamriel, I'm gonna use it to slice sausage for lunch! Joke's on you, prince!

It wouldnt neccesarily have to be an 'evil' character, just someone who is only out for his own best interests and wants to gather power and make powerful friends.
Someone like Mannimarco, who plotted and schemed a long time and eventually became a god.
Though of course many people consider Mannimarco to be evil.

What race and background is up to you, though if you go with the whole 'get power until im a god or seriously godlike' I suppose some magic might be appropriate.
Conjuration as that deals with summoning things from Oblivion.
Id say a Dunmer Telvanni style character or an Altmer necromancer, though there are of course many more characters possible.

I tend to think that I really don't have a choice, like when I started hearing Molag Bal (first time interacting with a Daedra). I thought like: "geez, better do as he says or else he'll enslave my soul and feed me my heart, or some kind of that stuff". I feel very powerless when they interact with me and so I usually do as they say.

That being said, I believe that race factor doesn't mean much.

A Daedric Archaeologist obviously. I'm thinking High Elf. Inspector Gadget meets Gerald Ford.

I'd go for an assassin build, without any morals or standards. It's the way I play, and I like it a lot, as long as you don't mind killing some innocent people every now and then. Most assassins aren't the nicest guys, which fits with most Daedric princes. Sneak / Light Armour / One-Handed / Archery is what I roll with, and it has suited me very well on my nasty endeavours.

The daedra are a diverse bunch so there is no one shoe that fits all.

Take Meridia and Namira who are poles apart. One is a spirit of light and life energies who loathes the undead, while the other revels in disgusting and vile things.

Keep in mind, there's a difference between doing a favor for a Daedra and worshiping one. And at least one of the artifacts requires you to NOT do what the Daedra asks you do to in order to get it.

And one of the others, you don't even know you're dealing with a Daedra until you're done anyway.

My Primary is doing the daedric (at least the very evil ones) and the DB requests as a vampire. That's his excuse. Once he's done with them he will get cured and be his normal not so evil self again.
