best companion mod?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 10:15 am

I'm interested in getting a companion mod for my new fcom game, and was curious what others thought was a good mod. The only one i've tried so far is Ruined-Tail's Tale, but something about it rubs me the wrong way. What do you other people use?

I'm haven't really played any companion mods myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about Ruined-Tail's Tale. You can http://knol.google.com/k/toql-companion-quest-mods# for a few other popular companion quests.

There's also non-quest ones like Vilja, and such.

I liked Nessa from "The Lady said NO!" because she was much more realistic and tactical than any of the other companions. (the mods not available anymore though)

I'm wondering the same as you. I've used companions previously but the problems I've encountered are really bad (like AI overload) or making the game too easy and my PC never levelling.
However, having recently installed FCOM I think I need a (non-overpowered) companion, for a few levels at least.
I've just d'loaded http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977 from Nexus and she's 3 levels below you, but I've a feeling she's gonna do lots of dying!
Alternatively, Emma, the author of Vilja, recommends http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8256 which Vilja is based off

There *is* a comparably (for companions) long questline included in the Vilja mod. The reason she isn't on the list that MCC84 linked to, is that this list is old, outdated, and only include companions more than 2 years old. (Would love to see that list updated with newer companions)

There are two versions of Vilja - one where she is essential and one where she is non-essential. If you use the version where she is essential, she will obviously not die at all.
Her health is set to match the players, btw, so compared to for instance Neeshka (who has the standard npc health setup, which is quite a bit lower) Vilja should do very well.

On a side-note:
making the game too easy and my PC never levelling.

This I find the worst problem with using companions. That's why I included "Do not fight at all"-option with Vilja. Very handy if you don't want her to disturb your levelling.

Companions do not make the FCOM or OOO-overhauled game too easy. There are other mods to use in conjunction with it to make the game harder as well. I only use one companion, Viconia, unless completing the RTT quest line. Before that, I only use Sonia. I want to try Vilja this summer, but Viconia is not moving out of this LO.

Based on what i've seen, the Vilja one is up my ally. I'm gonna give it a whirl. I'm really interested in the Viconia mod, but i'm not a fan of world cross-over/cross pollination. Thanks for all the tips!

As an update, the Vilja mod is freaking awesome! I LOVE her accent, as Nords are SUPPOSED to be a Scandinavian-ish culture, and she is so vocal and actually useful! She reminds me a bit of the Julan mod from Morrowind. I dont' think i'll ever play without her now!

If you know of a mod that belongs on the site, add it on! Let everyone else know. I know devakm had been away for a while, I don't know if anybody else can approve changes to the knol, but it will definitely never be updated if nobody sends any updates in!

I also must endorse the lovely Emma's Vilja. She's awesome- filled with charm and very true-to-life.

I hear great things about Viconia, but I've never used her, because hearing my own voice in-game makes me self-conscious. But I know people seem to really like her.

 Thanks.

I should clarify that I am not the voice of chapter one- I am her "chapter two" voice, and once I have my new mic, I will be revoicing chapter one, if Sulteric is still interested.

That's enough OT from me. *scurries*

I'm so glad to hear you enjoy her! :). Heh, I voice-acted her myself, I'm amazed that people seem to enjoy her accent! In fact, I was a bit scared to release her in case people would hate her crappy english.

She might have similarities with Julan, but she's probably more similar to Constance (by me and Grumpy) or Morgana from my Witchgirl Adventure mod for Morrowind.

Ah great! :) By then, ver 2 should be ready, with an additional questline, a bonus-companion, and with some features I believe will be completely new for Oblivion companions. We are playtesting the new functions now, but I still have a few quest-steps to add that will need further testing.

I've interpreted it as a list of mods playtested by Dev rather than a space where others can add their own mods?

Aww... thank you GreenWarden :). We cross-posted, so I didn't see your post when I was originally making my reply. :)

And I figured out that the Viconia I tried out wasn't the one with your voice  . I tried to use the ver 2, but it appears to be dependant on a huge esm-file for the Underdark area, and with a laptop with limited harddrive space, I haven't dared to use up disk-space for it yet. But I will, because I would find it so enjoyable to hear us chatting ingame ;).

I didn't really mean actual dying, just unconscious, sorry. I installed the essential version and can't wait to give it a whirl.

I've used loads of companion mods over the years in Oblivion and my favourite was an archer girl who let me do most of the fighting. FCOM is brutal at these lower levels so I want a little help for a bit. This is why I think Vilja will be perfect for me. Sweden really has become the Sm?rg?sbord or culture recently. Best http://www.robyn.com/#, http://www.stieglarsson.com/ and RPG companion mod creators :P

FCOM no, OOO it did for me, so I got rid. Plus Viconia and http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1019238-npcs-freezing-unless-10ft-away/page__st__20

Based on my long time investigations on tesnexus and forums messages I would say:
- Neeshka
- Vilja
are the most reliable.

Personnally I haven't used anyone of them because I don't like using "popular" companions, my companions should be unique like the story of my character (which change after every gameplay)! That's why I favorize Companion Share and Recruit for more experienced player that have some use with the construction set and Tes4edit. Also I mention the interesting mod Companion Master.

Anybody can edit any page, to make corrections or add new content. There is a button at the top right to edit the page. I think it is set up so that it will have to be approved before anybody else will see it, but it was meant to be worked on by the community.

These companions are "new" to my game, so I could care less whether or not other people are using them.

Edit: I prefer the story to be at least partially written instead of creating the entire thing myself. I love reading books and fanfics, would not dream of writing one, but I understand how you feel as well. I do not get the whole do not use it because it is "popular" thing, but I know many people who opt to do that for different things.

There are several excellent companions out there who do more than just furnish aid in battle. I'd suggest doing a search on companions up on TES Nexus, as well as looking at the http://knol.google.com/k/toql-companion-quest-mods#. There are in addition several mods, such as Heart of the Dead, Saphiria's Romance, and The Vampire Hunter, where highly interactive companions are part of something much larger.

Well, still playing with Vilja, and she's an absolute charmer! I find myself talking to her in real life. It's especially funny when i'm trying to be sneaky in a deep dark cave, and she's telling me, loudly, that she loves strawberries. I find myself going "wth? shut up, i'm stalking here!" But she's so cute and charming that I can't be mad!
