Best companion?

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 11:33 pm

Who is the best companion? I have tried lydia, The Db initiate and currently use.. oh.. i forgot her name..
Spoiler
the azura woman! (mistake, should have done the quest the other way)
I was thinking of picking someone up from the college (i can get the unspellable khajit or unremembered dark elf. I assume the other guy's quest will allow me to use him too)

Anyway- who is the best person to get? I dislike complainers!

Spoiler
Cicero.

He may be annoying, but he's a fiend with that knife of his, never friendly fires you (unlike certain spellcasting companions, cough cough), and comes equipped with some of the best enchantments you'll find in the game. He's also the best sneak companion, and we all know how annoying companions can be when you're trying to sneak.

I did too on my first character because I didn't know. :sadvaultboy:

Edit without quote because stupid 60 second post limit @geckoman: Can't post spoilers on the general forums without hiding them. At least, I think it's a rule, but I just do it out of courtesy for those who might not have gotten that far in the Dark Brotherhood questline.

I am actually really liking that they have different personalities, so I haven't settled on one for either of my characters yet.

Lydia is annoying, but she has been my archer's constant companion for 85 hours so it's hard to let go.

My mage has had Faengal who was dull in a very Elvish kind of way. She's currently running around with Vorstag and I have been very happy with him. I even like his well-timed comments (I have yet to have his comments bug out, unlike Lydia who goes inside a dungeon, clears it out, walks outside and then says "oh look, a cave, maybe we should check it out"). I am thinking I will at least try out J'Zargo and maybe Eola with this character.

I like Sven. I know he's a newbie companion. I just picked him up when I was starting my new character, fully intending to ditch him, but now we're BFFs. The comments he makes while fighting are hilarious. Also, he doesn't constantly get caught while we're sneaking around for the DB or the Thieves' Guild, which happens to most of the other companions. He isn't the strongest, but I'm overpowered enough as it is.

Kharjo was my favorite. He kept dying in battle, though, and it made me feel horrible. I ended up giving him a few thousand gold and a set of ebony armor and letting him go on his way.

I haven't found one that was more of a help than a hindrance. They always shove me and get in my way.

Jenassa. The dunmer merc from the Whiterun bow shop.

She uses light armor, and dual wield. She's also VERY chatty. I dunno if this is specific to the dunmer followers but she tells you alot of useful stuff when you are inside dungeons, at times making you feel she's a real person. One time we were in a falmer dungeon and she said "don't go too far ahead". I was like WOW!

The other followers don't say a peep unless you open up the conversation window, and act like maniquins except the ocasional "I smell trouble" and "Wow, look at that".

Once again, I don't know if the devs put more work into dunmer voiced followers or it's just specific to this one.

I've only had Aela as a companion and she seems decent enough. She gets knocked down quite a bit and I have a somewhat difficult time sneaking with her around (my sneak is high enough now that they spot her but not me usually) but she does a decent amount of damage to enemies, often distracting them and she isn't annoying in the slightest.

Maybe this is an okay place to ask this question but if I "let her go" from being my companion will she keep all the gear and stuff I've given her i.e. not sell, drop or lose it? I would like to try out others like Mjoll the Lioness or J'Zargo but I gave Aela all legendary gear and if I want her back I don't want to have to rearm her if she's going to get rid of all that gear.

I had a question. A follower's stats are based on your level at the time you walk into the area they belong to. That's probably why my follower (Janessa) is constantly getting killed.

If I were to join the Dark Brotherhood and get one of their followers at say... level 10, get him killed at level 25, would a new one come into the Dark Brotherhood to replace him? If so, would his stats be set to level 10 or to level 25?

Oh, an additional question.

I walked into the Dark Brotherhood at level 15, but the only thing I did there was train my alchemy and then I split. I haven't even started that quest line yet. When I finally get followers there, will they be level 15 or will they be the level I'm at when I get them to be created?

I think the DB ones are invincible. If you are on a PC there is a way to level up your follower, which I do every 5 levels or so. You dismiss them from service, open up the console, click on them, type "disable" and then "enable" again, then invite them back into your service. Their stats should update to your current level. If you're not on a PC I don't think there's a solution, unfortunately.

If my companion is Cicero, can I send him into a room and he'll stealth kill folks? Does he set off floor traps?

I'm not on a PC. I'm on a console (PS3).

By invincible you mean they simply won't take damage of any kind ever?

From what I've seen Lydia and one other thane ones I tested now level correctly with the character since 1.2 but Sven is stuck at level 20, might want to test potential recruits first via the console!

Edit: OK PS3, so you cant :(
