Best Companion F:NV

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 6:42 pm

Hmm you could be right, I did say depends. In this case depending on how much experience and what you tried.. I had little of either it seems.
How did she handle with your LOS? given the location I'd have thought a less hostile medium sized character could have sufficed for those 7 seconds.
Then it also depends on your build.

That was something I considered before going in. I was debating Lily vs. Veronica and Rex vs. ED-E because while I wanted a tank, I didn't want a companion that would charge in at full speed and alert every deathclaw in the cave. I decided on Lily because I ABSOLUTELY needed a companion I could hide behind (think I set her to passive to try and prevent her from being too aggresive) and ED-E because if she did charge in ahead, I'd prefer to at least know how many are around the corner before I go in after her.

It ended up being a wise decision because at the very last room with the Legendary Deathclaw, while she DID end up alerting it and two other deathclaws, she was capable of tanking all three for a decent length of time. I think I finally healed her around the middle of my second Turbo dose (so 23 seconds in in a slow-mo fight?) I just Turbo'ed and started firing at the deathclaws like crazy as she and the Legendary Deathclaw fought in slow motion, her sword and his claws swinging dramatically like some gladiator movie. The thing is, Lily gets staggered much less and her reach is very good, and she also pushes her target back some with each swipe. Veronica on the other hand would get staggered more, CANNOT compete with the Legendary Deathclaw's reach and even if she did have pushback it would work against her. I'm pretty sure that if I'd picked Veronica, she would've died and I would've had to kite the Legendary Deathclaw back.

Judging from the Wiki, Lily can get 1700 health, if I'm understanding it correctly, though I know for a fact it's at least 1300. Veronica (probably the second best tank companion you can get), if I remember correct, only gets ~400.

Yes that health makes her perfect for that role then. I tend to favour blitz more than anything in FO games, tricks in areas if possible ( FO series entire not just 3 and NV in case this is raised by somone.)
Last run there I took Vicky and ended up using plasma grenades + unarmed to deal with the LD area, however difficulty level is also another variation so extra health and a large tank could make things simpler.
I'll give Lily a try doing that at some point, thanks for the ideas.

Also, Boone has a strength of 7 or 6 I believe; not enough to use the Bozar at optimal performance, and yes, it does matter. His accuracy will be horrible. I once gave him an AMR and noticed he was missing a lot more than I remember him missing. When I switched it out for the Gobi Sniper (a weapon he had strength for) suddenly the misses disappeared.

His STR is 7. Give him a suit of T51b, and your accuracy problem won't be one.
Works also for the AMR, and any other Gun Powder weapon with a STR requirement of 8.

I always thought she was bad, but in what way is she good in combat?

She's got Shotgun Surgeon(-10DT) and Hand of Vengeance(+15% DAM). Just give her the Dinner Bell with Slugs...

It's with an exploit, but a stupidly easy one. You can complete her mission so you can get both of her perks, Calm Heart(+50 HP) and Hand of Vengeance(+15% damage with Guns). I gave her the Medicine Stick and assaulted Quarry Junction with her. I have never cleared it so quickly.

I wouldn't even call that an exploit. If you finish the quest peacefully, all Silver Rush personnel will attack you on sight.
That includes the lousy crier on the main street towards the Strip, who can only be avoided if you are not entering through the main door from the Mormon fort section..
Killing him usually triggers some appropriate dialogue from Cass, as if all of that was more or less intentional from the game Designers.

As always depends, plus depends on depending on mods.
Honestly in runs Vicky is great, especially in modded games with DT tweaks and PA.
Cass + shotgun = very good.
Boone good.
Arcade EW's if you're playing them he can drain your ammo, if not playing them then you're forking out for less common ammo.
Lilly late game, big creature, big target, not really much to her.
Rex he's Toto this is the yellow brick road, I'd take him just because.
ED-E well since the bugs are gone / almost? great early, late, middle companion / mobile haulage trailer.

Wow has it been that long, well done on the posting.

I got something bugging me, everyone here keeps on saying that your companion will eat up ammo yada yada yada. In my game they NEVER use my ammo. I literally just tried it again to see if they do, I gave Veronica a 9mm SMG and 120 ammo. I went into battle having her used the "ranged" option. When I checked after the battle she still had evey last bullet. Is this a glitch or what, I even took away ALL her ammo and loe and behold... She's still sprayn.
Even when I throw her some *special ammo she still will not use it(same thing happened with Raul)
Is it like this for anyone else.

How do you trigger Arcades' personal quest? I know it's something to do with the remnants, but I can't figure out how to activate it.
Any tips would be much appreciated, thanks.

You have to gain his trust AND you have to be far enough into the main quest (you start it sorta late game, I wanna say, for example, when you start "The House always Wins part 5" if you're a House supporter). In the same way Boone will trust you more if you complete certain NCR missions in a way he likes, Arcade will trust you more if you run certain quests together and you act accordingly to how he'd prefer OR say something he likes in response to a comment he made. Alternatively, Arcade believes in an Independent New Vegas and will ALWAYS offer his personal quest if you support Indy Vegas.

There are several options. One is siding with Yes Man, and disposing of House, once Yes Man is installed on Houses network, Arcade should initiate a conversation.
There are more, but that's the way I'm doing it usually.

Hmm maybe a glitch, as I have only started up again.
Did she actually equip the 9mm? not to cause offense but sometimes a weapon will not switch past default depending on stats.
Plus the AI unless suddenly improved to the point where they don't decide to do exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time often Vicky tends to go *Oh lets switch to this chunk of metal strapped to my fist instead.*

Is she stayed to the 9mm, it was equiped and fired it Ammo should have gone from past experience.

Edit: Oops sorry for hacking your post up.

Roni uses my ammo just fine. I gave her T-51b and a modded Plasma Caster, along with 300 rounds of Optimized MFC. She's down to 196 last I checked. Need to restock her soon, but I hate giving up my Holorifle ammo. If I could find more ECPs, I'd switch her to Gatling Laser. :(

I use a mod for infinite companion ammo, so it's never a problem for me. Have you downloaded such a mod and forgotten about it?

Yea, I'm positive she's using the weapon I gave her, and she's most certainly using ammo. This must just be a bug, it's not like their uncommon... lol.
It's not like it's a bad thing, I just wanted to know if it was only me.

Oh and thanks for the help w/ arcade... The yes man idea worked just fine.

I hate ED-E's sensor perk. Its range is too much. It really cuts the game difficulty by at least half when you know where everything is.

I call it an exploit because I doubt the designers would have purposely given us the ability to get both of her perks.

I'm not sure that this is what the Wiki says. What it says that Lily can reach 0.75 of player level which is 37.5 if you have all the DLCs, and she gets level x 24 hitpoints, which caps at 900 or so. Which is still roughly twice of what a human companion gets.

This, however, is balanced out by the fact that Lily's natural DT is 15 and she cannot wear any armor, whereas Veronica can be given up to 36DT with Remnants Power Armor and helmet.

Raul is my favourite and is pretty damn good with pistols, but gameplay-wise Boone is the best.

ED-E>Rex, but Rex is cute <3

Cass. I love that Whiskey swilling foul-mouthed trail girl.

I usually give her a trail carbine or This machine and she destroys. One time me and her took out like 5+ Cazadores without any of them even getting close to us.

What made it even more perfect was the first time I ever met her in the Mojave outpost "Lets ride into the Sunset together" was playing on the Radio. It was like a match made in Post-Apocalyptic cowboy heaven.

But I prefer ED-E over Rex, just because Rex often eats about 1000 bullets before finally getting into range of the enemy. And I always give ED-E the Followers upgrade so his(?) damage is pretty damn good.

Boone and Arcade are the two most useful though, but Boones "..." response to everything and Arcades constant whining about something or another gets old.

What I've gathered from the followers of New Vegas:
1. Rex: A good tank, give him Lupa's brain if you are playing on hardcoe, Rey's if you are not playing on hardcoe.
2. Cass: I just tried her out with both perks. (After what Lobotomite said, I decided to give her a try.) Give her a medicine stick, and she wrecks just about any enemy that gets close to you. Her perk is pretty mediocre, although alcohol has some nice bonuses in-game so I guess it's okay.
3: Raul: Old Vaquero makes him more well rounded, as a very fast shot with lever-actions and revolvers, as well as constantly repairing your weapons. With full maintenance, he is the finger of god, and repairs your gear like nuts. He has some awesome comments, as well as a cool back-story.
4. Boone: It's pretty easy to get attached to him and his story, and he is a good companion all-around. Although I think he becomes fairly weak on Very-hard, so I tend not to use him anymore after finishing his quest.
5. Lily: Good for sneak build, tell her to use a melee weapon and she makes a hell of a tank. Her ranged weapon is nice, too, though.
6. Veronica: The "walking workbench" aspect is quite nice and convenient, as well as her ability to do tons of unarmed damage. Give her a superheated saturnite fist, and she is unstoppable.
7. Arcade: I honestly think he is useless for my playstyle, although I guess he is decent for people who tend to use chems and medicine more often.
8. ED-E: I get attached to his story more than just about any fallout character, and with the Follower's upgrades he makes for a good ranged helper, as well as the spotter perk he gives out.

I tend to use Raul/ED-E or Cass/ED-E nowadays.

My favorites are Boone/ ED-E, Veronica/ ED-E and Cass/ ED-E.

Boone is the silent but deadly type. Veronica is hilarious and deadly, Cass is funny also when she's drunk and ED-E is just a total badass.

Veronica and ED-E all the way!!!!! :D Even when I joined the Legion I was still able to have her as a follower. WHOO!

But I do like Cass as well. The only bad thing is that her quests are too short and uninteresting. It's cool that she's the daughter of Cass in FO2 which made me smile like a Cheshire cat...

I kitted out Arcade with Elijah's Advanced LAER, and, safe to say, he p00ned with it.

I was looking down the scope of Bozar to take some enemies out at range, and when the combat really started all I saw were lazer beams shooting over my head, at each target. They were all dead in a matter of seconds.

I completed Raul's quest too, which is nice. He seems to have a hell of a lot more dialogue than many of the other companions, but doesn't annoy you in the look-at-me-I'm-Veronica-get-me-a-dress kinda' way.
