Laser or Plasma? One or two handed? Close range or long? Heavy or light?

Overall I'd say Holorifle.

Optimizing your AP, go with the AER14-Prototype (this might best suit you with it's x2 crit multiplicator)

If you prefer other weapons and didn't choose any energy weapons perks, take the Compliance Regulator (it's handy even if you use primarily EWs, but I wanted to underline this).

Pew Pew has a 2.5 crit modifier. It takes 35 AP in VATS though.

But I guess you'll carry more than 1 weapon anyway.

Take Holorifle, AER14, Compliance Regulator and Pew Pew. Now you're suited for anything to come.

I think that the holorifle, the Q35 and Pew-Pew will do the job, along with a superheated saturnite fist *just in case*

The Q35 has powerful crits, I'd still go with the AER and leave heavy damage to the holorifle. But do as you please :).

Perks:
2-retention
4-comprehension
6-vigilant recycler
8-???
10-finesse
12-plasma spaz
14-chemist
16-better criticals
18-jury rigging
20-???
22-voracious reader
24-laser commander

Okay, so the perks? What would you fill this in with? Bear 馃惢 in mind that I'll mainly be using criticals in vats to kill my foze. So, do I go with something like, Commander, Action Boy, or Rad Child, Atomic!?

Oh, so you play a 13x100 courier? Is this the same build that utilizes Logan's Loophole?

Math Wrath complements your build nicely. If you use Laser Commander and Plasma Spaz (remember, you'll never profit from both perks at the same time - that's why I like to specialize) be reminded that the Holorifle profits from neither.

Rad Child + Atomic is overkill. Make your own Turbo (gomorrah sells enough) and leave Implant GRX be. Take some VATS perks instead. Commando only works for rifles, so Pew Pew isn't affected.

I have a habit of not taking any perk/not using any weapon that doesn't suit my style 100%.

Sprtel-Wood 9700 - even though it has a terrible critical multiplier (x0.04) the fact that Light Touch, Laser Commander and Set Lasers For Fun are added after the multiplication means it can have a 19% critical chance. It has 20 attacks per second, with around 4 sporting a nice crit, meaning that you're going to do a hell of a lot of damage.

Maybe not as good in VATS due to the burst fire, but still pretty nice. It also has such low enough spread that some people use it for sniping.

pew pew or the unique laser rifle from vault 22 AER14 both very good crit and very very good weapons.

if you want scary crit, add 'light touch' in there at level 8

20: grim reaper's sprint...................... 'nuff said

Not at all, I'll probably ignore medicine, sneak, melee, explosives and guns for the most part, and not put too much into my speech, Lockpick or repair (comprehension and magazines should have me covered for these). Energy weapons and science will be my main focus early on. I'm thinking:
Barter 50
EW 75
Explosives 40
Guns 20
Lockpick 55
Melee 20
Medicine 45
Repair 50
Science 70
Sneak 40
Speech 40
Survival 40
Unarmed 55

That'd be something to aim for, before I start putting any others up high. I'm not entirely sure what level I'd expect to be before getting these, but until I do, I won't be put any excessively high.

Thinking mad bomber at level 8, simply because I love scavenging junk with the promise of creating something useful from it (I'll normally have 50+ scrap metal before I reach Vegas) and maybe something VATS-related at level 20.

Rad child just feels like cheating.

I'd rather take Action Boy than GRS, a permanent +15 seems more useful than a conditional +20.

its all about timing to make use of the condition, I usually take both ap perks and sprint, especially for melee unarmed guys, double damage in vats is awesome fun!!

So much this. Sprtel-Wood 9700 is actually designed for crits by once you get it properly optimized, then watch everyone around you melt and explode into dust and ashes as you laugh in your own insane little seat of power.
