Best Graphics on VGA's site, why isn't Skyrim an option?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:39 am

Have you actually looked at some of the textures?

Is that suppose to be an insult? If so yes I have, and they're amazing. You all prolly have bad graphics cause you have crappy computers with bad graphic cards.

no your blind Crysis came a year afterwards and blew that game and every game out of the water up to Witcher 2, Crysis 2 (DX11 patch) and BF3.

Oh Crysis, I really have to point out that the graphical improvements Mods for that game are like cocaine and meth mixed together for the brain.

At this point I think the OP is just trolling but I shall feed it anyway.
I made this in about an hour in UDK yesterday and it already has better graphics quality than skyrim

Yeah...No...Good graphics there. But i'm very glad to say...Skyrim still beats that. The lighting affects in Skyrim are still so much better. I'm sorry please continue to try and convince me.

You guys serious? Skyrims graphics are awesome. The water is especially well done. I will concede that the shadows are horrible and there is low res textures but on the whole I think it should at least be a contender. The character models are amazing as well

Ugh....

You just pointed out the flaws and then it should be a contender to games that don't have the flaws?

Might as well just have a popularity contest.

There is a difference bewteen the Graphics and the Aesthetics.

There was a Video of it done by Extra Credits, but I can't find it at the moment since in my Slowpoke-edness they seem to have left the Escapist without my knowing...

Lets put it in that way:

Skyrim has amazing graphics... IT DOES... I can prove you that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CykHe2E4-BQ
The particle effects is just amazing. (clouds, smoke, etc)
another nice timelapse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0jQs9CJ5vo

But there are other games that has better graphics.

Do not forget: Skyrim is open-world. It's big... And it was made so it could fit in one disc... So they compressed audio... And made some low-res textures...

I think that Bethesda does a great job with their textures and shadows, the only problem is I cant get Skyrim to run long enough to enjoy the awsome scapes!!

Who cares about the graphics category this year? I lost all faith in Spike when I saw Skyrim wasn't in their best soundtrack category.

Implying it takes balls to say anything on the internet.

Anyways Rage is going to win, but who even watches the VGAs. Most people just watch the highlight videos online the day/week after.

As a graphic artist/game designer in the industry Skyrim looks good but is nowhere close to a nominee.

Skyrim sells a nice outdoor open fantasy world as a whole at a competent level. The mountains, the trees, and entire scene looks good but if you look close at anything it begins to fall apart. There are just too many loose ends for it to be considered a graphical masterpiece or candidate for best graphics.

Various random texture scale issues. Example: A finely detailed bowl sitting on a table with moderate texture detail with sort of visible wood grain, resting on top of a stone floor with no detail.
Lots of low poly rocks. They look great at a distance but show the low detail upon closer inspection.
Hair on characters doesn't stand up to other games. Where are the eye lashes? Skyrim can't even keep up with Oblivion mods let alone other AAA games. Take a look at the feet on the female model sometime. The nose of the females has these big square pixels due to improper mapping of the UV's, etc.
Some of the art style doesn't match. Mammoths and giants look to be designed with this curly fur with a specific artistic style and then other animals lack this style and appear more like generic art.
A lot of choices made for performance causes the art to suffer. It's stuff for the greater good of being able to catch butterflies and see ants on a log, or pluck ingredients, have dynamic weather, etc.... if your doing all that some sacrifices have to be made in the texture sizes used.

Overall Skyrim looks great for what it's doing but if you look at the nominee's their screenshots are at a whole different level. But the games probably have less content so artists are able to spend more time with each piece. Not interested in playing them though. Best overall game of the year should be Skyrim but then again as a hardcoe TES fan I'm partial. I'm happy it looks a lot better than Oblivion.

making it true 1080p on ultra on PC still does not make Skyrim rank in the top 5 best looking titles to date..

The graphics are decent, and in that list Skyrim will still not win due to Rage.

That's due to an amazing compression system and low resolution textures but true nonetheless.

Actually it's due to all the low rez textures, simple shadows and 2D items/objects/vegetation. No way this is going to get any graphics awards. Go check out a Snowberry Bush or a Juniper Tree -- welcome back to 1995.

Some of the game looks great, a lot of it looks terrible.

BF3 isn't even among the nominees, how can you expect Skyrim to be there?

And Rage and LA Noire? What the hell
I appreciate how Rage looks nice from a distance while standing still, but that's it

From a technical point of view Skyrim is a few years behind but the art style and the attention to detail are nothing short of amazing.
