Best head replacers?

Post » Fri Sep 24, 2010 12:12 pm

I installed Better Heads. While these are superior to the original textures, and while some are almost photographic in realism, it is obvious that Better Heads represents a range of abilities.

I've come across a few sets of head textures that are nothing short of amazing: Just Face It and Just Face It 2 are fantastic. But I think they only replace some of the female characters. I don't imagine anyone has done the entire game with that sort of quality.

I guess what I'd like to know is if there is a better group of alternatives to Better Heads. Or, can I just install these other replacers after having installed Better Heads?

And has anyone ever done anything for all the hair in the game? I have lots of pretty people running around with bad cartoon hair!!!

Well, I like Visages of Vvardenfell Vol. 1, but if you haven't seen the http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=994490&hl= that would probably be a good place to start.

Me too (Vvardenfell Visages), I got it a long time ago and haven't switched to anything else since.

One thing that confuses me is how much overlap there is with the various packs: You find some of the same faces in different downloads. If only someone could pick out the very best and put them all together...again...as was done with Better Heads.

I've been loyal to Better Heads since it came out years ago. Only head replacer for NPC's that I need.

I suggest you to use either that one (if you want a "generic" NPC head replacer), OR another that gives each NPC an unique face (don't remember the name of any, sorry).

For your char's head, Wesly's Master Headpack is the one I use.

Why don't you do that?
I use BH as a foundation, and then edited in some of http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6173 and http://lovkullen.net/Emma/faces.htm faces to add variety.
It takes awhile, but it was actually a fun project to give the my NPCs new faces based on how I thought of them.

I always tout http://www.elricm.com/nuke/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownloaddetails&lid=1073, which looks great added on top of other head packs. Here are some http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Portfolios.Detail&id=10658.

I use Vvardenfell Visages, but I'm not really satisfied with it. It makes most NPCs look too beautiful... <_<

Sometimes the choice is already made for you. If you decide to use the mod MCA 6.1, then you need better heads and then on top of that Westlys Better Heads (according to the readme if I read it correctly). I plan to add MCA 6.1 this weekend so I will be adding Westlys too. I also use the Balmora & Emmas head replacers then I use Testools object merge. If I don't like rhe result in the object merge, then I make custom changes to the esp to get the result I want - but the Testool object merge does create random heads and hairs so I don't normally need to change anything with esps.

I use All New Faces Compilation as a stock replacer. The heads are great but the hairs leave a little to be desired. I'm thinking of finding another package and using just the hairs.

I also use Vvardenfell Visages as a base replacer then add in Westlys and Emmas and othersI use them to change individual NPCs to suit how I think they should look. Most of the replacers such as Westlys also let you to choose the hair to go with the face.

I just use Better Heads as a base - it's the only one that's fairly faithful to the originals without turning everybody into a photograph. They go seamlessly with Emma's heads, too.

Localized replacers are nice too, like Emma's head replacers.

and while some are almost photographic in realism

No way. For some reason no one's released new head meshes for a while and everyone is still going around retexturing these really low-poly heads from years ago that are similar to the bethesda ones in detail. If you mean "the texture looks like a photo" That's because most of them used to be just that. Don't get me wrong, working from photos can yield very good results but the "photorealistic" ones I'm sure you're talking about use far too much of the photo, with painted on lips nose specularity smiles and other expressions. They look good with a screenshot, especially a frontal, but in game the mannequin-with-a-celeb-photo-tapped-round effect can be quite bad, and the lack of normal mapping doesn't help. I personally prefer the good, less "photorealistic" ones personally. Some people also find bumping into the same celebrity everywhere quite irksome, though I wouldn't mind if it's well done.
