Best navies in Tamriel?

Post » Sat Aug 17, 2013 7:02 am

Put up your top 4 navies and tell me why you think they're worthy of being in your top 4.

For me it goes:

Aldemeri navy (best quality ships in large numbers, highly trained crews)
Imperial (lots of ships, decent quality, lots of experience)
Hammerfell (only because of cannons, however united I think they'd come second due to experienced crews including former pirates and Imperial sailors)

Your list is mine as well, oddly enough. I would just add in Nords there.

I see, why would you add the Nords out of curiosity? Also, you are yet again the first one to reply. :D

Nothing suggests that the Imperial navy is really as good as people are making it out to be. Even with the Forebears at their side it still took them a dragon to defeat the Crowns at Hunding Bay and the Imperials were pretty much losing to the Aldmeri Dominion in both land and naval conflict until Numidium stepped in.

I would also add the Breton navy (especially Daggerfall) as one of the best too based on their success against some of the Akaviri, the Camoran usurper and Sentinel in the War of Betony

While the Nords are great sailors themselves we have not really seen their navy in notable action since the return.

I can't remember where exactly I read it, but Nords are supposedly one of the best sailors in Tamriel. That's enough of a reason for me to be on my list.

I imagine they also have to navigate through the Sea of Ghosts.

Being a great sailor doesn't mean you're a great naval power. Nords, on an individual level, might be known for their sailing prowess due to their sailing in some of the roughest waters (presumably) known to Mer and Man kind (and beasts). If you can sail a ship in the Sea of Ghosts, I would presume you can sail practically anywhere. I look at where those waters are on the map, and think about our own world here on Earth and the roughest oceans known to man are around the arctic circle. Imagine being on those waters with the boats and naval technology we use today, and then think about in a tiny, flat, caravel style ship that the Nords use.

The Altmer navy has been the most powerful fleet since the dissolution of the Ra'Gada fleet.

When the ancestors of the Redguards came from doomed Yokuda it seems they were similar to fleeing people from Atlantis story-wise, in that they possessed more advanced magic and technology than Tamriel had seen to that day.

The Altmer fleet is very good because they have been dealing with Maomer raids since the Merethic Era at least and built excellent sea defences out of neccessity.

It is up for debate who currently has the second and third and so on best fleet, but I think we can rule out the Argonians. Despite their amphibic nature I know of no lore describing marine prowess.

The Bosmer would also be at a disadvantage because the Green Pact would mean all timber to build ships would have to be imported.

I think the largest navy is the Imperial navy , they also have the largest trading fleet with the east empire company all over Tamriel

Now the strongest navy , you guys say it's the Aldmeri navy which is probably the case , but they still needed the Imperial navy to defeat the Pyandonean armada didn't they ? :/

That was a long time before the 4th era though , so the Imperial navy is probably weaker now

1. Altmer- like an island nation, they also were able to get to land on Hammerfell and Cyrodiil with ease in the Great War.

2. Imperials- never said the imperials wouldn't by able to rebuild. With the resources they got they'd be able to recover ships at a steady rate.

3. Redguards- I don't think they bring much to the table but they have enough to defend their borders.

Worst. Dunmer- Dunmer weren't meant to ride on ships.

Nords are like the guerrilla warfare of the navy world but hardly competitors on major sea battles. Their ships are obviously based on Norse longships which means they can travel both heavy sea travel and also in shallow water such as up rivers but it doesn't make them on par with a warship.

The Imperials have a large fleet of ocean worthy warships as do the Altmer. Of the two the Imperials have the better land forces (among the ranks would be warrior blood from Skyrim and mages blood from High Rock) and as seen in the recent the Altmer have the better navy.

As for the Bosmer then my bets is they aren't really interested for sea travel but they host an amazing fleet of little canoes made from the finest animal hides & bones supplied from their carnivorous diet. I expect they use the canoes for catching fish along rivers. I expect the Aldmeri Dominion would employ Bosmer & Khajiit archers aboard their warships. Khajiit are good land fighters but as one of the in-game book says, they use guerrilla warfare tactics.

I've also read this brilliant fan piece once where the Bosmer were able to utilise gigantic seed pods that functioned like boats.

I doubt the slug-people have the Physical Strength and speed to properly man a warship..

I say the Maormer. as they are "Sea Elves".

not to mention the Maormer have tamed monstrous Sea Serpents.. imagine how deadly that could be in naval warfare..

They simply use piranha tactics while in the water.

I'd say Altmer and Imperial.

That entirely depends. The big galleys have distinct disadvantages in battles without artillery. They would be next to useless in northern waters, as medieval fleets in fact found out. Bottom line, naval warfare existed long before those three-tier monsters you see in "Master and Commander," and the smaller ships ancient armies used were still warships.

The Great War doesn't mention anything about Altmer dominating at sea. The neutral account tells me that naval warfare was not a factor.
