I've found the older ones (but not to old just 2 updates back) are working the best for me and other games (like TF2 and BF3).
But you know you have to try different ones to see how they work... Beta, latest, etc.

I use the beta drivers here http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-290.36-beta-driver.html
and change your virtual memory to 5500mb here is a vid on how to do it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LySAqVRvkGU
this has the biggest boost I have seen for the game.

I am using
Amd 64 5200+ 2.7gh
2gb ddr
Geforce gts 250 512mb

and I ran run it on ultra with all seetings on high but I dont use AA or AF and its silky smotth even in markarth.

I'm using the best driver. It's the new beta, 290.36. This driver enables Ambient Occlusion.
That's alright by me — I use the Quality setting and it hardly slows my fps at all.

Yeah, I am using the latest BETA driver and I used the latest OFFICIAL driver also. Which one are you using?

Sigh...

Of the 3 Drivers I have tried...266.666 , 285.79 , and now the 290.36 ALL had a 15 hour straight session.!!

The 266 driver I was using for over a year , Mostly Oblivion. Great modified Driver. (XTremeG)

Last weekend I tried out the 285.79 (XtreamG) As good on the Visual as the previous modded Driver. This also worked with AO . (seamed a little blury)?

This weekend I tried out the new Driver. 290.36 Had to use the Nvidia version. (XtremeG does not have this yet). The latest Driver does have the Best look and seamed really stable. yesterday I had a 15 hour session on that Driver. Ran cool , Looked good. For now, think I will leave this Driver in -place. The new Driver has a setting for AO with Skyrim , but I found it to look bad in comparison to the AO I have been using (Nvidia Inspector) "Oblivion compatibility".

TO the OP the Video card your using is down the list so to Say...http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:System_Requirements This puts it in the Medium cat.

A better list to see in reality where the card came out at.....http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+555M

285.79 works best for me. Better than the last Beta release.

Imho you can with those specs, he's not using AA or AF.

I use older drivers 266.58 for my GTS 450 1GB Overclock Edition.
My CPU is a Intel E8400 3.0 ghz and 2GB ram
Win XP Pro 32bit

The only mods I use is ENB against the 2-7 second freezes and an enhanced noise filter from skyrim-nexus.

I think it's very important to run a clean system, I have all useless services disabled and nothing's running in the background that's not absolutely needed.
Also defragging your HDD on regular basis and good settings regarding virtual memory, windows behaviour etc. are very important.

I run Ultra (non 1.2) with AA thrue the Nvidia console and it runs smooth.
I'm amazed sometimes when I look at my friend's pc's about how many stuff they run in the background, then they wonder why their games run so poorly.

Actualy besides the allready mentioned bugs in this game (and that's a lot, like broken quests etc. !!) it runs pretty good (with the ENB patch for XP and Dualcores naturaly
