Best Order to do Quests?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 3:48 am

Does anyone here think there is a 'Best Order' to do the Questlines in Skyrim?

I always figured it'd be best to do the Faction Quests first, then the Civil War, then the Main Quest - so that way none of them interfere with one another. Is that correct?

I know it doesn't matter and that there probably is no 'Best Order', but just in case...

I just want to get the most out of my game or playthroughs.

From what I can tell it don't really matter which order you do them in. It's all up to you.

I like mixing it up. I like doing the main quests up to getting the horn early so that you can buy Breezehome as soon as possible and fus ro dah everything. Fus and Fus Ro are meh. Fus Ro Dah is so fun to me.

What I do from character to character is pick the most important faction RP-wise (ie: Thieves Guild,) and I follow the main questline to each hold, and do everything ever in that hold. Explore all parts of it, clear every dungeon, that sorta thing. When it's done, I do the next part in the questline, explore that hold, etc.

Right now I'm all about doing the TG first. Particularly getting the City Influence quests finished ASAP. This includes becoming Jarl of Riften at the same time. This is so you can do all your selling in one city in one day---or at least the shortest amount of time possible. Also, Honeyside is only a few thousand more than Breezehome and it comes with both an enchanting table AND alchemy lab. It sets you up nicely for the rest of the game.

The one sideroad I'll take next time before going to Riften is to retrieve the Dragonstone and kill the dragon at the Western Watchtower and getting three shouts for Unrelenting Force. The second I have that third shout, I'm in Riften.

It all depends on my character. My first was a warrior so I joined the Companions then the Dark Brotherhood. After that I completed the main quest so I could unlock the shouts you get from that quest line. For me, completing the main quest kinda made the rest of my game not quite as enjoyable because after doing that it felt like the rest of the game was just doing additional tasks with no real purpose in the end. This time I am playing as a mage and joined the College first and after I started feeling ill for some reason (some kind of bite, maybe?) I did the Companions even though I really hadn't planned on going that route. Before I did either of those I did part of the main quest to get the dragons to spawn and haven't touched it since. I am now having a lot of fun just screwing around doing miscellaneous quests and not being in a big hurry to finish the guild quests and especially the main quest. It will be a very long time before I finally decide to take Alduin down this playthrough. Even though the game isn't over when the main quest is completed I like it much better not feeling like I have "finished" the game.

I've done the MQ on one toon. Won't do it again. I've done the civ war to the point of trashing Whiterun from both sides, on two different toons. Won't do it again, either side. I've done the TG on one toon. Won't do it again.

I'm on pc, so what I do now is start a toon, head for a different area than I've started in before, explore, exterminate bandits, do quests locally, wander the map. Eventually, I add some quest mods. Do those, then go back to exploring. I've still not seen every place on the map.... I might get there some day....

Depends on the class you are playing. After giving the MQ a break once the dragonstone quest is given, by the way give it a break and you'll see Delphine hanging around dragonreach waiting for a copy of the tomb locations, for a warrior, comapnions to level up all the warrior skill from various trainer, and for free if you choose the follower/trainer exploit, for a thief, head over to Riften and join the thieves guild, and for a Mage, College of Winterhold. All the factions provide a bed and storage containers. After that you can do anything in any order you want.

Definitely. Level 3 Unrelenting Force is a game-changer, even more so with a low-level character.

As for the OP: I find I enjoy the game more if I do the MQ as the last thing for the character. It feels more...complete that way.

Depends on the character and what I am roleplaying. I'm currently playing an Argonian rogue who isn't even the dragonborn. His story will end with the TG questline. He's stopped at "Speak with Alvor" in the MQ, and "Message to Whiterun" in the CW. My Nord Warrior/Stormcloak/Companion's story ende when he returned to Breezehome from Sovengard.

With all my characters I like to at least do CW, Thane, and at least one of the guild questlines. I also never do one after the other, but have them all going at the same time.
