Best review I've read

So when Brink was released this site came out and said "http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/05/why-were-not-review-brink-and-why-you-shouldnt-buy-it-yet.ars" Makes good sense.

To me reviewing a game when there are known issues is stupid.. more so when you know those issues can/will be corrected shortly yet you review the game and count those flaws in. It bothers me more so that the majority of reviews that have came out about this game are ZERO day reviews meaning people fully reviewed this game fully in a few hours of release or at very least the same day.

being an older PC gamer (gaming PC since '94) I understand sometimes game have bugs when released and in my experience developers almost always correct them. I also remember a time where if i game was released reviews on the game didn't come out for weeks or a month later.

BUT WHY!!11

Because it gave the reviewers time to actually play the game, give it some effort and enjoy the game, not get out a check list and fill it out in two hours. So when i saw this news posting from the above review site i saw something i haven't seen in a LONG time... that is common sense.

So posted a 2 days later was their semi review or first take of the game found here. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/05/brink-for-pc-runs-great-plays-well-online-is-a-ton-of-fun.ars and I think they nailed it.

Also it is great to see finally that PC gamers have a PC game that is ported to console instead of a console game ported to PC.

I have PC and highly enjoy this game and have not had any technical issues that i would complain about. Sure the game exits 100% sometimes middle of the game, sure I can't host a game and when I join a friends game every 1minute i get about 5 seconds of solid lag but you know what.. I'm OK with that because I know it will be corrected.

I enjoy this game a lot and see a lot of innovating features of this game that i wouldn't doubt games coming out in the next few years will implement as well.

I fully agree with the op. wish I felt comfortable enough with a Keyboard and Mouse to get it on PC, but without support for a controller it's a no go over on that side of the house for me. Here is to hoping that SD will make things as right as they can over on the 360 side of the house.

"Brink for PC: runs great, plays well online, is a ton of fun"

Runs great indeed. I have a quad core Alienware laptop that I bought at the end of 2008, and I tell you so far this game runs far better on it than I expected.

Great find! I really like that they were completely upfront about things. I know Gamespot tries to be honest about these things most of the time (such as when they haven't had a chance to play the PS3 version of a game or whatever), though in the end they just do a copy/paste job anyways. Good to see some places out there trying to maintain a standard of integrity.

Having said that, unfortunately it really does seem like this game is a lost cause on console. I'm glad to see that some (most?) PC users are having a good experience with it, but it's just a giant mess on console, and frankly I don't think it's something that can be fixed with a patch or two, or seven.

Or 19. Though... To be quite honest... I've been pondering in trading Brink for L.A. Noire. Something that I don't want to do. I do find Brink quite enjoyable when the graphical issues don't make the game look like PS2/beer-vision and I get into a match that is actually lag free. However, I'm frustrated and not having an ounce of fun most of the time due to said issues.

Same. I had 2 games that were relatively lag free and it was a pretty fun experience, but they're just so few and far between at this point that I can't waste my time on it.

I traded mine in this morning while I still had a window of time with a decent TIV, according to the guy at the store it's dropping like mad as they're getting way too many in. I'm not saying this to troll however, I'll gladly pick it up again if they somehow work out all the problems as this was a game I was really looking forward to. That being said, I just figure it's going to be a while, a long while, if ever so I might as well use that credit to try out some other games.

Actually believe it or not this game isn't ported to anything, it was developed for each console/PC seperately. Also I'm jelouse of you PC players because right now Xbox is having a little bit of a lag issue due to the fact that their are no servers and people's internet cannot support the massive amount of stuff happening... It's still increadibly fun tho

To me reviewing a game when there are known issues is stupid.

Let me start by saying that I love Brink, and once the lag on the 360 is fixed, it will be my #1 multiplayer game.

That said, I completely disagree with this. A game should be reviewed when it comes out, not once the company has taken the time post-release to fix all the problems they shipped the game with. There needs to be SOME consequence to launching a game with a lot of problems, and if that comes in the form of lower reviews, so be it. But it everyone waits to review games once they're all fixed, then there will be no reason for game developers NOT no release a broken game and patch it later.

Think of it as a review for food at a restaurant. You'd review the food when it got to your table. If your steak showed up undercooked, you wouldn't send it back, get a better steak, and review the better steak. You'd dock points from the restaurant for having to wait while your steak, which should have been done correctly the first time, was fixed. The same thing applies here.

I concur! LOTS of fun when you get a smooth server! I'm sure things will get better with the lag but for now a little patience will give you hours of fun in return.

It will be interesting to see how the PS3 on line will be... when they finally get their network back (Now that's some lag...) :brokencomputer:

While I disagree with the type of comparison I'll attempt to use it. In this case I would agree, they would be docked however I'm also sure that the reviewer would note that they did get a correctly cooked steak and it was great the second time.

Where as the majority of reviews for a PC game is a once done it is done.

The game hadn't come out. That was the point. Journalists got copies early, despite the announcement of a day one patch that was supposed to fix the issues that every other journalist complained about before the patch on their release day reviews. I hear it is basically the same after the patch, though... I wish these forums were seperated by platform...
