Best sidestory?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 12:21 am

What's your favorite side-story within New Vegas? Randall Clark? Vault 11? The entire Dead Money experience?
They're ALL good, but I'm curious to know which one people like the most.

My vote goes to Dead Money. I laughed, I cried, I almost died. An amazing experience.

Also, which story did you think was the worst? Either because you couldn't follow it, couldn't understand it, just weren't impressed with it etc?

I think Vault 34 is a good candidate for this one, seeing as it stands out as being one story where the alleged dates of events simply don't seem to add up at all.

I'm going to go with the Christine vs. Elijah side story, spanning through Dead Money, some of OWB, and also mentioned in the main game.

My second favorite would have to be Joshua Graham and his story with the New Caananites.

I'm not sure whether Ulysses' story really counts as a side story, since it ties in with the life of the Courier and such, but I found his background to be pretty interesting as well.

Randall Clark's journals were great too, and I think they were one of the best things about HH.

Vault 11 was meh

Vault 34 :nope: I just hate Vault 34, exploring it gives me a headache every playthrough.

1) "Kiss America goodbye, boys."
2) Vault 11. I HATE KATE
3) Boone's story.

My most disliked... Well, any vault besides 11. 21 was nothing special, 3 was wasted opportunity, 22 is but a shell of what it was, 19 has little backstory to it, 34 was just a filler and a pain to navigate in.

Favourite story, probably Veronica's or Cass' companion quests. They were interesting and I like having the immediate feedback from a follower when a milestone has been reached, rather than just a new quest objective appear on the screen.

Also Dead Money the story was great, would make a great movie. But the gameplay...well, I'm looking forward to doing it again (melee/unarmed next playthrough), but I know I will find it hard going. The story yes, the gameplay, not so much.

This. None of the other tales and adventures in any part of the game or DLC's came close to the feelings I got from his simple, poignant diary entries, and finally finding his bones and drinking a toast to him at sunset with his bottle of whiskey (well aged). What this story accomplished, in the form it was presented, allowed you to truly see through one of the game character's eyes, and feel with his heart what he had felt, through all his years of loneliness, love, depression, joy, hatred, and abject hopelessness. They put a whole lot of life into a few random computer log entries. Granted, that kind of character building and storytelling is pretty hard to fit into the regular RPG encounters with living NPC's, to be sure. The written word will always be superior for evoking emotions and describing actual feelings, than anything that can be done in a graphical or video environment.

Worst sidestory? All of the Legion stuff. The whole premise that any right-thinking human being who isn't already a cold bandit or outlaw murderer/abuser type would ever deliberately join them and do their evil sneaky bidding, sickens me. If they had done more with them than made them a pretty unbelievable caricature of evil incarnate, and produced more and more interesting and better-written quests for that side, that might have been different.

(2)Dead Money- The last time I raged at the Gameplay but loved the story
(3) Ulysses

Worst. One. Ever.
Legion, for the lack of the great story they could have had but the deadline was such [censored].

The beginning of the story was badass, then they kind of skimmed over everything until they discovered Hoover Dam.

'I Could Make You Care' was the best experience for me, partially because I didn't see the ending coming, but also because the story was great - since I was firstly introduced to the BoS via FO3, it made the faction seem a lot more real and well-rounded. Veronica as written is so adorable that I was emotionally invested throughout the quest, even through the immensely frustrating Vault 22. Plus, Felicia Day.

Least favourite side-quest..... probably 'There Stands the Grass', because, as mentioned. freaking Vault 22. The FO3/FNV map marker system just doesn't work well with multiple levels, or multiple objectives. That or 'Come Fly With me' - was annoyed with Manny Vargas for making me go out of my way when I just wanted to find that fink Benny, then was irritated by that ridiculous fake ghoul (cool concept, just the character was annoying) and all the fetching, which was boring because it took forever and I wasn't emotionally invested in the Bright Brotherhood.

Ulysses' story is my overall favourite followed by the tale of the Big Mountain Research Centre.

I have to go for Randall Clark. I found his story to be genuinely moving.
I find the Dead Money story to be quality as well. Like a lot of people I found the gameplay pretty frustrating in places, but that's kind of what makes it good too. It's different. And you're suddenly trapped in a dangerous situation after parading around the wasteland wasting everything that offends you with your huge arsenal.

Veronica's story is my all time favorite, mostly because I love Veronica. She's such a sweetie!
Bye Bye Love is a close second. I find it to be a great little story, and I really enjoyed bring two lost lovers back together.
Melody's Teddy Bear is another cute little hidden quest. There's not much too it, but I enjoy seeing a little girl in the Legion.

Just adding another: I Put a Spell on You for the Legion is another great quest! One of the few times you get to be a real spy doing real things, not just fetching. So much goes into the quest for the Legion side of it.

Randall Clark/the survivalist...such a sad story. The guilt...the lonliness...finding companionship and losing it all again....his version of redemption....I always leave him tributes in every playthru.

Raul's story is sad but great as well....he's been thru hell and back like Clark and yet he seems to keep a sense of humor...kind of.

I also liked Dr. Borous's story....personally I didn't have any traumatic high school experiences but have had friends that did and couldn't let go.

I really liked Graham's story, but an overall favourite... Hmmm. It must be Arcade Gannon and the Remnants, a really well designed quest with affable characters.

In no particular order:

1. Arcade Gannon's story.
2. Dean Domino's background at the Sierra Madre.
3. Victor.
4. Ulysses and The Divide.

I haven't played any of the DLC.. yet! But, I think my favourite would be Boone's story. I loved the whole mystery that surrounded everything, Boone being well guarded up until you unlock the quest and then opening up to you like that. It was a very tragic and sad story, but there was hope at the end!

One I was very dissapointed with was the Legend of the Star. Anyone think that could have been expanded on way more? When I first played through it, after that guy told me about the stars I got really excited about the treasure. Then I ran into the random encounter with that dude shooting the girl over his "lucky" necklace. Got me real hyped for the quest, was another mysterious aura surrounding it. But the end result lacked something for me. :/ Indeed, it IS a valuable lesson, however I was hoping for more.

Another one that comes to mind is the Ultra Luxe's quest. I enjoyed the detective like work that went into that. When I first played I had no idea what they were, so when I found out while investigating it was a big huge woah moment. And locking the chef in the freezer was classic ^^ what was even better though, was the medical speech check xD
