Anti-material rifle. Especially if you load it with incendiary ammo.

If you're including energy weapons in that, the YCS/187 gauss rifle takes the cake. That's only available if you haven't taken Wild Wasteland, though, and you have to find it in a random encounter.

However, I've found that the marksman carbine (especially its unique version, the All American) is also very useful against anything that doesn't have 18+ DT, since it's got a 20 round clip, uses plentiful 5.56mm ammo, and can be fired as fast as you can click. Not nearly as much damage as a true sniper rifle, but it makes up for it in other ways IMO.

Depends on the situation. This is my personal view on what I like for a given situation.

Typical Sniper Rifle (FO3 style one) - Good for stronger mutated animals as well as lightly to moderately armored enemies using Plain and Armor piercing rounds.

Varmit Rifle with Scope - Excellent against weaker mutated animals as well as unarmored human enemies using the armor piercing round

Anti-material rifle - Excellent against all targets although abit over kill for anything other than moderately to heavily armored enemies. Works best in my book with the plain .50 cal, the armor piercing .50 cal and the .50 cal incendiary rounds.

Now over all I would have to say the best for me that I use the most is the Gauss rifle. But it is pretty much useless against Power armor as well as heavier armored opponets, which is where the armor piercing Sniper rifle and Anti-material rifle comes in very handy.

As far as the most used rifle I use that would be the cowboy repeater with a selection of convential, hollow point, and armor piercing rounds but that doesnt fit in on this topic of best sniper rifle.

I fell in love with the marksman carbine, sniped some ants in the dry lake, so epic. Don't mind me, i'm just praising the game as usual here. The ammo for it is plentiful too.

Anti-Material it is then, thanks. I have the Gobi Campaign scout rifle at the mo is that worth keeping? I only want one rifle.

On a side note I have no idea what all this ammo stuff means I tried to understand it but it goes way over my head. I am most likely making it hard on myself by not using the right ammo for the job. Im just finding guns and using them with the ammo it uses as default. I thought fallout 3 was much easier to understand, im a casual gamer sort of thing as my car and girlfriend take up most of my time.

The Gobi sniper rifle>most other long range guns. Its more accurate than the AM rifle, but obviously does less damage. Still more damage than the other sniper rifles.

Its not really that hard to understand. You can be told in game by the general store owner in Goodsprings he basically tells you that armor piercing is for punching through armor doing damage to them where as hollow point and convential rounds wouldnt do as much damage. Like wise hollow points do more damage to un armored enemies than the convential ammo.

So basically it goes like this

Armor piercing = best at doing more damage to armored targets
Hollow point = Best at doing more damage to unarmored targets
Standard = basic general bullet that wont do very much damage to armored targets, and will not do as much damage to un armored targets as hollow points will.

The All-American is a great rifle for mid-long range, supports few different ammo types to allow for quick killing of whatever you're shooting.

True sniper rifle's gotta be Anti-materiel or the gobi sniper rifle.

Yeah thats not bad to understand, My problem is ive got loads of 'case' ammo and and other stuff (cant remember names) which I have no idea what that means apart from I cant use it. I had a go at making my own ammo on a reload bench and I had no idea what the hell I was suppose to do so gave up. I have no idea how to use this special ammo. Infact I have dont know how to do much thats been changed from fallout 3, I did the tutorial too but im still clueless.

case stands for the case of the shell of the type of ammo that you shot. the outside bit. you "pick" some up after you shoot em so you can make more ammo out of them. they are not ammo yet

Anti-Material Rifle all the way.

I just got it, and I love it. Just need to find a way to make more incendiary rounds for it.

Im quite enjoying a "Ratslayer" I found, I think its unique. Its a silenced sniper rifle with a scope on it that adjusts to light.

Yes you need to use the reloader bench to reload the shells which are empty casings to become bullets again. First you will need to either...

A. break down other type of ammo which will give you gun powder as well as different primers for small pistol, large pistol, small rifle, big rifle, small shot gun, big shotgun as well as lead.

B. buy some rifle or pistol powder from a vendor depending on what you will reload as well as buying the primers for what you need (ie small or large pistol, small or large rifle, ect).

You could also pick up scrap metal which at the bench if you scroll all the way down and hover over the bottom most which is converting scrap iron into lead for reloading your guns. Once you do this then reloading the different rounds is all dependant on your skill level. My first play through I was able to reload shot gun shells (12 ga break down to use in 10 ga shells) to slug status. My new play through I am not able to cause I dont have the skill yet to make slugs.

When you hover over a bullet you want to craft it lists the skill you have and the skill required to craft said item.

Its at a place called 'Snipers nest' in a hard locked box on the floor, If you type the name of the place in on google you should find the location.

Ok half of that means nothing to me its like a different language. Hovering over bullets and stuff? I havnt even seen any seperate bullets lying around. It sounds like alot of hassle to get it all right, 12ga 10ga? I will have a go at it now but I think im still going to end up just using normal ammo.

I have it too but it's not a sniper. It's just a Varmint Rifle with a scope and a damage bonus.

Any scoped rifle used to snipe can be considered a sniper rifle. A varmint rifle with a scope applied would count as a sniper rifle if used as a sniper rifle.
