Best spouse for an evil character?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 3:53 am

Wondering if anyone could suggest a good Nord male spouse for my current evil character.

I liked Vilkas after I talked with him about the companions, but his alignment is good and he belongs to the Companions, who are also known for being a good organization. So he would not accept what my character is and would likely consider me his enemy. I would also need to become a werewolf and complete the Companions quest to be able to marry him, but that's not something I want to do with this character.

Vorstag from Markarth seems nice and willing to do any crime. His "Don't start any trouble without me" line is quite fitting I think  He is so far my first choice but I would like to see more of the potential spouses, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Here is some background on my character:

- She is a Nord warrior specializing in one-handed weapons (mace in particular), shield and heavy armor. She is also competent with a bow.

- She is the listener of the Dark Brotherhood, faithful to the Night Mother / Sithis. Her life centers around this and she carries out the contracts given by her without hesitation.

- Reveres Nocturnal and Boethiah, wears the Ebony Mail and has Nightingale Powers.

- She is friends with the Thief's Guild and maintains connections with Delvin to get supplies for the Sanctuary. She offered to help them during their bad time (she completed the Thief's quests to the point of returning the Skeleton Key but did not become Guildmaster).

- She can turn around and betray/kill people she has previously helped like she did to Illia and Eola or kill someone just because she wanted their armor, as she did to Uthgerd the Unbroken. She also kills people who threaten/annoy her, as she did with two different orcs who called her "milkdrinker" as she passed by or the Imperial guards who dared draw their sword when she was simply walking by them while they were escorting a prisoner. Same with the Thalmor. And of course, Nazeem, Dirge, the Talos Worshiper and several others have fallen to the swing of her legendary ebony mace.

- Kills the Vigilant of Stendarr on sight due to their fierce opposition to the Daedra.

- She is the Thane of Dawnstar and has gained the favor/trust of the people there. All done, of course, for the sake of making things safe for the Brotherhood Sanctuary there and play down the rumors about the "black door".

The spouse she would have knows and accepts all this, who would you suggest? Is Vorstag the best choice? I would prefer if he is a warrior like her.

Muiri or Eola are both good wives for characters of questionable moral backgrounds. Not sure about husbands though.

You might want to check the wiki on marriage candidates and look at each one individually to see how they will react to any crime you commit. For instance Vilkas and some of the other Companions can become hostile on sight if you have an outstanding bounty because they are tagged as part of one or more "law enforcement" factions. Not the thing you want to come home to after a hard day's night of killing and thieving. :P

Does she own a house? If not, I suggest she marries someone for his property. He could always die of, ehrm, natural causes, leaving her with a nice house.

She does, recently purchased Honeyside in Riften. Being a member of the thief guild it is a "safe" place and is also away from the Sanctuary, somewhere she can go to and lay back and relax. Killed the housecarl Iona tho, she is just a boring short-haired Lydia and also seems to make a mess in the house all the time, leaving things on the floor and such. It is also a very personal/private space for her so sharing it with a housecarl is a no no.

Ah, Muiri is interesting and she already likes the Dark Brotherhood and "hired" it's services, not just for one but for two targets. Hmm...sadly she is not a Nord or a follower.

You mean in The Drunken Huntsman? If she was there I have not seen her. Besides, that shop is barren now after my character performed a triple homicide there (killing Elrindir, Nazeem and Anoriath, who was the target) and later sacrificed Jenassa to Boethiah. Also killed the other girl who sleeps in the top floor for telling me "I hope the wilds claim you" every time I passed by her.

Thanks for the list Levothroxian.

Hirelings seem extremely okay with any and all taboo/evil things that the Dragonborn does, so Volstag is a good option. He's also not bad on the eyes either. <3

My current evil-doer is married to Jenassa but since you sacrificed her, my previous evil character was married to Ysolda, so as to hide in plain sight by being married to a boring average seeming woman. Kinda like Dexter and Rita.

You could go passive/agressive evil like I did. Had a vampire character that was member of the thieves guild. Did Mjoll's quest (Grimsever) so she became a follower and marriage material. So I married her, gave her rags to wear, took away all of her stuff (including Grimsever), and basically made her my house wench. Then became guildmaster of TG and laughed maniacally every time I talked to her. But that's just me...

Indeed. I went ahead and married Vorstag, liked him the best. I intend for him to remain in Honeyside when my character is performing a contract for the DB but to always come along when exploring or doing other quests.

I have a question tho, is there any way to make him wear regular clothing? I bought some nice clothes for him and my character for the wedding and also to use while just walking around Riften or some other city but he always has his original armor if I give them to him. He does wears the Ebony armor I made for him, but not regular clothes. Is there a way to do this? I am not on PC but on PS3 so console commands are not an option.

Another thing, he said he would start a store (which Jordis whom I married with another character also did), is there a way to influence how much money the store makes? What determines this?

My character also made her mark in Riften yesterday, got rid of Haelga in the marketplace after getting tired of her snide remarks. Started a riot by hitting her with the Nightingale Subterfuge power. The blacksmith and another citizen met their demise in the incident :P

Followers seem to wear whatever gives them the highest armor rating & protection (altho they don't always figure in tempering and improvements you've made on items) regardless of the situation. They also come equipped with default gear, and if it's armor they're going to revert back to that even if you take away everything you gave them except the regular clothes. Generally "regular clothes" will never be preferable to them, unfortunately the only way to really micromanage their gear and apparel is through mods and console commands.

I don't know what determines how much gold he has in his cash register when you ask him about it, but without modding the game there doesn't seem to be any way to influence it unless you buy stuff from him, in which case he's got extra gold on hand for the time being but it will probably reset the way any other merchant's gold does. At any rate your "cut" will always be 100 septims per day, no more and no less.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that one could pickpocket the follower to steal their default armor in order to force them to use the one you want but sadly it is not possible.

Followers are clearly not among Skyrim's strong points. They should have given you more freedom with them, letting you equip them with whatever you want. There is also their actions and behavior in battle, no options to customize them. Dragon Age: Origins did it quite well with it's Tactics, so did Final Fantasy XII with the Gambit system. This is an area they definitely need to improve for the next game.

I am guessing you are not on PC because if you are you can remove their default armor if you no what it's id is in the console.

I don't know about pickpocketing, if it's visible in their inventory then if you have the skill/perks I suppose it's possible. But some if not all default gear is "hidden" - probably to avoid it being taken away unintentionally and not replaced, leaving followers walking around in their undies... altho how you wouldn't notice that immediately and give them something to wear (or not, if you happen to like them that way  ) is beyond me.

I did have Marcurio as a follower once and we parted ways and later on I went back to Riften to hire him again. He was still wearing some armor I'd given him before, but when I took it away from him his default robes were just... gone! And there the poor man was, standing there in nothing but a loincloth. I just assumed that somebody had stolen his other stuff. It was Riften after all. But honestly I don't know how it happened. Every other follower I've had, if you dismiss them and reacquire them their default gear seems to reset on acquisition.

There are some great mods out there for followers and frankly they make all the difference in the world IMO. I've got one that converts all default gear into tradeable inventory, which means my housecarl is at home right now in Windhelm wearing fine clothes and boots with his armor and weapons stored safely away until he actually needs them again. It's really a shame that everybody can't have access to the great work the modders do for stuff like that.
