Best TES Game?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:16 pm

I'll step in and say I think the best TES game, as of right now, is Oblivion.

However, my favorite is Morrowind. I think it's more charming, it has an atmosphere I enjoy more, and I am more interested in its story, but outside of personal preferences, I think Oblivion is an overall better game and made several much needed improvements. I've also played Oblivion more than Morrowind, despite having Morrowind much much longer.

As far as I'm concerned, it goes Oblivion > Morrowind > Daggerfall > Arena. I haven't played Battlespire, and Redguard is so vastly different from all the other games, it can't really be compared to them.

I have to say Morrowind, without a doubt.

Daggerfall would contest it, but modability can vastly improve a game.

I also didn't enjoy Oblivion.

Surprisingly calm, here.

I voted Oblivion.

Personally, I don't understand what it is about Oblivion that so many people despise. The gaming mechanics and graphics were improved, and the story was pretty nice to. It was much easier to roleplay for me because of the actual speaking parts.. But thats just me.

I have a deep and abiding affection for Morrowind and I think it is a superior game in many ways. But when I play an Elder Scrolls game nowadays I play Oblivion.

I voted for Morrowind.

I enjoyed Oblivion at first, but the repetitive dungeons and level-scaling (among other things) made the game become bland by level 30 for me. I also like Daggerfall alot, but I've only been able to play it in spurts because the labyrinthian dungeons can be tedious, and bugs make it frustrating at times. Morrowind wasn't perfect, but it had the best mix of everything out of any of the TES games in my opinion. I'm hoping that Skyrim will be the best of them all, but I'm a little skeptical after learning about the loss of attributes.

Oblivion was the first tes game I've played, but I've really loved getting a shiny new computer and playing Morrowind on it, and I have heard that Daggerfall is the best tes game....

I've only played Oblivion and Morrowind so my vote goes to Morrowind.

Edit- No offense, but I do not understand why anyone would vote for Redguard.

Battlespire and Redguard are the two non-mobile phone games I haven't played. From what I hear, Redguard had bad controls, but the story was really good. Sload, Dwemer, Piracy, and I believe it's where the Dunmer got thier attitudes from.

Scary that this is back. but, to be honest, I think Bethesda need to look at these kind of threads and realise that the fanbase is fond of Morrowind. They should look at the more prominent features (Not gameplay mechanisms), such as the originality of the game. We want more original creatures, not all wolves and bears and giants.

The best was probably Morrowind, but I voted for Daggerfall. It's immersion was so absolute, the game was almost mythological for me. It feels like you're in an actual living, breathing world, with hundreds of thousands of people going on about their lives, oblivious to the events around them. As someone who's done some travelling and touring myself, the way you go through all these small towns whose names you don't remember, or wander through crowded city streets through throngs of faceless people, occasionally stopping one to ask for directions, is incredibly true to my own experiences, and playing Daggerfall is a great way to experience the joy and freedom of life on the road without having to put up with all the hassles and dangers associated with it (except for the bugs, of course, hah). It's not the best game, but no game can ever make me feel the way Daggerfall does.

They know. How could they not? So many people are flat-out obnoxious with their love for Morrowind that it's impossible NOT to notice.

I also think the unique creatures is one of the least important things that Morrowind did. Sure, they were cool, but that's what is appropriate of Morrowind. I would have been angry if they did that for Oblivion too, and I'll be angry if they do that for Skyrim. I mean, yeah, there should be a few unique creatures here and there, and of course there will be, but Skyrim is the origin of humans. Cyrodiil is the home of Imperials. It's not supposed to be crazy and alien.

It's also worth noting that the people who inhabit this forum and post regularly probably make up about 5% of the people who buy the game.

My personal favourite is Oblivion with mods.

Vanilla Morrowind is better than vanilla Oblivion though.

I also love Daggerfall for its enormous world. That is the size of world RPG developers should be aiming for.

Why do people link "Crazy and Alien" with originality? Every damn time. I'm not asking for giant mushrooms, or people who live in giant dead crabs. I'm asking for ORIGINALITY. Learn the word. Horkers, for example. They were pretty original. Not alien. Warcraft's Tauren. They seemed original. Not alien.

But I guess I'm just "Bashing Oblivion" again, aren't I?

I think the better question is why you don't expect people to think "crazy and alien" when you suggest TES games have "original" creatures like Morrowind, whose creatures were all crazy and alien.

Regardless, Morrowind's gimmick was pretty much stranger-in-a-strange-land. None of the other Elder Scrolls games do that.

Listening to half the things that are announced for Skyrim and interviews with Todd Howard will let you know that they are fully aware of the typical TES fan and their views on Morrowind. They've already said they see a lot of what Oblivion lost from Morrowind and things like that, as well as explaining why they don't just make Morrowind 2 or something similar.

And yes, it does come off as bashing Oblivion when Morrowind is the odd one out and Oblivion is following suit from the rest of the series.

Vanilla? Morrowind.

With mods? Oblivion.

I'm a PC gamer, so that means Oblivion wins by default.

Honourable mention to Daggerfall though for the sheer scale of its world. That's exactly how big RPG worlds should be.

Morrowind. The main quest was simply amazing. You got to choose whether you are Nerevar reborn or not.Actually, the game allowed the player so much freedom that it makes me wonder if the Nerevarine wasn't in fact well on his/her way of achieving Chim and all that was left was choosing to do so.
The faction conflict was just great and not only that. The atmosphere, the character (the mortal gods)...and so on.These things made the game unforgettable. It had its share of bugs, some of them pissed me off, to be honest, but Morrowind, especially today, is a game that requires us to see beyond the pixels. What's better is that the game's so good, it doesn't take much effort to do so, and even without mods, the game world comes alive.

Morrowind still sets a benchmark for me in culture, lore, interesting story and ease of modding - it's a very accessible game and as addictive as skooma

Morrowind, it had so much more attention to detail in it than the other games - and the story was incredible.

First one I played, too - that probably affects it.

And no love for Arena? Awwww...
Morrowind for content but Oblivion for polish

Polish only as far as their graphics were considered. Still pretty buggy (but I never understood everyone's complaints, really).
