Best TES Moment

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:28 pm

Okay, let me explain. I'm putting this in the lore forum as oppoesd to TES general for a reason: I don't mean cool gameplay moments like "I knocked the Adoring Fan off Dive Rock." I mean story moments, any event in all of the TES mythology from the creation of Anu and Padomay to the beginning of the Fourth Era and the immediate openers (which is to say, the ending of Oblivion, KotN and SI).

Note: If you really like the Loveletter, that's also fair game technically speaking.

Another Note: If this thread is around after the release of the books and/or the next full TES intallment, that'll count too.

I have to say that one of them high up on my list is when the greybeards announced Tiber Septim. I have this mental video that plays sometimes when I sit in the dark and try to sleep, and it is quite an impresive thing my imagination has come up with as to what that would have looked like.

Azura's speech at the end of the Morrowind main quest. Martin's speech at the end of Oblivion MQ was good too, but it can't compare to Azura's.

Murder of Nerevar. The moment the Tribunal realized they would kill their king, friend and husband, one they loved and that was their better; the moment after, seeing it was done, the beginning of their immortal struggle with guilt.

Probably seeing Mehrunes Dagon standing over the Temple District, I mean we've read about him being summoned and destroying cities before, but to actual see him there, that was pretty amazing.

Everything within a year of Red Mountain isn't an event, it's a kaleidoscope of four different scenarios.

This moment was also impressive, part of the day Lady Olivia mentioned:

"And no sooner than we had completed our rituals and begun to discover our new-found powers, the Daedra Lord Azura appeared and cursed us for our foresworn oaths. By her powers of prophecy, she assured us that her champion, Nerevar, true to his oath, would return to punish us for our perfidy, and to make sure such profane knowledge might never again be used to mock and defy the will of the gods. But Sotha Sil said to her, "The old gods are cruel and arbitrary, and distant from the hopes and fears of mer. Your age is past. We are the new gods, born of the flesh, and wise and caring of the needs of our people. Spare us your threats and chiding, inconstant spirit. We are bold and fresh, and will not fear you."

And then, in that moment, all Chimer were changed into Dunmer, and our skins turned ashen and our eyes into fire. Of course, we only knew at that time that this had happened to us, but Azura said, "This is not my act, but your act. You have chosen your fate, and the fate of your people, and all the Dunmer shall share your fate, from now to the end of time. You think yourselves gods, but you are blind, and all is darkness." And Azura left us alone, in darkness, and we were all afraid, but we put on brave faces, and went forth from Red Mountain to build the new world of our dreams."

(from The Battle of Red Mountain)

Another memorable moment is when you first open the door to the Cavern of the Failed Incarnates and talk to their spirits. Very moving, when they pass the torch to you, in effect.

That was an "oh crap" moment if I ever saw one. Me vs. the embodiement of revolution and natural disaster.

That entire bit was pretty cool, especially the first time. Very tense, the big bad dude of the game just standing there calmly talking, so assured that his actions are justified and, further, the right thing to do. So sure, that it begins to effect you, making you think "am I right to stand against him?"

I spent the end of the MW MQ pissed off at the game for allowing me to recall out of the chamber and break the MQ after Ur's death. Then the damn ring was too small to see floating in the air.

Clarification: events where more than one incobpadible event happend at the same time, all of those are fair game and can be either individually or collectively mentioned. Because some cool stuff tends to happen in these messed up garble-times. Like Daggerfall's ending, if 7you like mannimarco that counts.

The Battle of Red Mountain itself. For some reason, I see Nerevar as something like Viscount Dundee from real life. A humble career before a single explosive event, and killed, possibly by treachery, in the moment of triumph.

Actually, I enjoyed reading the letters between Sotha Sil and Divayth Fyr.

Goes along the lines of "WTF YOU WERE MY MENTOR A THOUSAND YEARS AGO HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?"

I think it was one of the player's dialogue options during Morrowind, in the final battle with Dagoth Ur. Your character can either believe he is Nerevar reincarnated, or not.

I see. I haven't played through MW yet. I just purchased the GTY Edition, though, so I look forward to finding my own favorite moment.

I suppose I can say that Lord Vivec's Sword-Meeting With Cyrus the Restless was pretty cool. Cyrus fights (or bluffs) the great Vehk. For a minute it seemed as if the fate of the Island (maybe Tamriel) hung on Cyrus' decision.

I think Nerevar's entire life was perhaps one of the greatest tragedies in and of itself- his rise from caravan guard to the forger of peace between the Chimer and the Dwemer to the leader of the new and combined nation of Resdayn- and holding that peace and that nation together- on his own, for a couple hundred years only to, in the end be betrayed by those closest to him.

I think the vast difference between Nerevar and, say, Septim (and, you could even say, most other famous royalty in the Elder Scrolls)is that A. By ALL accounts he was a stand up, honest and righteous guy- which, if you look through Spetim's shady history, there is clearly at least the possibility and/or suggestion of several backstabbing moments. (first with his own king when he was the general of an army and then with the underking and. or Zurin Arctus- or what/whoever) B. Nerevar didn't become who he was or get to where he was out of a sense of ambition so much as duty... his wasn't an expansionist empire. (at least not that I know of.)

I have a number of favorite moments, the best is reading about legends of Nerevar, I would shift through multiple books and documents find out more. The story of Nerevar is my number one TES story. Hope there will be more Nerevarine legends in future Elder Scrolls.
I also like the part in SI when you just enter and the butterflies burst out from a drab room to a frenzy of colour and life.

Specifically, this is my favourite 'moment' -

But when Vehk the mortal reached into the Heart, he ceased to be anything except for what he wished to be. The axis erupted. There was an exact cracking, an instant of pure Aurbis, his hands burnt black by that ever-nil of static change, and Vivec the god who had never been had always been. A whole universe swelled up to legitimize his throne... as the old universe, where Vehk the mortal still lapped up Godsblood, warped itself to accept its new equivalent. And like all things magical it simply could not happen, could not Be. Red Mountain was the intersection of the Is-Is Not as it was of old, its center point, and it did not hold. And so the Dragon, having broken, saw fit to heal, turning into the world you know. Except now Vivec the God was alive before his own birth, which had, in fact, really happened in the death of the last universe.

I hope you realize that we know next to absolutely nothing about Nerevar's life, character, ambition, ect. He could have been a royal [censored] for all we know, hell, why else would he need a magick ring of persuasion...
