I know his default weapon is a scoped hunting rifle, so should I give him a modded Hinton rifle and use him as a sniper, or is he equally competent with an assault rifle?

Is he designed to be used as a sniper, or can he also be used as more of a hard charger?

I just picked him up as a companion and I was looting the warehouses in Goodneighbor and I ran out of room in my inventory so I gave him a compensated submachine gun and he equipped it. I didn't give him ammo but he somehow managed to get some.

get his perk and drop his ass off

I know they'll use up whatever ammo is still in the weapon if you don't give them any more. I believe they'll switch weapons once they're out of that specific ammo. At least that's how it's seemed to me.
