Best Weapons to Equip on Followers

Post » Wed Mar 17, 2010 6:13 pm

I was wondering what guns to use on what companions. Personally, I think Boone is just fine with what he has, but some of the other companions ( Arcade, Lily, Raul, Veronica) have specialty weapons choices. So if any of you guys have tried weapons like Miniguns or things like that on any of the companions tell me how it worked out. I really want one of my followers to be such a beast that I literally have to do nothing. Boone already does that for me.

Some good and bad things I have tried are:
Arcade Gannon works really good with Q-35, but I don't prefer him without the armor you get from his quest, which I take from him anyway.

I gave Raul my Ranger Sequoia once, of course I saved before I did it, for some reason he would not use it and attack with his fists.

Boone, this one was quite devastating, I gave Boone Mercy, and a large of amount of ammo that was a ton of caps to buy. He was a monster! I traveled to Cottonwood Cove, and charged in. He litteraly destroyed everyone in that place, there were a couple veterans left when he got knocked out. :mohawk:

Frankly, I send my companions to the purgatory of the Lucky 38, where I admonish them not to eat all the food and keep the couch cushions clean. They usually just get in my way and I can still keep their perks, at least the two I don't fire and just tell to "wait" there.

As for weapons for them, I like the idea of magical bullet guns. I let them keep their toys. No need to waste ammo on giving them something they don't really want to use anyways.

-Gunny out.

Agreed. It galls me no end to watch companions using high-end gear to take out Bloatflies or Coyotes or whatnot. Oh! For some kind of FFXII-gambit-style system for dictating companion behaviour. Without that, I just keep 'em on their default. Except for Veronica, she's allowed a Ballistic Fist.

I was really hoping they'd implement some sort of tactics feature with the combat wheel because I hate seeing Boone wasting .50MG rounds on a molerat. He goes through ammo so fast, I just took the AMR away from him. Veronica, however, is really good with Pushy.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I recently just got Veronica after Dead Money, and got that "Last Words" Perk.

She's pretty good, but can I change her armor?

Yep, getting her some Power Armour's your best bet. And unlike other companions, she'll wear BoS Power Armour, which is relatively easy to come by.

Hmm, What about Arcade's Power armor? You think that would look good on her, or should I just get her some T-51 or T-45?

Oh, if you've got it and you're not using it yourself, then that's the one to go for. Best armour in the game.

No, I don't have it on this particular character.

It doesn't take too long to get, I'll probably get it here in a minute.

Should I let Veronica wear Arcade's Power Armor, or I wear and give her the regular version?

It's not like caps or ammo are hard to come by, and I rarely use, but always collect unique weapons. Buying up the ammo for a companions' (unique or not) weapons whenever you pass a merchant isn't a chore, and it means they always have too much. Decent repair skill and picking up looted weapons and ammo, and repairing and dumping it directly into your companions inventory, they can use whatever they please from a fine selection.

Obviously they go for the most powerful, but I've known Cass to switch from That Gun to an energy weapon every now and then. They're just sorta there, for me, companions, pack animals that can talk. I have 'em along for their stories, not the perks or their abilities. ^_^

No one mention Surplus or bulk ammo for companion? Homemade fuel is awesome for companion as well.

Boone usually gets the All American, Cass gets Dinner Bell, Raul gets Lucky, Veronica Gets the prototype laser rifle or Laser RCW, Arcade stays with his default (I don't use him or lily much.

Any of the Guns using companions turn into a beast with a Marksman Carbine or the AA. And I second the surplus ammo. It's dirt cheap and slightly more powerful, with its only downside (high weapon wear) being negated by the fact that your companions apparently have the Anti-Entropic Field psi discipline.

Arcade is best left with his default Plasma Defender. It's powerful enough for mid-to late game use.

Cass is the shotgun girl. She is incredibly lethal with the riot shotgun and slugs, although Dinner Bell is preferable if you're having trouble keeping her supplied with 12 gauge ammo. Best companion for Deathclaw Promontory runs.

Vaquero Raul with a Brush Gun or a Ranger Sequoia= death to everything. With a scoped Trail Carbine he kills most things before you see them.

Boone... I tend to give him This Machine. .308 ammo is plentiful in this game (Contreras alone can sell you a lifetime supply) and adequately powerful against most things. This Machine is actually more powerful than the Trail Carbine+ Cowboy perk at short-to-medium ranges. If you want Boone to snipe things at long range, go with Gobi. Giving him the AMR is a colossal waste of caps.

Veronica- give her Pushy and you can send her Deathclaw-boxing. The few times you need her shooting, give her Pew Pew. It's an ammo waster, sure, but how many times do you really need V shooting?

Lilly- Lilly is best left at the Lucky 38 and forgotten about. She and Rex are the two companions that could be cut from the game and few would mourn their absence. If you MUST use her, Oh, Baby works but Knock Knock is much faster and will allow her to kill Cazadors before they can sting her.
