Best Weather System in a Video Game

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:21 pm

Any genre, any developer, whats been you're favorite weather system in a video game?

IMO, I loved Red Dead Redemption's storms, watching them roll in as the day goes on before knocking me off my feet in audio and visual detail
Close runner up being the Witcher, where the towns and NPC's would react to the weather the way they were supposed to.

Weather has always brought me into a game more than many other features, and i'm always looking for a good system to try out.

I actually enjoy weather physics in any game no matter how good or bad they are.

I enjoyed them in San Andreas (although it looked horrible). Whenever it started raining; I starting feeling cold in real life!

Also in Oblivion I think it's really well done as it has snow, rain, storms, etc; all done well (except rain falls through outdoor roofs.) :S Something I really enjoyed watching was raindrops on the ocean..

And there's Fable 3 as well. It has really fluid visuals that make anything look good.

San Andreas - Loved the actual physics of the weather, the waves on the ocean kicked up, the trees starting flailing around, flying a plane was rough, the turbulence actually existed. It acted like a real storm, despite not being perfect to look at.

Oblivion- I posted the rain falling through roofs issue earlier today as a suggestion for Skyrim to avoid, it was hard to find yourself immersed in the storm if you can't get out of it. Hiding under a rock was futile, and entering an interior blocked the storm from ever existing outside. I also was disappointed with the howling tornado-like winds that accompanied every storm.
Morrowind had the rain-falling-through-roof issue too, but it's weather was more realistic and varying, from a small shower with very little wind, to a thunderstorm tearing through the area.

I haven't played Fable 3, I heard it cut many features from Fable 2, which cut many features from Fable 1, ect. Worth the playthrough?

Don't expect to get completely caught up in it like a TES game, but yeah; it's plenty of fun. It was for me atleast. I didn't have to think to much, and just hack my way through any opposition. It has plenty of great humor and the visuals are stunning. Especially during sunset..

I did a review on it on Gamespot if you're interested.

I never paid much attention to the weather in games, but I really like how in The Witcher NPCs react to bad weather; seeking shelter from the rain and giving comments like 'Hah! The neighbour's laundry is getting wet!'

It's weird, but the new Need for Speed has great weather effects. I mean, it's not really a "system", per say, but the rain is really well done.

I did really enjoy Oblivion's weather, though. Can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Flight simulator games have the best IMO. The new il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover will have dynamic weather, and not also will it look fabulastic, but will interact with the airplanes mechanic responses and physics (winds, rain,etc...)

While the rain was stupid, the storms in Morrowind always managed to make me jump, with that one loud thunder boom. I also like the weather effects in GTA games.

Oh, Just Cause 2 was pretty good. The rain was a little overwhelming at times, but the snow and overall beauty was really good.

I don't think there's any weather system in a game that can compete with the weather mods made for the bethesda games, or for games like STALKER. The community just cares much, much more about it than the devs do.

This!

When you stare down into a valley from some high cliffs, it just looks amazing. The detail in the thunderstorms is mind blowing. You can see the flashes of light in the clouds from a distant thunderstorm and then hear the soft crack of thunder half a second or so later. RDR hands down best weather system.

I like all the puddles and mud that are left after those storms. :P

Hopefully Skyrim will have a very good weather system without having it modded. The atmosphere for the game so far seems good.

For weather I'm going to have to say Red Dead Redemption. For lighting/environment I'm going to have to go with Alan Wake. Although Alan Wake has an awesome lighting system as well, seen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar6btqzzFAs&feature=fvw

Alan Wake's weather system is REALLY good too, but it sadly isn't dynamic. :(

Anyways, I'd have to agree with iguess. I don't know if that's a bad thing that community made mods are superior to the "professional" thing....
