Beth games won't start!

Post » Sun May 09, 2010 10:20 am

My system specs:

AMD Phenome II 2.8ghz 6 Core
ATI 5770 1gb
Corsair 4 gb DDR5
Win 7 Home PE

Well, I've been having problems getting Oblivion started up. The symptoms are as follows:

The game screen starts as usual, but the opening title music doesn't play and when I load a game save, it
freezes forcing me to do a task manager hard shutdown on the program. Now at first I thought it was a faulty
Un/installation of that killer mod "Nehrim" but it's not the case..Due to the fact that Fallout 3 is experiencing
the same symptoms as Oblivion!

The only thing I can think of is that there's been a DRM sys issue involving
a prior game install that I didn't even know about!

If anyone has experienced the same, or has any insight it would be very appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

EDIT

The installation dir is:

"C:\! TZO_VIDEOGAMES\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion"
I had previously installed and ran this game/s on this system for a few months without any issues of
this type.

Windows 7 wasn't released until after TES IV and FO3 and from my understanding there are some compatibility issues. If you poke around I believe there is a fairly simple fix, an INI edit or something along those lines. (I'm not sure if the fix is the same for TES IV and FO3, you should probably check both sections.)

Thanks for the reply! :celebration:

I forgot to mention that I previously installed and ran both games for quite a while before this new set of
mishaps occurred. So it's not the INI edit due to different games with the exact same problem. I don't
believe, then that it's a game-related issue as much as a system/program issue. It does seem odd though
that two differing games are experiencing the exact same issues.

As for hunting around for an answer, it's gonna be pretty hard due to the fact that this is a rare occurrence
because I have never experienced these glitches before with oblivion as I've owned it since 2006 and clocked in an
obscene number of man hours. (2500+ hours & counting) Further, I modded the he** out of it and most glitches prior
was due to the modification of the game's setup/mod..

This is quite different as I've installed a few games that unfortunately has taken advantage of that wretched DRM-stealth
installed anti-PiraWare garbage we've all grown to love! I just don't know which one.. But I could be wrong
on the DRM issue as I'm simply speculating at this point.

-A side note, Beth's games don't utilize the DRM-schemes that I'm referring to.

I'll edit my post accordingly. ;)

When you uninstalled the games, did you delete the install directories, and the directories in My Games? If not, nuke the respective .ini files you will find in there for both games, and see if they start. (not the _default.ini in the actual game directory, the ones in the respective directories in My Games.)

Has your other software loadout changed at all since you played? Something else you might try is, installing the Klite basic codec pack. If you already have it installed, UNinstall it, and reinstall.

Be sure to have it set to repair broken codecs, and ffdshow is set to ignore oblivion/fo3.

Good call, I'll check into that right now!

EDIT:

It's as I feared, a no-go. Just did a clean Un/Install on both games, the same with K-lite. so it must be something
that both the game's program would need that is unique in themselves that an outside prog/process would interrupt
the game's normal function. My next step would be a Virus check on a pre-boot and if that's not the case then I
don't know what it is, save a DRM prog. I do remember installing a "Bing tool-bar" Some of these seemingly
"innocuous programs" love to install little surprises into the registry, or worse yet a DRM prog in windows Kernel.

It hasn't been confirmed, so I wouldn't be alarmed even if that was the case because every program's error always has a
logical solution...It's just a matter of rooting it out.

What's got me stumped, is the fact that even with a clean Un/Installation, reg files/ settings should "right" themselves
along with the reinstall.

Look what I found in my registry!

I'm pretty sure that reg entries aren't usually misspelled!

Yes, you need to look into this. Boot into safe mode, run scans (with more than one virus scanner, malwarebytes is a good choice)

Yes, I did just that used Avira AntiVir premium, and MalwareBytes (Retail vers) and I DID find several
little treasures...

Yet I still have that funky reg entry...I'll have to see if starting a new Admin account will show it. If it
doesn't then I'll have to resort to killing off my previous Admin account..But first I'll try a sys restore before I'll
commit to that, because the Idea of re-installing well over a hundred programs is quite a daunting task indeed!
