pretty much everything from TES is ripped from somwhere.

imperials-------------romans
bretons----------------celts
nords-----------------vikings
khajits-----------------kilrathi, thundercats, my cat chloe
argonians------------lizardmen, sleestak (land of the lost), my friend pet iguana
orcs-------------------pretty much a staple in every fantasy game
elves------------------ditto
imps, goblins the list goes on.

they have alot of original lore and the dwemer (dwarves) are different than other games but there is only so much you can do with fantasy that isnt cliche and overused already. if you go to far off the reseveration then you get silly looking anime games like aion.

It seems folks like to generalize about the people living in the world of Nirn just as much as they do about the people of earth.

They are fictional places and races and cultures based on the imagination. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

But I for one enjoy these 'coincidental' resemblances, as they make the cultures of the races more identifiable, at least for the human/elf characters anyway.

Everything needs inspiration... if you look at pretty much any work of fiction, there are really very few original ideas. Just old ones combined in new ways.

Pretty much this. Some of the races are just based on real-world cultures like the vikings, celtic/french, romans, etc. but it's just an inspiration. If you really look at the lore and the world, the races and cultures are far more different from their inspirations than they are similar.

In that case. We can't have men. They are in the real world.

Personally I think the history makes the game all the better. I'm a history freak and a symbolism nerd and finding stuff I reconize makes me want to look for more! It's just a bit of fun trying ti find all the associations and things. You know how many pop culture references and history subjects were in Oblivion?

I don't see the reasoning behind your complaint at all. Are you complaining because Breton sound similar to Britain? Or is it because you think they are based off of real historical races? In that situation why are the imperials (which are based off romans) okay but not the bretons?

part of the reason they do this is so that you can easily associate and relate to the race you choose to play or interact with. Much easier than reading up on a lot of lore (which is always fun to do though).

You gotta realize nearly all of Fantasy games are all inspired by Folklore/ BC and medieval times come to mind when playing TES as it is a Medieval Era type of game and it's what makes the TES games awesome. For example when you see an elf it
= folklore. Just sheddin some light here :spotted owl:

I must say that there are no indications of the opposite yet, but I still can't make myself playing Bretons for this very reason (even though I like very much how Bretons are designed). Can't distract from Britain. If a game contains clear connections (rip-offs) between in-game nationalities, cults, names, places, cultures, Gods and the real world ones, it just doesn't feel right. I want to be in a fantasy world.

I write it because making the game in Skyrim, may provoke clear rip-offs from the actual Nordic cultures, like Denmark, Sweden or Norway. Some games in the past were also using modified Finnish words, etc. I live in the region myself and wouldn't like seeing real life elements in game. Just in case. Thank you in advance!

Yeah, most fantasy does that, including and especially LOTR.

Here I was thinking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breton are based on the French.

The French?
The least you could do, is read your own link..

As for the OP: well, you are going to be greatly disappointed, as you will be able to make clear associations between in-game characters, places, objects, etc to real-life eras, places, peoples, etc.

I don't really see any connection whatsoever between TES bretons and real world, historical bretons.

I do see mild connections with nords and historical "nordic" type ulture, although more correctly "germanic".

It seems like there is some kind of PC rulebook to call everything that's actually "Germanic" as "Nordic".
