beth still svcks at taverns

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 5:54 am

The taverns in this game are a joke, 1 to 2 people most of the time, they all look the same, I thought it was just oblivion but skyrim has the same terrible taverns. Taverns are the hubs in fantasy games and they are a joke in Skyrim. look at the witcher 2, the first town is very populated, people walking around talking, tavern is full of people talking, music playing, dice/card games being played, . Walk in a tavern in Skyrim and its like a funeral. Its the little things like this that really get to me about bethesda, they dont nail the little things IMO.

Have you tried visiting one during the night hours?

I spend a good bit of time in Whiteruns during the night hours.

Do those NPCs that "fill" the tavern ever leave the tavern?

Guess they figured with the vast amount of other stuff to do... elaborate taverns seemed quaint.

Are you crazy?

The best time to break into people's houses is in the early evening when they are all at the Tavern!

This, taverns during the day seem to be ghost towns but at night they are pretty populated (also not the best time to do a brawl since people get in the way and it turns into a "real" fight and the person you were brawling dies and you get a fine. This happened to me during my first brawl in either whiterun or riverwood (cant remember) and was kinda sad cause the person was that one female warrior. (pretty hot looking :P )

isnt that an oxymoron?

If you want a full blown tavern experience it sounds like you already found your game.

Witcher 2 is the God Emperor of taverns, I've never seen a game get them so right. And I don't even drink! It's almost like some subconscious knowledge or ancestral knowledge about drinking alcohol that tells me it's "right".

Yea man, I don't know what you're talking about. What games have you played with better Taverns? Unless you're the town drunk and you're trying to hang out there at like 10am... they're PACKED at night. I often go there to see who isn't at home *devious*

No, learn to read, the taverns are like funerals......even at night, no atmosphere, lifeless. The Ai is robotic.

Are you serious? How many RPG's you play? The witcher 1 and 2 are infintely better with people talking, music, card and dice games, fist fighting tournaments. people always moving around, waitresses serving drinks. Many games do taverns infitely better.

The biggest appeal to these games is being in a believable world and immersion................... Says the guy posting on a video game forum.

There was a tavern mod made for Morrowind called, "The Broken Drum" it was the most perfect mod I ever played, many interesting scripted events happened there depending on the time of day. :celebration:

Uh-huh. Let me go back to the question unanswered:
Do any of those NPCs that "fill" these taverns ever leave the tavern?

I've seen the taverns in the Witcher and even some similar things in Final Fantasy games. They are static. The npcs are placed, the "talking" you hear is a background soundtrack, and the hustle and bustle is just a scripted set of events that repeat.

TES doesn't do that sort of thing. Everything they create is dynamic, and powered by the npc life schedules. So yes, while the effect is less dramatic, it's also a lot more interesting.

I don't want to play Witcher 2. I just dropped $60 on Skyrim and am having a blast with it. :P

Which taverns? Riverwood? There is noone in the town to begin with, of course the tavern will be empty.

As others have already pointed out. People are busy going about their everyday life to spend 24/7 in the tavern. Go at night, when all the shops are closed and you will see more people in them (Riften tavern comes to mind, there were like 10 people stuffed in that little downstairs area).

The people in the taverns do leave the taverns in TW2...... The door is always being opened and closed with people going in and out...............
