Bethesda and lore

Learn to tell the difference between lore and gameplay. The game and gameplay is nothing more than a model used for the world.

[montypython]"It's only a model"[/montypython]

And... spears traditional are not in... Does that mean we get Pikes, Halberds, Ransuers, Tridents, Pole-axes, Glaives, Guisarms, Glaive-Guisarms, Glaive-Glaive-Guisarms, Glaive-Guisarm-Glaives, Glaive-Glaive-Guisarms, Glaive-Glaive-Guisarm-Glaives... err, what were we talking about again?

And proceedural generation can be awesome, and often can make a more believable world than a hand-crafted one.

Spears and Crossbows and Levitation and [etc] are not gone from the world presented in lore. They are gone from the world as a viable option in your gameplay approximation of the world presented in lore.

This, basically. The lore is the world they are trying to present. The game is the best approximation of that world they are capable of presenting reasonably.

It's Skyrim.

Maybe no one in Skyrim makes spears, like in Cyrodiil. Maybe no one sells Levitation spells because no one who knows it bothered to teach it to anyone else and so it's not in the gameplay aspect. It didn't fall off the face of Nirn, it just isn't used in that specific province.

Easy explanation. Totally acceptable.

Totally absurd and unbelievable. The games aren't Tamriel. In Tamriel there are children and toilets and the world is more than fifty miles across. And there are spears.

I admit I do not get the obsession with spears*. I confess I tried 'em recently in Morrowind, wasn't impressed and went back to long blade and marksman. Now if the clamor were less about a single weapon and more about weapon diversity I could understand it. But long sticks with a point are such a minor detail it's irritating to continually see complants about it.

Maybe if they were a ranged weapon. Otherwise .... meh.

*Other than in purely Freudian context of course.

They got rid of toilet/washroom/restroom, I can't see why they can't do the same with spears and crossbows.

They have to keep in mind the balance, and the plus and con of keeping it. Obviously the con outweights the plus.
