Bethesda and Season Passes; good idea or no?

This is a pretty divisive topic among gamers. I, myself, feel that it's a silly concept in every conceivable way. I'm too tired to rant about it now, I just want to see where everyone in CD stands on the concept.

I don't mind, but I'm not going to pay for something that isn't even planned yet. "We'll make something, we have no idea what and when, but it'll be cool" doesn't sound like a good sales pitch to me.

It absolutely does not sound like a good sales pitch for me.

I'll only purchase expansion packs.

I'm upset Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios jumped on the Season Pass support.

No, lol. First show me the product, then I might decide to buy. Even if I pay more for the dlc's purchased individually, I think it's the most responsible way to spend my money. If they make expansions like Dragonborn and Shivering Isles I will buy them full price, even retail.

Given Bethesda's track record of releasing DLC of a quantity and quality that's generally worth a lot more than $30 collectively, I'm happy to pay that little bit less upfront for it, assuming I enjoy the base game.

As a general concept, it depends on the company. If I don't trust them to deliver that much value, then I wouldn't pay it. If I do, then I will. It's not all that much different from pre-ordering, really.

I think this was a situation where too much transparency just made this whole pitch seem sketchy.

I'm not seeing a problem with this. I presume we will still be able to buy DLC individually (as well as a GOTY edition later on) as we always have? And if so, I don't see why another sales option could be be a bad thing. I'm not a person who likes fewer options. The more options the better, is my attitude.

Depends on the game/company for me. Usually, I don't care. But for Bethesda? Ye'h. I'll probably buy the Fallout 4 season pass. I trust Bethesda myself.

As long as they actually include ALL of the DLC free in the season pass, then I won't complain. It's extremely annoying when you buy a season pass for the game and then find out that the fine print says you only get some of the DLC with it.

Horse armour dlc, not a great track record. It was like 5 bucks Canadian brand new, and added 2 sets of armour for horses in oblivion that really didn't do anything.
In fact most of the dlc for oblivion, besides shivering isles and knights of the nine wasn't worth the money. Like 10 bucks for a hideout.

Though I will say shivering isles was probably their best expansion for any of their games, it was worth it, just not the minor dlcs that were essentially user made house mods.

The early Oblivion DLCs were clearly a business/development experiment that Bethesda have learned from, given that they haven't repeated those early failures. They were among the first to adopt the current DLC trend, nobody really knew what the market would accept back then. The last two DLC for Oblivion, all of Fallout 3 and Skyrim have been substantial additions to the games.

I wouldn't even say Knight of the Nine was worth it at all... That DLC wasn't really much itself. The Mehrunes Razor DLC was worth it though, for long-term characters, due to Oblivion's broken leveled enemies mechanics.

However, that's just one game and honestly, Oblivion is the only game they've done which has pretty bad DLC.

Not Hearthfire. I consider Hearthfire for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim equivalent to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivon's DLC's like the Orrey.

Hearthfire really isn't substantial. It does not add a new landmass or a new realm like Dawnguard and Dragonborn.

Yeah, well, I hope this works better this time. The crowd had yelled "Spears!" since way before Skyrim's launch, then you teased them in the Skyrim game jam video, and then nothing.

Yes, and no. Yes, that it's a good way to buy them all in a bundle, especially if there's stuff like horse armor or Hearthfire  No as in you are paying for content that may have not even been planned yet.

So, i'll buy it, after all of them have been released :hehe:

So... i'm all for it, and especially against it?

True, but Hearthfire is significantly cheaper than Dawnguard and Dragonborn, and does at least add a couple of new minor quests and mechanics that were not in the base game. Perhaps another mis-step on their part but still more content than the previous house mods. Looking at Skyrim as a whole, if there had been a $30 season pass, then those who bought all the DLC on release instead of waiting for the GotY/Legendary edition would have saved quite a bit and, at least in my own opinion, gotten their money's worth.

The way I see it, it's a money-saving option for those people like myself that enjoy the game and trust them enough that we're confident we'd buy the DLC on release anyway.

I thought that was Fallout 3.

Anyway, I never understood the fuss about a season pass. If you know you're going to play the game extensively and trust the company behind it well enough, invest in it. If not, don't.

However, the difference here is the company doing it apparently has no idea what they're going to do for DLC, just have a planned price tag, which I find odd.

If you already know you're going to buy all the DLC, then it's a good deal.

If you don't, then it isn't.

There's also no rush - the few times I've gotten a pass, I've waited until the first DLC was announced/detailed/days from release. (Or, in the case of Bioshock Infinite, after a couple DLC were already out.... I got that pass at the time of Burial At Sea Pt 1's release.)

edit: I though the Passes I got for Borderlands 2 & Bioshock were good deals. On the other hand, I'm glad I dodged a bullet and didn't get the Borderlands:Pre-sequel one. (oh, and re: "if it includes everything".... I'm okay with a pass not including everything, if they're explicit about what is included. I don't mind that Borderlands 2 had more DLC beyond the Pass. Of course, those extra bits weren't that interesting to me anyway )

So you haven't gotten anything (besides, say, Diablo 3:Reaper or Destiny:Taken King) in the last 5+ years? Because there haven't been many expansion packs sold in a long time. Unless you're defining "expansion pack" as something different.

(Bethesda hasn't released one since Shivering Isles, for example.)

Bethesda said they wasn't working on Fallout 4 for years, before announcing it... And after announcing it, then admit that they were working on Fallout 4 since 2009... If they are saying that they have no idea what they're doing for Fallout 4 DLC, then they're keeping secrets most likely.

Seeing as i buy all of bethesda's dlc anyways its a good deal for me. If you don't buy all the dlc for bethesda games...then buying them in bulk (and in advance) isn't a good idea. Eventually mods will probably require the dlc, and i don't have the patience anyways to wait for the goty that will release in...i don't know 2017?

30 dollar season pass for 40 dollars worth of dlc. Basicly a 25% discount. Not terrible and not great either. I'll just wait until the Dlc is 80% off on steam like I did with skyrim.

Pretty much sums up my opinion. Options=good.

I may or may not partake, not sure yet, but I like options!
